Currently playing this on my phone. I love the original so much. It was my first RPG. I have the game memorized. Wanted a challenge this time around so I’m playing BB and all three mages. It was challenging at first and my RM dies a LOT lol. Had to grind the levels early on. What’s your go to party?
Neither-Principle139@reddit
Same! Love the updated play and graphics! Fun and nostalgic!
Neither-Principle139@reddit
This is the best and only answer
Dizzy_Pop@reddit
The beginning of my life-long love of RPGs. This game and Dragon Warrior have had a massive impact on my life. Not so much because of those specific games themselves, but because of where they would lead me.
MobileNomad@reddit
I got Dragon Warrior free with a subscription to Nintendo Power. It was the first game I ever beat. I loved it enough to buy 2 and rent 3 and 4 multiple times. I’m considering getting the PS5 remakes now.
Final Fantasy was one I rented several times. My friend finally bought it and we traded for a bit. 35 years later and I still have it. Final Fantasy II/IV on the SNES cemented my love of the series. I have nearly every mainline game.
CalamityClambake@reddit
I have this on my phone and can play it whenever I want! Nine year old me would have lost her tiny little mind!

I still replay that every few years. What a fantastic game. It’s comforting and brings me back to ~1991 when I played it the most.

I got SMB 3 for Christmas when it was the new hotness. The only game I ever got brand new. Taught my son how to beat it. Still awesome. Seeing it played in the movie trailer for The Wizard(?) blew my mind and I needed that game.
Moofabulousss@reddit
The first and only game I could speedrun. I played the shit out of it.
hamburgler26@reddit
Got SMB3 because of The Wizard as well. For once the blatant child advertising ended up being a good thing because that game is still an absolute blast to play all these years later.
msheehan418@reddit
It’s wonderful. I still have it and still play it and Mario world for SNES. The guy who made those games goes back and forth over which one is his masterpiece. They are both great
hamburgler26@reddit
Definitely those two back to back is peak platforming. I like SMB3 because it is a bit more streamlined and simple, but Super Mario World just took everything good about it and cranked it up to 11.

My buddy and I called the video store every day right when they opened, for about a week to see if Ninja Turtles had arrived yet. We finally got it (and also rented Mega Man 2)... and I remember us thinking about Ninja Turtles, "WTF is this???" Bad game play and hard as hell. We just stuck with jamming on Mega Man 2 until we had to return them.
rarselfaire2023@reddit
It's too frustrating to have to go back so far when the final boss kills you. Then you have to get past the stupid respawning birds part, and if that wasn't enough, the boss is bitchin hard
intocable84@reddit
I actually did manage to beat it once..fuck those birds though especially
rarselfaire2023@reddit
Congrats, I tried many times. Even with using an emulator and saving state right before boss fight. I did beat the first Mega Man once without using the pause cheat. That's probably the hardest one I finished.

The entire Castlevania trilogy on the NES was my JAM. (Yes. Even Simons Quest.) ITS A HORRIBLE NIGHT FOR A CURSE…
CalamityClambake@reddit
On Christmas Eve we were allowed to open one present each.
My older brother was a (slightly self-serving) hero and knew that grandma had gotten me Castlevania 3, so he subtly directed me to that present.
The Nintendo had been moved to my brother's room because we had company staying with us so the den was occupied.
My parents begrudgingly agreed to let all of us kids sleep in my brother's room if we promised to be asleep by midnight and did not go downstairs until we could see the sunrise. They put my brother "in charge" to make sure.
We most certainly were not asleep by midnight, but we did sleep well past sunrise. We must have taken turns playing Castlevania 3 until four in the morning. It's one of my favorite Christmas memories.
As a parent, I recognize the genius parenting at work here. My brother got to feel like he'd pulled off a coup and look cool to his younger siblings. I got the game I really wanted. We all got time spent together bonding over a core memory. And the adults got the kids out of the way and occupied so that they could have an evening together and get some sleep.
Best Christmas ever.

Underrated one: Captain Skyhawk. You fight aliens (who are controlling military grade vehicles, planes, gunships, choppers, etc...) with an F-14. Only nitpick is there's almost no music in the game. Fast paced shoot-em up fun, and not too hard like most NES games were.
Other than one of my favorites was one of the last NES games before Nintendo went completely with releasing SNES games: Kirbys Adventures.
MaxHeadroomba@reddit
Captain Skyhawk was great. The Marble Madness-ish graphics looked good with the pseudo-3D style, and the game itself was pretty fun. I remember picking it up for probably $20 circa 1992, which was dirt cheap for a cartridge game at the time.

VVrayth@reddit
Ahh, Shadowgate is a good one! The MacVenture ports are all very good. There was a Shadowgate PC sequel done in the NES style last year, and the same company just recently released a trailer for Uninvited 2. :D
al_m1101@reddit
Omg no way- I had no idea of this! Thank you, I'm gonna look up how to play it!!
VVrayth@reddit
It's called Beyond Shadowgate, it's available on Steam: https://store.steampowered.com/app/2332240/Beyond_Shadowgate/
LedByReason@reddit
Of these, which are your favorite?
VVrayth@reddit
Well let's see. I think Battle of Olympus is a better version of Zelda 2. Crystalis is just hands-down one of the best RPGs on the platform. Metal Storm is a shooter with a very cool gravity-flipping mechanic that I have never seen done since, it's very unique. Nightshade exists in the same sandbox as the Sierra/LucasArts adventure games of the era but with more action, it's a deeply weird game (and also available on Steam!). And Solomon's Key has, I think, never been equaled to this day, in terms of the sort of cool puzzle game that it is (Mario vs. Donkey Kong comes closest).

I came to mention Super Dodgeball, because I figured everyone had already covered the usual suspects. That game sticks in my head for a few reasons. It was challenging but you could do well if you got the hang of it, I seem to remember cool music (is that true? I'll have to seek it out after this comment), and it had super cool moves and graphics when you made a special throw attack. It was more like a fight game than a sports game, if that makes sense. Super fun, glad you liked it too!
