This was the last balls to the wall Boeing airliner. It was over engineered to shit with no expense spared. Everything since has been a pretty large downgrade in this sense.
How anyone would ever think of suicide when sitting in one of those seats is beyond me, I am mainly thinking of MHL 370. I just do not understand some people, apart from human relationships, everything in life can be controlled by your effort and work. If you work hard enough you can buy yourself any human pleasure possible: being a captain and getting to fly in such a beautiful environment would be a dream. And with that income I would just buy myself a good house and max out my credit cards buying tech and comfort. I would never be depressed. One man's trash is another man's come up.
Yes, but I am not willing to change who I am because of social pressure. I think people are too unaware of how much we are affected by our ancient survival and reproductive mechanisms: adhere to the group, have a politically correct opinion, seek emotional comfort, expend as little energy as possible, etc.

Wealthy people get depressed and have mental illnesses too. Being rich is better than being poor, but it doesn’t solve the existential problems that come with being a conscious human being. And in any event, airline pilots are not generally “f you money” rich.
Because there's diminishing returns, these people also have too many problems. I am not talking about being a billionaire or a rock star, I am talking about having a very high paying job, think STEM, doctors, pilots, researchers, Uni teachers.
And in any event, airline pilots are not generally “f you money” rich.
Someone like Zaharie definitely did. He was one of the most well versed and experienced captains flying for Malaysian Airlines.
Yeah, it is reductive but it definitely helps to be proud of yourself and have good financial rewards. Now, I said I just couldn't understand captain Zaharie, I didn't mean to say that all depressed people should feel better by earning more.
That's true, I have never experienced depression and I am also very young and lack life experience. But, for example, if someone who was depressed woke up with way better life circumstances, wouldn't their mental state change? It has to be determined by external factors, it can't just there be "something wrong with people"
What you seem to be thinking of as 'depression' is something like feeling terrible after doing poorly on an exam, having a big argument with friends, or failing to achieve a goal. Certainly those are bad feelings, but they pass, and are linked to an event. You might think if it as simply the opposite of feeling great after getting a perfect score or having a fun night out.
Unfortunately depression is a very different thing. It isn’t necessarily logical or linked to an event at all. The brain is an organ, and can have biochemical problems just like you liver or heart or kidneys can. It is indeed something that can just happen to people. Consider all the successful people out there (like the captain of MH370) who appear to have it all, yet still suffer from depression or commit suicide. Many people who seem to have enviable lives face huge struggles with depression. And of course, the opposite is true - plenty of people whose lives are not at all on track never suffer from depression.
you can objectively have more money than most people.
That is not how objectiveness works. The vast majority of the world works hard and have very little to show for it in terms of material wealth. Most of the time it is all about luck of where you were born whether you will have the opportunity or not.
, I just do not understand how he would ever want to end his own life.
Because believe it or not, money alone will almost never buy you real happiness.
That is not how objectiveness works. The vast majority of the world works hard and have very little to show for it in terms of material wealth. Most of the time it is all about luck of where you were born whether you will have the opportunity or not. A lot of incredibly intelligent people around the world never get to do anything with is because of their situation.
The vast majority of the world does not work as hard as you think. They still waste a lot of their time, spend it on social media and entertainment. They do not live, breathe and eat their professional field every single day. If they did, they would have more financial wealth. Let's say most doctors are complacent, you are an immigrant from a 3rd world country but you work so hard that you don't care about anything but learning medicine and English, you practice English to completely get rid of your accent and you learn medicine like a maniac. You don't go out, you don't have fun, you just study and work. Then you go and work in a developed Anglophone country where you instantly stand out, you speak like them, you are better prepared than most people and you can make f you money.
Because believe it or not, money alone will almost never buy you real happiness.
Nobody's always happy but you do buy a good enough life + doing what you love doing, if your work keeps you on your toes every day, how could you ever think of ending that experience?
They still waste a lot of their time, spend it on social media and entertainment. They do not live, breathe and eat their professional field every single day. If they did, they would have more financial wealth.
Go tell a Laotian rice farmer if they just got off their phones and worked harder, they could have all the wordly riches they desire.
Your viewpoint does not work outside wealthier nations. And you even point that one would have to immigrate from a developing nation to be successful. It is wildly unrealistic to think that is obtainable for most of the world.
Your lot in life is largely dictated by where you were born for better or for worse, that is just a reality.
And yes, I believe the vast majority of the world works much harder than me, and I say that as an attorney. I have the luxury of not having to worry about food on my table, access to medicine, stable housing, and a plethora of other things simply because of where I was born.
Your viewpoint does not work outside wealthier nations. And you even point that one would have to immigrate from a developing nation to be successful.
This point is really good. Yes, what I do say only applies to wealthier nations. My world view is limited and selfish and it makes sense. I am a 23 year old who grew up exposed to western media with a lack of life experience.

You may never know. Intellectual work is hard for a reason and not a lot of people can succeed because they do not have the self control, conscientiousness or discipline to learn high value skills. Also hard work isn't always the best. Work smarter not harder.
Give me 6 hours to chop down a three, and I will spend the first 4 sharpening the axe.
Guess Abraham Lincoln knew what he was talking about.
Hmm, but isn't depression the clash between our ancient brains and the modern world? For men, it mostly has to do with sexual frustration. But if you're rich enough, you can always buy yourself sensory pleasures such as comfort and entertainment, travel, have a very diverse life, etc. What is depression about if not the unmet primal needs of survival or reproduction?
There’s a large amount of pilots who see their job as what it is - work. Glorified bus driver work too.
Of course there’s many who do it for the love of it, but it’s not like it’s the cushiest or most prestigious job in the world. It’s not gonna be the thing stopping you from offing yourself if that’s what your mind and life is driving you to do
I initially thought it was for the clearance of the yoke/control column (I don't know if it can reach that distance), but turns out it can also be used for the crotch strap on some seatbelt systems. Not sure about the 777.
Such a shame they're abandoning this lovely cockpit so early with the 777X. Meanwhile Airbus still utilizes their 1980s cockpits on the A320neo and A330neo which I personally prefer over the A350 with how retro the tiny screens look.
Boeing had some epic hi-res pics of the 777 cockpit on their website in the early 2000s. This pic right here is evoking some nostalgia in me; almost as if this was one of those pics that I mentioned.

I actually just don’t understand what point you’re trying to make about aviation here, at all. Or what the 777 cockpit has to do with mental health.

I think depression is impossible to understand by someone who has not experienced it. It sounds like you are lucky enough to be one of these people.
It's nothing like simply being disappointed by failing to achieve a goal, nor will achieving success cure it. It's a completely different phenomenon.
