Are we the last generation to understand what we've lost in Saran Wrap?
Posted by silenttd@reddit | Xennials | View on Reddit | 215 comments
I was wrapping up some leftovers with cheap plastic wrap and can't help but remember how well it used to work. Apparently some chemical in it was terrible for humanity or the Earth, and they changed the formula. Now... now it's barely functional. I think I buy it on hopes and dreams, gaslighting myself into thinking "this is the one that's actually going to cling to shit".
But it doesn't. It's awful. It doesn't cling to anything, except itself, and only then in the most inconvenient way possible.
Do the youth of the world understand just how much better this stuff used to work?
djmagicio@reddit
Glass containers. Just make sure to hand wash the lid. They work great and will last forever.
Dean_Proffitt@reddit
If you can find Stretch-tite it works really well!
questions6486@reddit
I mostly used waxed cloth these days. Or just a container with a lid. They're reusable. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
AlienDelarge@reddit
I tried the wax cloth some and wasn't impressed. The container with a lid or those stretchy silicone covers work well for most things it seems.
birdieponderinglife@reddit
What are the stretchy silicone covers?
AlienDelarge@reddit
Stasher Stretch Lids is one brand that you can find fairly easily and comes in a variety of sizes. Ikea has or at least had a two pack of their own brand as well. You do have to be a little careful stretching them too far but they seem to work well.
sick_of-it-all@reddit
Container with a lid gang checking in. Bonus points if you got some Chinese food or something one time that came in a really thick plastic container and you thought "Hey this looks pretty sturdy. I'm gonna save this."
staypuuuuft@reddit
Look, they don't play around with those soup containers. I have a whole stack.

We’ve officially transitioned from our parents saving cool whip and margarine containers to saving sturdy takeout containers (we do it too).
Kitchen-Fisherman280@reddit

They’re the best! Reusable, can see what’s in there, and if the contents get covered in mold you don’t feel bad tossing it all!

Mine was the Country Crock Butter container

Country Crock sold butter?

For cinnamon toast crunch, dry, after elementary school, alone

Cinnamon Toast Crunch was a rare treat. We always had raisin bran, frosted mini wheats, and life. Oh, yeah, king vitamin.

Mikey! He likes it!
After_Match_5165@reddit
Life is kind of amazing, though, it just sucks when it gets soggy.

A bowl of half Cinnamon Toast Crunch and half Life is my adult favorite! The CTC is just a bit too sweet now unfortunately

Espexer@reddit
Oh, so sad!
Normal-Ad-1903@reddit
lol, tbf it was store brand. Raisin bran is actually still my preferred cereal
Espexer@reddit
I'm never in short supply of Cinnamon Toast Crunch. Not touched raisin bran in, well, I can't remember.
cannadaddydoo@reddit
My wife keeps a box next to her side of the bed as a night time treat lmao. The kids are always so pissed in the morning when they look for it.
UnslakableTemperance@reddit
I save the sour cream and yogurt containers for exactly this. There's also a brand of popcorn I like that comes in a large bag. It's convenient to just scoop some out of the bag and go. Also this supposedly helps with portion control......but not after the fifth or sixth time filling it up, lol.
Sausage_Queen_of_Chi@reddit
These are great for bringing lunch to work or bringing food to parties because you can just toss the container in the recycle bin instead of bringing it home. My mom also holds onto these for me to bring leftovers home when I go to her house for dinner.
I hold onto them to divide and freeze smaller portions of leftover soup or chili.
Cerebral-Knievel-1@reddit

there’s a local pizza place that puts their non pizza dinners in these round plastic takeout containers that are the perfect size and shape for so many things. anytime we start running low on them because they get left at work/lost, we have an excuse to just order more takeout.

Me too. I pack lunches in them too. No big deal if they get forgotten at work or school.
lonely_nipple@reddit
I've got about 8 Hillshire Farms lunch meat plastic containers with lids. They're a good size for putting sandwiches in if you're bringing lunch to work, and they're just about the right size for a serving of leftovers.

I have a whole box full of these plastic containers with lids saved from these tasty pretzel bun cheeseburgers the local grocery store sells. I must have 30 of them by now. I'll never use them all and the collection keeps growing, but I can't throw them away. They're so nice! 😭
PickleFlavordPopcorn@reddit
You can buy a case of those round takeout containers for like $30. I got my husband a case of them for Christmas a couple years ago and we eat smoothies out of them every day and use them for everything!
bassman314@reddit
Yep. I have a ton of deli containers from to go orders.
They are even pre-sized and share the same lids!
Parisian_Nightsuit@reddit
Quart pint and quart containers from restaurants and Grillos pickle containers are both good storage containers in my house. They are perfect for storing leftover soup, sauce, etc. The Grillos containers are good because the lid is a twist top so it’s a little more secure.
FoofaFighters@reddit
I have a stack of these in the cupboard. At least twenty or thirty, the round black ones with clear lids. I get them when we order from one of our local Chinese places (whose food is astronomically delicious).
Kind-Feeling2490@reddit
I bought a variety of them in bulk from Sam’s Club and use them for almost everything. They hold up well in the freezer too. Sadly takeout has resorted to the flimsy clamshell packaging.
HungryFinding7089@reddit
Agree (it's called cling film in the UK)
Poor_Richard@reddit
I've got glass jars: mason jars, former salsa jars, former peanut butter jars, etc. They are all great at storing leftovers, and if you want, you can seal them.

Conscious_Drawer8356@reddit
Well get with the time bro and stop! There’s a “billion” of us who don’t. Better alternatives available than plastic wrap my dude. What a weak comment
bakedveldtland@reddit
Same, I hope against all odds that we are the last generation to have relied upon plastic wrap. Plastic never fully degrades, and with 8 billion people living on this planet, every piece of plastic that we use each day adds up quickly. I haven’t used plastic wrap in at least 15 years. Still working on reducing other single use plastic in my life, it’s not easy I will admit.
nneighbour@reddit
My mother gave me Costco-sized roll of cling wrap when I moved out. I still have most of it left. I’m team containers with lids.

Modern Saran wrap are like modern snack cakes - horrible without the deadly chemicals
Matshelge@reddit

Here's the funny part....so the original box got ripped and so I reached out to the company to see if they could just send me a box (and a box was all I needed, wanted, and was specific for just that)....yeah...they sent me a new box, and a whole other roll...I'll have to add it to the will to have it passed down through the generations.
djsynrgy@reddit

thehousewright@reddit
And it's made in Massachusetts!
Cararacs@reddit
What made it cling to things was found to be crazy carcinogenic and is now banned.

toomuchtv987@reddit
Stretch-Tite brand. It has a sliding cutter, doesn’t wad up, and it actually sticks to things.
sweetassassin@reddit
While I have transitioned to a more sustainable way to store leftovers, I will say that the industrial strength plastic wrap sold to foodservice is still the old formula, or maybe a new formula that has the same grip.
May want to check Costco or restaurant depot
Massive-Resort-8573@reddit
It sticks to itself. You just have to wrap it all the way around so it overlaps.
kzlife76@reddit
Rubber bands are good for holding it on bowls.
housebythesideofroad@reddit
We now use Stretch-Tite. Cheaper and works better than Saran imo.
ScottClam42@reddit
I bought saran wrap recentlynfor the first time in years, but it was only so my kids could easily slide their paper maché creations off their molds. It worked, but now i have a roll of this stuff
12ab34cd56ef78g@reddit
The term "Saran wrap old recipe" typically refers to the original, original Saran Wrap which was made from polyvinylidene chloride (PVDC), known for its strong adhesive qualities. The formula was changed in 2004 due to health and environmental concerns over its disposal, and it is now made of polyethylene (LDPE

The amount of us committed to using disposable non-biodegradable garbage is sad. This thread has been kinda eye opening on how fucked we are as a species. Like we all know we’re wrecking the planet, but MuH Convenience!!
Meanwhile, glass Tupperware exists, works better than any wrap, and lasts decades. But nah. We can’t be bothered to have to clean that. Better generate more plastic trash instead.
Smfh
Swimminginthestorm@reddit
I had no idea that’s why it stopped working. Glad to know I’m not crazy. Been using Tupperware instead.
Disastrous-Panda5530@reddit
Same!!! I switched to glass containers a while back. But I’d get so frustrated with the Saran Wrap and couldnt figure out why it was so awful.
Urlachamalu@reddit
I wondered about this too. That stuff used to stick to everything like velcro.
Stang1776@reddit
Even in the most perfect environment you were still peeling that shit off from itself. Maybe I was doing it wrong but what a pain in the ass.
AlienDelarge@reddit
The boxes with a sliding cuttet worked best. Costco usually carried that type. You could pull out what you need, attach it, then cut it from the roll.
NextPrize5863@reddit
Same thing, I literally had to start buying press and seal. I guess they just wanted us to buy that instead.
That_Skirt7522@reddit
Press and Seal though still works well. I will bet soup on that.
ihavenoidea81@reddit
That’s the only one that works
photogypsy@reddit
I remember when press and seal was first introduced. I thought, “this stuff is great. I can’t fall in love with it; they’ll stop making it in six months, because I love it”.
So happy that 20ish years later I was wrong. I use it for everything, and it’s mostly non-food related stuff
time4meatstick@reddit
Standing on soup, dawg.
Notoriouslyd@reddit
My mom had an industrial roll of saran wrap from the 70s, my grandmother snagged it somewhere, and along the way someone built a stand for it and it became the centerpiece of kitchens overs decades. We uses that friggin roll until sometime in the 2010s. We mourn its loss and talk about it often. RIP to the real ones
MostSharpest@reddit
I live in Japan, the promised land of excess plastic everywhere.
I remember reading on a company here trying to go eco-friendly and using the new formulation, only to be buried by their competitors, when Japanese consumers rejected the "worse" substitute. These people use copious amounts of plastic wrapping for everything (like, candies and cookies are individually wrapped inside the outer plastic packaging), and the saran wrap here today is still the clingy type. "Eco" is generally seen as a meaningless buzz word for companies trying to squeeze higher prices for stuff.
I claim victory in that after years of struggle against my wife's drive for convenience, our kitchen is finally free of all plastic and teflon, including saran wrap.
bakedveldtland@reddit
Cultural differences are so interesting. Thank you for doing your part in reducing your plastic use.
mallanson22@reddit
If we could not turn into boomers and start complaining about everything, that would be great.
Comprehensive-Fee420@reddit
Ditched plastic wrap a few years ago and went back to wax paper and a rubber band.
elonmusktheturd22@reddit
Eh. I just reuse plastic bags
Bread bags, bags from flour tortillas, plastic grocery bags, etc. never throw them out. Put them in a big bag in the pantry and reuse until they need washing (throw out rather than wash)
Careful-Use-4913@reddit
I don’t remember Saran Wrap ever working like it was supposed to.
Muddy_Wafer@reddit
My husband and I are still working our way through the gigantic restaurant supply roll he bought long before we met (been together over a decade)… it works fine but TIL it’s probably poison.
We mostly just use containers anyway, tho. Probably why this damn roll is STILL nowhere near done. It’s been through like 6 moves, in at least 4 states.
RabbitLuvr@reddit
They don’t know what it was like; but it’s ok, they use containers with lids, because those are washable and reusable.
VelocityGrrl39@reddit
And they’re way more conscious about plastic waste.
207Menace@reddit
My grandparents always used margarine containers.
Canesjags4life@reddit

jeophys152@reddit
I basically don’t use the stuff any more. I use it so rarely that I have a box of plastic wrap in my drawer that is at least 17 years old (no exaggeration there)
ringobob@reddit
We always had the cheap stuff, so aside from a few random encounters with actual Saran Wrap when I was a kid, I have been stuck with this experience my entire life.

bluescrew@reddit
Yep this is what i use, and the box/ cutter is so much better
agentmkultra666@reddit
The Costco/Kirkland plastic wrap is just as good. Nice and thick.
I’m also still working on a roll I bought years ago, costco size is magic
MarkyGalore@reddit
The box even makes it easy enough that my parents can do it.
LardLad00@reddit
Yeah the commercial stuff works great and the box is so much handier.
I keep a big commercial plastic wrap and foil above the refrigerator and life is good.
fauxshoyall@reddit
Who's got Saran Wrap money? Old Pyrex with replacement lids for me.
GhostAnthonyBourdain@reddit
Put it in the fridge! It'll work better.
Aednfell@reddit
Aluminum foil every single time. Saran Wrap smells disgusting and makes the food taste like gasoline. Not to mention the self-sticking factor, which just pisses me off and I end up having to redo the whole thing at least once (usually twice).
I just use foil for everything and call it a day. Note: this does drive my wife nuts.
BigSquiby@reddit
get a box of the commercial stuff from costco, it works like the old stuff
nanonoise@reddit
We get our microplastics.PFAS other chemicals from other new improved sources now.

AmyGranite@reddit
Or do they just sell so much in a pack that we're using last decade's formula still?
jdude4182@reddit
I bought the two pack when I was in college in 2012. I’m seriously still using the 2nd box. I’ve had two different roommates who would also use from the same box. It’s not like I’m using it all the time, but often enough that I’m shocked I’m still using the same pack.
Key-Shift5076@reddit
..I was wondering this myself. I accidentally ruined the box the giant roll came in so bought a second box, resolving to use the box once I’ve decimated that roll..
TLDR: I still haven’t gotten halfway through the replacement box roll.

the_matthman@reddit
Since they changed it, the key is to stretch it juuust a bit before wrapping it around the bowl. It takes some practice. IIRC, SC Johnson voluntarily changed it after learning of the original's effects on people's health.
redditreader_aitafan@reddit
The commercial stuff still works pretty well. I get it from Sam's.
Jenaaaaaay@reddit

Spartan04@reddit
Same. It always stuck to itself and getting a clean cut with the built in cutter on the box was such a pain.
For me reusable containers are the way to go for leftovers. Much easier and I just toss them in the dishwasher when I’m done and then I can use them again.
poit57@reddit
After reading the OP, I was wondering if I was just that bad at using Saran Wrap. It's always been a pain for me when I've tried to cover leftovers with it, so I wouldn't view the OP's experience as being due to a change in the formula.
GonnaTry2BeNice@reddit
I’m just glad to hear that it does in fact have some bad chemical because now my instincts feel validated. I stopped using it a long time ago because I could just tell my body didn’t like it. I’m the same with microwaves. I have zero scientific justification for it, my instincts just tell me to avoid it.
Jerkrollatex@reddit
I just buy the professional grade stuff from Sam's or Costco. The problem is when the garbage was burned the plastic wrap gives off a poisonous gas. The garbage where I live isn't burned so I feel it's okay to buy the kind that actually works. I avoid food waste by using the good stuff so I'm making less waste. I also opt for resealable, reusable containers most of the time anyway. I just need plastic wrap for things like freezing compound butters and keeping my avocados from going brown.
JudgeJuryEx78@reddit
I only buy name brand wraps. We haven't lost it, we've just settled for less. Maybe generic used to be better, but I refuse to by generic seran wrap, aluminum foil, sealable bags, etc, these days because they always fail me. I'm full on Ziplock and Reynolds.
GarminTamzarian@reddit
I'm good with generic aluminum foil as long as it's the heavy-duty type. The standard version rips much too easily.
Generic zipper bags suck, though.

DrMcJedi@reddit
It really depends on the container you’re trying to seal. Some of my kids’ bowls work great, but other stuff doesn’t hold at all. Glass/ceramic bowls work fine most of the time and grip like the old days. Press-n-seal has become my more common go to (as lots of others are saying). I also use a ton of Pyrex now vs reused random yogurt/cool whip tubs like my mom always did.

backpackofcats@reddit
Go to your local restaurant supply and buy a box of commercial plastic wrap. Not only does it work way better than regular household plastic wrap, but the box is big enough to probably last a lifetime in home use.
bfume@reddit
Just get Stretch Tite. It’s still the old formula and still rocks.
maggie320@reddit
One of those things I haven’t thought about. You’d roll out what you needed and it would stick to your arm, the static would make your hair stand on end and it had that chemical smell which is probably a known carcinogen.
kaest@reddit
If you keep it in the freezer it works a lot better. No idea why. Don't even remember how I figured that out.
ooooooootreyngers@reddit
I blame it of our lack of wearing wool clothing as much these days...synthetics have taken over which means less static electricity created in the world...hence less cling. It's science people !!

It's still in the commercial grade wrap I think. My mom used to send boxes to the Caribbean for her family, toiletries, clothes for poor folks kids in our village/town. We buy a roll from the shipping company. Definitely not made in the USA.

Reusable containers have replaced Saran wrap for me. If I absolutely have to use Saran wrap, I'll put a rubber band around the edge to seal it because that stuff doesn't cling to anything.
And you say "the last generation" to understand what we've lost, but honestly we were one of only a few generations to experience peak Saran wrap. The vast majority of human history had or will have worse food preservation options than us.

The Costco one works well enough. It sticks to itself so it’s good for wrapping individual banana loafs or muffins.

Glad Press and Seal is the way to go! They even use it at a local hospital to cover IV sites when patients shower!

I find the partially plant based Glad wrap to work better than the normal Glad wrap.

I’ve had the same box of Saran Wrap for like 15 years

Same here, it’s from a grocery store that hasn’t existed since 2015.

Press and Seal really impressed me at an AirBNB.
