Are Pantyhose/Nylons Making a Comeback?
Posted by Careful-Use-4913@reddit | Xennials | View on Reddit | 406 comments
I’m 46. I was at a funeral over the weekend and the 2 daughters of the deceased, who live many states apart, and who don’t get along and almost never talk to each other were both wearing hose with their dresses. They are 43 and 41. I was surprised to see them on one, and doubly surprised to see them on the other. Nobody else who attended under the age of 70 was wearing hose. Is there a comeback happening that I was unaware of?
RogueFox76@reddit
There is no way in hell I will ever wear nylons again. They are uncomfortable and always look so bad. But hey, if that’s what you like go for it
nhbot@reddit
I’m also 46, and I have to wear hose for my job when we go to annual meetings/conferences. It’s in our attire dress code. Imagine what it was like when I tried to find slips to wear under my dresses….the 20something girl at the register didn’t know what I was talking about. Lol
Careful-Use-4913@reddit (OP)
I had no idea any corporations still had them in dress code!
SimbaRph@reddit
So, my son is getting married next September and I am wearing a black dress with black lace covering that I can only describe as 1950's style. I have very pale skin and a tattoo of my cat that takes up my entire calf, on the inside. I was planning to wear black nylons to cover up the tattoo because I'm nervous about covering it up with makeup. Will I look like an old lady with the nylons?
Careful-Use-4913@reddit (OP)
Nope! Sheer black hose recently spotted on Taylor Swift, and others here have said in NYC it has never gone out of style. I’m sure you’re safe!
pjv1958@reddit
I don’t even know to buy them
pjv1958@reddit
?
GroundbreakingBird16@reddit
Sadly, and I never thought I would say this, but yes. The ones I buy are more sheerish tights than pantyhose but same difference. Plus, I’m always cold these days
EF_Boudreaux@reddit
If you must.
Blackbird136@reddit
I wear them during the cold months. I freeze if I don’t!! Also they can help you put off shaving your legs for longer.
You guys really go bare legs in the fall and winter? 🥴
Careful-Use-4913@reddit (OP)
I’ll wear tights or leggings if it’s that cold, but I’m never going back to nylons.
Blackbird136@reddit
Heard, comfort wise — but my issue with that is that a lot of them end at the ankle. So then that only works if you’re wearing boots, not heels or flats.
referencefox@reddit
FWIW I live for my ankle tights and bare feet in flats. Luckily it’s mild enough most of the winter here that I can usually pull it off.
ZestycloseAd5918@reddit
So dated…
Blackbird136@reddit
YMMV for sure. On me, that look reads like I’m trying really hard to relive 2006. It definitely would not work at my job, either.
I wish it did because it’s for sure more comfortable than hose!!
Loud-Percentage-3174@reddit
I buy the stirrup leg ones from Torrid. I feel like an acrobat AND they give a smooth unbroken line under any shoes.
NoExam2412@reddit
This is a strange comment to me. Do you consider tights that cover for your feet panythose, then? Because I wear tights under dresses but they're essentially pantyhose but, as you said, thicker. They cover my feet.
Blackbird136@reddit
I haven’t seen footed tights in years. Like, 2008 maybe? Granted I haven’t looked super hard or scoured online because I’m fine with pantyhose, but in stores I only ever see the ones that end at the ankle.
Large-Delay-1123@reddit
I have a teen that wears nothing but dresses, she wears tights, but wears socks under them to keep them clean.
yayoffbalance@reddit
that is gd brilliant. oh my god!
yayoffbalance@reddit
Target. I get my fun tights there sometimes, and they also have varying thickness in footed tights. Usually black, white, and grey. If they are not footed, aren't they essentially leggings?
Legitimate-Produce-1@reddit
Snag tights for me! Lots of fun looks. But classic ones, too.
Blackbird136@reddit
That’s the word I would use, yes!! But pretty sure the packages say “footless tights,” though I sadly can’t remember the last time I went clothing shopping due to rising expenses with a non-rising salary lol.
socoyankee@reddit
They make footed tights
MissManipulatrix@reddit
Boots sells semi-to-opaque black tights with feet. They last a fair while without snagging too.
desertdweller2011@reddit
i think a lot of it is just social conditioning. the same reason some women shave their legs, they were conditioned into thinking it is normal and/or like the way it looks. you could not pay me to wear them ever again… too many memories of being stuffed into lil l’eggs for church and funerals 😂
Omgkimwtf@reddit
Social conditioning or not, I shave my legs regularly because when you have the same coloring as Snow White and a hormone imbalance that makes you hairier than average? Bare legged is not a look I'm strong enough to own.
desertdweller2011@reddit
hehe sometimes i bleach mine in the summer! no judgement or even opinions on anyone’s body hair choices, just saying that we are all socialized into whatever we think looks good/better/“acceptable”. the only time i shaved my legs in the last 15 years was when my sister made me cosplay a specific gender as her maid of honor lol. she made me wear a gold sequin mini dress and the vibe just didn’t match 😂
Omgkimwtf@reddit
Agreed, we should all do what feels most comfortable :) I feel more comfortable with shaved legs and shaved underarms, whereas my sister (who has tanner skin and lighter hair, especially because she goes outside more) is perfectly content to leave everything as is.
Also love that you described wearing a dress as "cosplaying a specific gender" XD XD XD

If you ever get to a place in life where you've got about a thousand dollars to blow on something silly, your coloring makes you a perfect candidate for electrolysis and it truly will last for years.
liftkitten@reddit
Question though: do tights really feel all that different? To me they just feel like thicker nylons
jerseysbestdancers@reddit
I don't have psychological fear of runs in my tights as I do with my nylons
tomboy44@reddit
The horror ! Any carrying around clear nail polish to stop a run and then just living with that shit all day at the office 😂
HangryGhosts_@reddit
That’s why I appreciated the very fashionable torn look of nylons of the early oughts! lol
Loud-Percentage-3174@reddit
My grand mother did that trick of wearing two pair, each with one snagged leg cut off, to frankenstein a complete pair. It looked so uncomfortable, two waistbands plus underpants and a slip and a skirt.
tomboy44@reddit
That’s crazy lol
Loud-Percentage-3174@reddit
Right? But she did say one thing that was interesting, that when the girdle went away, women were still expected to LOOK LIKE they were wearing shapewear. You certainly weren't suddenly allowed to be fat. You just no longer wore the garment that smoothed out the bumps.
The_Dutchess-D@reddit
OMG the new ones NEVER RUN! It's a new technology of the fabric. I get them from Noosh.
getnoosh.com
They come w a 1 year (365 day) guarantee. It's such a game changer to be able to shop in semi opaque and sheer and not feel like you are just creating a future fashion faux-pas and throwing your money down the drain.
I love them.
Bajovane@reddit
Happy Cake Day!
nvmls@reddit
Yeah I consider nylons to be basically disposable. Meanwhile I have nice tights for years.
jerseysbestdancers@reddit
And even then, the way I am? I'm worried I'll snag them during the one time I wear them.
Persis-@reddit
I don’t have to worry about how fragile tights are.
I’m entirely too klutzy to wear nylons. Gives me anxiety.
I just don’t wear dresses in the winter, unless absolutely necessary.
Loud-Percentage-3174@reddit
How would you feel about a pair of form-fitting, opaque black leggings?
Persis-@reddit
Definitely done leggings, too. I’m a preschool teacher who is on the playground twice a day with my class. Dresses are just inconvenient in the snow, lol.
Blackbird136@reddit
To me they are definitely more comfortable in the waist. I carry my weight in my belly and the waistband of hose is way more uncomfortable. It cuts into me and often rolls down.
Though neither one are great, tbh.
ButitsaDryCold@reddit
Control top hose are the reason I wear them. Kinda looks like bare legs but squeezes in the old gunt
Loud-Percentage-3174@reddit
THE GUNT
ohmeursault@reddit
Hell yeah after 2 kids I got one of those too
Loud-Percentage-3174@reddit
Yeah I have a question about things rolling down- does that happen to everyone? Is it just unavoidable? I've been looking at shapewear but it seems like, unless I buy a full bodysuit, anything without straps is going to roll down or at least shift.
Blackbird136@reddit
It happens to me, but I’m thick in the middle. Even when I’m at a lower weight, the fat that I DO have is at my belly.
Loud-Percentage-3174@reddit
I mean if we weren't thick in the middle we wouldn't be wearing the shapewear in the first place.
Blackbird136@reddit
I was talking about pantyhose though, not shapewear. The only shapewear I currently own is basically like a corset. So it doesn’t give me that issue.
Zealousideal_Put5666@reddit
Yes, there is some sort of difference I don't know what it is, tights are more comfy than pantyhose.
Legally_Blonde_258@reddit
They're more durable and feel more comfortable to me.
SimpleVegetable5715@reddit
Yeah I had situations where I was supposed to wear nylons, but always opted for tights. Tights don’t run as easily. Compression tights (see what ballerinas and other dancers wear) are the best. They are durable, not as hot, allow for plenty range of motion, and camouflage any weird discoloration you may have going on with your legs. I like Capezio tights. They smoothed me too before Spanx was a thing.
chamrockblarneystone@reddit
Navy Seals say the best undergarment for warmth are the fleece lined yoga pants.
physicscholar@reddit
Are there any specific recommendations? Asking for myself.
chamrockblarneystone@reddit
No sorry. The guys I was yapping with said finding mens sizes could be the only tricky part.
Sophiapetrillo40s@reddit
They do sell them in natural fibers, I have several cotton and wool
akela9@reddit
For me, tights are made by the same devil who forced too many of us into hose anytime we wanted to wear a skirt when younger. It was actually torturous to me. My ex-hippie folks weren't even super prude-ish or anything, it was simply that it was the done thing. If you wanted to wear a skirt, you also wore nylons, end of. I hand-to-god think hose were very much a contributing factor to me becoming an absolute tomboy.
The first time I wore a skirt out, hose free, it was like a religious experience. I now own WAY more skirts than pants. They're just so damn comfy.
Leggings are awesome. Anything thinner can go back to burn in the hell from whence it came.
Careful-Use-4913@reddit (OP)
Yes - they feel different in all ways stated by other below.
DenvahGothMom@reddit
No but nylons, especially in the suntan shade remind me too much of Hooters waitresses so it’s textured tights or Wolford’s in plain black!
frolicndetour@reddit
Tights keep my legs warmer and last through several wears, whereas panty hose runs the minute I open the package, just about. I have good tights that I've had for years.
CrazyIrina@reddit
I wear sheers most of the time, but love winter blended tights. Cotton, wool, lycra. Toasty warm in any weather unless the wind is going hard, IMO, really makes legs gorgeous, too.
elsie78@reddit
To me tights are worse. Makes me run too warm.
Legally_Blonde_258@reddit
This!!!!
teenytinytexas@reddit
Basically every kind of pantyhose and tights are back in style
_incredigirl_@reddit

teenytinytexas@reddit
Okk but I was just thinking about stirrups recently and I'm ready... they look so good inside boots 😆
Vivid-Individual5968@reddit

Vivid-Individual5968@reddit
LA Gear or Reeboks with the straps! 🤣
MissManipulatrix@reddit
Nice to sleep in loose stirrup pants on cold nights so they don’t ride up!
akela9@reddit
Ok, but here me out. Some of my leggings NEED those straps. It would look so much better if I could get them into my shoes in a way that kept the leg taut. I hated them when I was younger, I'll admit. And I can't believe I'm saying this, either, but I've found myself thinking more than once that I miss them in last few years.
MissManipulatrix@reddit
I go for seamed stockings 🥰
Bajovane@reddit
Same.
nneighbour@reddit
I am far more comfortable wearing pants these days, but wore nylons at times with my uniform in high school. I could never go back to them. Hey we’re awful.
Creatableworld@reddit
I will never wear hose again but I just brought out the tights for the winter last week. Snag tights are comfy, come in fun colors, and last for years.
Blackbird136@reddit
I just feel like colored tights look so young. They remind me of like, being in my elementary school Christmas play, with my red tights lol.
Hose last me for many years. I bought an 8-pack in 2017, and 7 of those pairs are still going! One did meet an untimely death thanks to my cat.
Not_a_werecat@reddit
I'm not a dress person, but if I do wear one and it's chilly out I will go for leggings instead.
Pantyhose have always been a tactile nightmare for me.
I sincerely hope that I'll have to wear them again after being stuffed into them every week as a chold along with dresses that I hate to go to church against my will.
elsie78@reddit
But how would you wear leggings with a dress and heels? It doesn't look right since it ends at the ankles, and they are just too think to look polished IMO.
LevelPerception4@reddit
Boots
Not_a_werecat@reddit
I hate heels even more than pantyhose 🤷🏻♀
Haven't owned a pair in decades.
marshmallowest@reddit
After covid lockdown, never heels 👠 again
Vivid-Individual5968@reddit
No heels and no bra for me since then. I just wear a tank with a shelf bra built in. So much more comfortable. No more shoulder aches and dealing with unruly straps. A good one supports my small C girls just fine.
marshmallowest@reddit
Same, I've saved one underwire convertible bra (can go strapless) for special occasions but otherwise live in knix pullover bras
Not_a_werecat@reddit
100%
marshmallowest@reddit
I do this look too and if it's cold enough for leggings im wearing boots
Blackbird136@reddit
Leggings end at the ankle though. So only works with boots, IMO.
Not_a_werecat@reddit
I only wear boots and sneakers, so not a problem for me
MissManipulatrix@reddit
Heels are a bit out of fashion these days anyway. Boots or trainers is where it’s at!
Not_a_werecat@reddit
I have really big feet, so heels have always been painful and extremely silly-looking on me! 🤣
I do not miss them.
Loud-Percentage-3174@reddit
Not bare legs, no! Leggings!
Moquai82@reddit
Yes, but we do never shave.
MartyMcFlysBrother@reddit
My ink prevents hair growth. Ive seen -56. I don’t wear shorts in winter.
moonbunnychan@reddit
I don't wear anything that would have my bare legs out when it gets cold. Pants all the way.
LeakyAssFire@reddit
Huh... I didn't know they actually provided warmth. They look so light and breezy.
Blackbird136@reddit
I mean, on a super cold day (20s or 30s F), I wouldn’t be wearing a dress or skirt at all. But just on a chilly day, they definitely help!!
They can also mask if it’s been a few days since you shaved your legs lol.
FRESH_TWAAAATS@reddit
i feel like the “didn’t shave” part is really important to you personally 🤣
Blackbird136@reddit
150% lol. Stretch that shit out when it’s cold! 😂
seche314@reddit
I have started only shaving below my knees and only every… whenever it actually starts bothering me lol
Blackbird136@reddit
I don’t even grow hair above my knees anymore. Not sure when that stopped, but it did. It’s also patchy below the knees now.
FletchMom@reddit
I’m only growing hair around my shin bone! Like, not on the bones, and not around my calf! It’s so weird!
seche314@reddit
I still do but it is really fine and light so I quit caring. My arm hair became like this too. Not sure why my lower leg hair is still dark, but now that you mention it, I think it is indeed patchier than when I was younger
FRESH_TWAAAATS@reddit

iridescentnightshade@reddit
Nope, that's a thing.
FRESH_TWAAAATS@reddit
not judging, she just said it in consecutive comments 9 mins apart lol
Grand-Try-3772@reddit

krissym99@reddit
Oh yeah, pantyhose does not hide my leg hair! Perimenopause has made my legs way less hairy though, but I'm still not going back to hose.
Sandkat@reddit
I've got a long and heavy wool skirt and some 100 denier tights I love wearing on those sub freezing days. It's super warm!
Katerade44@reddit
They provide a small amount of insulation, but very little. High denier tights or fleece lined tights are great options for cold weather. If it is extremely cold, wear pants with thermals underneath.
NeverMakeNoMind@reddit
There are actual thermal tights now that make it look like you are wearing thin hose for winter months. The illusion of suffering.
MissManipulatrix@reddit
Gorgeous on slim shapely legs or else I find they look bulky from the lining.
aliciadina@reddit
I love these things. It’s opened up shorter skirts in the winter for me
NeverMakeNoMind@reddit
I've been curious about them but wonder how much they would make my legs look like they are made out of polymer clay.
aliciadina@reddit
The black ones are better than nude ones imo for defining.
CrazyIrina@reddit
Light and medium support nylons are pretty toasty. They have thicker yarns and tighter knits than regular pantyhose. Full support just more so.
I'm a daily wearer of pantyhose and wear sheers to 0F or so IF the wind isn't going. I wear home made tap pants or slips under skirts and socks, so not all that cold.
Deep freeze cold snaps and winds? Gotta break out the winter tights for those days.
mattchewy43@reddit
When I ran cross country, in high school, some guys would wear them during races when it was really cold.
Key-Permission-8461@reddit
I wear opaque tights with dresses in the winter too. Just not flesh colored ones. Don’t even need to shave or get my toes done with those.

It’s crazy how experiences vary lol I always found nylons to provide absolutely zero warmth and to actually accentuate any stubble I had 😅
pepper471@reddit
Funerals are the one time you should wear pantyhose
allaboutaphie@reddit
They wont in my wardrobe. But some are talking tights which are different and I will wear depending on outfit and weather.
BittenBeads@reddit
I've never stopped wearing them. First, because my thighs touch. It's the only way to survive a skirt. Second, patterned hose are an excellent accessory. I love them.
Honestly though? There has never been a year where I haven't seen them on gals' legs when the weather is sub 80. But it may be because I notice them. Like when a friend gets a new car and you see that car everywhere all of a sudden maybe?
Careful-Use-4913@reddit (OP)
When I first ditched them in the 90s I switched to biker shorts under skirts to avoid the chafing. But after a while biker shorts got harder to find.
BittenBeads@reddit
We're coming from two very different mentalities. I would never "ditch" a clothing article that is comfortable, keeps my jiggly bits firm, and keeps my thigh skin intact for a clothing article that causes swamp butt. It was never even a consideration.
Careful-Use-4913@reddit (OP)
I never found pantyhose comfortable, and I never found biker shorts uncomfortable. While pantyhose led to plenty of damp crotch, cotton blend biker shorts never did for me.
BittenBeads@reddit
Not just different mentalities, but different access it seems. Where I'm from, biker shorts in the 1990s were made from spandex, not a cotton blend. Tennis bloomers might be a blend, but they would have been useless for preventing thigh chafing since they end mid-thigh at best. A good pair of pantyhose has a cotton gusset and is as comfortable as a pair of modern yoga pants. You probably didn't have access to quality hose if your crotch got sweaty.
ComprehensiveTart689@reddit
I wear biker shorts underwear all the time. I love these ones: https://a.co/d/goxqwv8 and if you need something longer these are great (they come over your tummy but aren’t really shape wear in that there’s no hard panel https://www.target.com/p/jockey-generation-8482-women-39-s-wicking-slipshort-black-xl/-/A-51444697

Oh GOD I hope not.
I still remember when I first started my career back in 2000 and they were required (even for the IT department). I also had a brand new kitten at home who loved to greet me by climbing up my legs the second I walked in the door.
After a week of shredded hose, my neighbors started getting used to me taking my pantyhose off in the hallway before I unlocked my apartment door.
Careful-Use-4913@reddit (OP)
🤣😆🤣 But…why not in the car?
mdsnbelle@reddit
My car was too small and the guy down the hall was too hot.

Dickrubin14094@reddit
Shredded Hose sounds like a band name lol
nvmls@reddit
Yeah I found it very liberating when women at my office just decided to not wear them anymore. Everyone still looked fine and everyone was also a lot more comfortable (and didn't have to constantly replace them.) I think it's fine if you like it or want to wear fun ones for a special occasion, but I really do not want society dictating that I look unprofessional or sloppy without them.
mauibetty@reddit
Where they fake out ones. I have a pair of fleece lined legging that look like shear hose on skin!

Black nylons with black skirt or dress...with nice shoes Never went out of style. You could do that with alot of different colors .. Sexy classic
Serious-Maximum-1049@reddit
I just wore a pair to a police graduation/awards ceremony! I'm 51 & I just didn't feel confident enough in my dress to have bare legs. 🤷🏼♀️ I'm very fair-skinned though, so I found a few pairs online that are specifically for my skin tone (everything else looks ridiculously orange/dark on me, even the ones that are the lightest shade of most brands).
They were so thin & light, you had to look closely to even tell I had them on. It just gave my legs a more "even" look.
Now that winter is near, I'm going to be wearing a lot of fleece-lined opaque tights with tunics, dresses, etc. & I may even wear some black hose for my bf's work Xmas party... but I've also never been one to care much for what society deems to be "in style"! 😅 I've never completely dropped the punk/goth look & I just can't feel like myself any other way! 😁
OwnLobster1701@reddit
I wear tights when its cold but I'm not doing the nylon thing
RoseScentedGlasses@reddit
Some of us are getting varicose veins and blood clots, and need to wear compression. Compression needs to go past the ankles and up to the thighs, like hose instead of leggings or socks, to work really well (doctors orders. ugh). I've had to change my entire work style to accommodate. So I say bring back the hose so I don't stand out alone!
CrazyIrina@reddit
I wear light/medium support for the massage of achy legs. Nice side benefits, too. When I was younger and worked long hours, I'd swap into full supports. They weren't all that comfortable, but they kept me going. European brands are both comfortable and pretty. My old ones looked like I sprayed Rustoleum on my legs.
Loud-Percentage-3174@reddit
I literally JUST bought a pair of 50 Denier pantyhose! I've been a leggings girl for years but I thought it might be nice to have a skin-colored option.
swangeese@reddit
As God as my witness, I will never wear pantyhose again. There was much rejoicing when it went out of style. Tights are fine because they aren’t the nightmare to wear like hose. Tights are also comfortable.
FoppyRETURNS@reddit
I wish but the answer is no.
plangal@reddit
All I can say is not for me. And honestly, I love the IDEA of them because I have scars from frigging mosquito bites all over my legs. But the reality is a hard no. I’ll wear tights. But that’s the limit. And non-control top. I do t like feeling like a sausage.
Comfortable-Salt-710@reddit
I do think theybare making a comeback for sure!
Side note- i've got a few pair of nylons that are basically indestructible. They were not inexpensive, but cheaper then replacing for sure!
_TheHalf-BloodPrince@reddit
I can only hope so.
Jenikovista@reddit
It would be a good thing if they are. From what we know about compression today they likely did a lot of good for millions of women in their menopause years.
LadyCatzrule@reddit
I don't care, comeback or not. I will never wear pantyhose again. Just, ugh, everything about them. The runners if you breathe wrong. The crotch sweat, the toe sweat and binding sensation. The itch associated with eczema. The irritatingness of finding only weird colors in your size. The butt crack sweat. Hard no on pantyhose.
Careful-Use-4913@reddit (OP)
Word.
MoulanRougeFae@reddit
I've seen a trend starting of hosiery, tights, and even slips. I think women are realizing it wasn't just modesty but also warmth from the hose, the way slips protect fabrics from body oils, sweat, and body products, and the way slips and hose can help an outfit lay well. Plus there's something kinda fun about vintage slips. They are quite comfy too for lounging about the house. I have a collection of vintage slips, and regularly wear hosiery.
textilefaery@reddit
Many skirts these days are also unlined and they just don’t lay well without another layer. I find myself struggling to find simple slips in the right lengths, especially since I’m petite
KittenPurrs@reddit
My partner was mystified the first time he saw me (currently mid-40s) getting ready for an event. A slip so the dress hangs well and doesn't bunch weirdly anywhere. Thigh-high nude stockings (because my legs aren't perfect and it's also nice to have an extra layer in a chilly room) with a garter belt (so I'm not tugging at the stockings throughout the night) with the panties over top the belt straps (so I can use the restroom without a fight). "You're so...fancy!" Nope. I'm super practical, so if I'm wearing a nice dress instead of jeans or hiking pants, this is my battle plan to make it all manageable and most comfortable for me.
I'm glad young women are taking another swing at this. It all works well, if they want to play with the elements to find what actually suits them. And after my partner's comment 15 years ago, I've realized I kinda enjoy the pomp and ritual of my "fancy" layers.
MoulanRougeFae@reddit
I enjoy the ritual of it all too. And the way it makes everything lay just so. Hell a decent slip and hose can even elevate a cheap dress a smidge. My husband definitely likes seeing me put all of it on and loves the results. Occasionally we are a little late getting where were were going 😉. It is nice seeing the younger crowd get these items back into fashion and use. Especially since the ones I see are leaning into quality pieces, not fast fashion ones so they won't be going through the itchy, scratchy slips of yesteryear we all suffered through as kids lol
Kitty_Kat_Attacks@reddit
Control top pantyhose and spanx makes me look absolutely KILLER in a pencil skirt. Without it, everything is lumpy. Definitely kills the look… proper undergarments are soooo important!
I’m also a fan of wearing hose underneath my pants during the winter. Having that layer so close to the skin helps to keep me warmer.
KittenPurrs@reddit
When I was in elementary school, I had an itchy half-slip skirt and camisole top. I literally do not understand how they made those pieces so awful. "It's a base layer! But made of fiberglass and asbestos!" As if the 80s had never heard of polyblend fabrics.
I tend towards natural fibers, but I have some man-made pieces that work just fine.
Careful-Use-4913@reddit (OP)
I’m good with slips! Some skirts need them - some are too sheer, and some to prevent cling.
__ohno_notagain__@reddit
Yes slips are so helpful! I remember being frustrated when years ago slips became harder to find.

They might not have been hose, I wear garters and stockings for certain occasions like weddings and such. They are way more comfortable than hose.

Wait? We stopped wearing tights and nylons with skirts and dresses? When?
Careful-Use-4913@reddit (OP)
Dude. In the 90’s. We shucked them and never looked back (unless you call this a look back). 😆
floppedtart@reddit
Hm. Must be a personal style choice then. Cuz I remember wearing ripped jean shorts or short dresses with opaque, tights, or layers with fishnets, patterned tights and such in the 90’s. I still buy tights to wear with dresses in the winter and autumn seasons. Of course I’m not going to wear tights in warm weather though, that would be daft.
Careful-Use-4913@reddit (OP)
Tights never went out. Sheer nude nylon pantyhose did.
Sufficient_Turn_9209@reddit
Tights were fine. I don't think what you're describing ever went out of style as an accent with the right fit, but utitlitarian sheer pantyhose went out in the late 90s. I remember my mom fussing at me for having bare legs in church on Sundays. "It just looks so unfinished!" 😆 I had no idea they were coming back, and after reading all the confusing replies, I'm still wondering if everyone is talking about the same thing. Honestly, I'm totally down with bringing them back! I now kind of think my mom was right. Pantyhose makes a dress look so polished and chic.
Rhianna83@reddit
I went back to school this year and there are quite a few ladies that have brought it back. As someone who was made to wear them in the corp world - to the point that I’d have to rush into a 7-11 sometimes and get the .99 cent panty hose socks — I refuse.

I once matched with a guy online dating who had a massive fetish for pantyhose. We are not talking just for women wearing pantyhose or wearing pantyhose himself, his thing was for both partners to be wearing full bodysuits made of pantyhose. He actually told me about it right off the bat because it was a huge deal breaker for him if a potential partner was not into it, which I wasn't so we politely wished each other well and moved on. I would have been too busy laughing like your wife
Throwaway_inSC_79@reddit
We may joke, but when I worked the ramp for an airline, I had a couple of pairs of woman’s thermal tights to wear under my pants. Still had to wear the standard uniform. But those fit better under those pants than any type made for men.

fashion-conscious millennial here, tights are back in a big way in general & i live in a cold climate and have recently picked up some hose to wear with pleated skirts and leg warmers to work. it’s a cozy, chic alternative to just leggings which have always been boring imo. the tights resurgence is related to the gen Z/alpha nostalgia for the 00s.
Sufficient_Turn_9209@reddit
Wait. You're saying which are getting more popular now? Tights, or hose? Tights, I think, have been back, but now pantyhose are coming back?

I’ve seen them a bunch on trendsetter type ladies, but only the sheer black ones so far. I’m curious to see if the nude ones will ever make a comeback as well
CrazyIrina@reddit
Jet black ones are pretty, but don't spin my propeller. Friend at work always wore nude pantyhose and amazing skirts and shoes.
We sat next to each other working on a project and she'd rub her legs and snap her nylons. Even her ankles were sexy. Pretty distracting NGL. I was too much of a square to know what was going on, heh.
Burlington-bloke@reddit
I hope they're making a comeback, no one has any style anymore. Bring back full slips and skirts too! And gloves, and lovely shoes with a small Louis heel. Not enough women wear underpinnings. Men add even worse!

CrazyIrina@reddit
Yeah! I remember the first time my mom took me to the big department store. Floor 4 IIRC was Women's Lingerie. A WHOLE FLOOR FOR UNDERTHINGS. And they also had a junior's section with cotton clothes and comfy PJ's. They for sure knew their market. I was drawn to that section like a magnet.
I wasn't much into hosiery at the time, but they had several long aisles with anything a girl could want. Tights, sheers, stockings, all the shades and styles, too. Endless displays of nice socks. Lots of garter belts. I asked mom why stockings didn't have tops and she told me to mind my own business, hehe.
My first actual lingerie was a baby blue cotton cami. I still have it!

I’ve been shopping lately for tights and hoses to wear with dresses and skirts because I think they make my legs look better
The_Dutchess-D@reddit
The Noosh brand of sheer; semi-opaque; and opaque hose/tights have changed my life this past year.
I used to get tights from spanks, but I was really frustrated with them always making a roll over the top of the pantyhose waist no matter how much weight I lost.
Noosh is made of that material that doesn't run and they have a one year (365 day) guarantee. I absolutely prefer the design of their waistband over spanks, for me personally. I feel like you can no longer see the line where my hose/tights start underneath the waist of my dress.
I also appreciate that their colors don't only come in heavy opaque. You can get them in sheer and semi sheer for Navy, green, Berry, and there are many shades of brown.
getnoosh.com
They also have some sexy fun patterns. I ordered a pair of those for holiday time, but I haven't received them or worn them yet.
But I wore the sheer and semi opaque black ones ALL over Europe for weeks last month and I never once got a run in any of them! And they looked and fit great the whole time.
When it gets really really cold in Winter, I wear the tights that are flesh toned fleece with a layer of sheer black over them so it looks like you're wearing sheer black hose, but really it's like having thin fleece pants underneath your dress/skirt. Super warm and snuggly. A game changer if you walk outside in the winter when you are dressed up.
magsli@reddit
We wear sheer black hose in NYC. They never left or went out of style. How can you not wear them when it’s cold?
Church_of_Cheri@reddit

Some of them supposedly have a built in "panty" (that white oval) but it seems kind of gross to me. Like I'll just deal with a panty line, if you are looking so closely at my ass to notice it that is a you problem in my book.

In my opinion, pantyhose and stockings are quintessential feminine fashion. They are considered to be both professional and conservative. Considering that formal wear is expected to be worn at a funeral, it is not unexpected that morning daughters would both wear pantyhose.

Is this a US/UK language thing?
Afaik,
Hosiery includes
Tights - two legs together in a form similar to trousers or leggings, but skin tight with feet
Stockings - single leg to thigh with foot, either holdups with an adhesive band, or kept up with suspender belt or garters
Overknee socks - single leg with foot usually elasticated to stay up unaided
Socks. Foot and ankle possible to knee. May be held up with sock garters by the more traditional. (Popsocks are made of sheer tight/stocking like material )
All of which come in many materials and thicknesses, from sheer to opaque and beyond to knitted or fleece. With varying styles eg retro seamed nylons to jersey fleece tights
to me Hose means the normally sewn from cloth single leg garment worn in medieval times, often with a codpiece.
Careful-Use-4913@reddit (OP)
Yes - language issue, sorry. You are correct about all of that being technically hosiery.
Over here tights are as you say, but so are pantyhose, with tights being more durable, and more opaque, while pantyhose are more like stockings - sheer, and fragile, though still one piece with 2 legs and feet.
Merkela22@reddit
Yes it's a language thing. Though the things you listed fall under "hosiery" in the US, "hose" specifically refers to pantyhose. They're most similar to tights but made of nylon and quite sheer, whereas tights lean opaque.
Niklv17@reddit
I stopped for wearing pantyhose for probably about a decade and this past weekend I wore them for an event. I thought it was because I recently took a trip to London & Paris and have been in that classic mindset, but seeing that picture of Sabrina & Taylor has me thinking it’s becoming popular again and got in my subconscious without me even realizing 😂

iputmytrustinyou@reddit
Fuck no. Nope. No, no, not even a little bit. I will burn this whole place down to the ground to prevent ever being required to wear those things again. Afterwards, I will stab the assholes who decided pantyhose and underwire were peak fashion choices.
Just why? Is the goal to be as uncomfortable as possible?
I cannot express strongly enough how gross it feels to be sweating in non-breathable sheer material. And NONE of those are made from material that doesn’t pool sweat in places I prefer to not sweat.
And to add insult to injury, no one can never even get them on without snagging them unless your hands and cuticles are perfectly soft.
I work in an office handing papers, boxes, folders, ect most of the day. My hands and cuticles are never perfectly soft. And ironically, my job is one that traditionally the patriarchy would have a dress code of in nylons and high heels…if it was 1950.
In case I have to say it, I am mostly joking. But after a lifetime of church, parochial schools and grandmothers insisting I wear dresses to “X” event that I don’t want to wear, or even attend - I MIGHT be a little salty about the idea of any sort return.
Careful-Use-4913@reddit (OP)
You win my internet vote for the day! 💜
Merkela22@reddit
Best answer! Hose snag if you look at them funny and they have to be hiked up to your bra so they don't roll down. They somehow do nothing for warmth while making you incredibly sweaty, because its just wrapping plastic around your legs.

Tights are definitely back. Hose, I'm not sure but when it is cold you see them come out. I went to a winter wedding a few years back and went to TJMaxx to get a pair. No lie, two other women were also buying them at TJ Maxx and this would have been before any possible comeback.

I’m in eastern PA. I have a pair of tights I wear under a long sweater dress when I wear it with my black tall boots because the 2 inch flash of skin that the slit reveals between the top of my boots and the start of the dress is weird otherwise.
That is the only time you will find hosiery on my body. If the attire needs to be a leg-baring dress then I will get my spray tan and pedi and if it’s the middle of winter I will also pull out my dressy long wool coat but no way in hell will I wear hose. (When it’s PA winter, a layer of fabric half a millimeter thick on my legs is doing absolutely nothing for warmth anyway).
actualelainebenes@reddit
I remember going to a party about 6 years ago, trying to wear a pair of nude ones with my dress and being told by the youngins at the pre-party that they’re for old people. I was 39 and it was October in NY so it was chilly 😆 I ended up wearing them to walk across the street to the venue because it’s cold, then taking them off in the bathroom once we got there. Yes. And modern brands like Oroblu, Elly, and Me Moi put out some amazing products. My Oroblu and Elly ones are pretty fantastic to wear, bordering on decadent.

Yes, dark, patterned and colored pantyhose, have absolutely made a comeback, but not nude. They provide a little warmth and some added character to the outfit. Opaque tights are more dated now, the sheer is more fashionable, although plenty of people still wear tights. And as others have said, they make tights that are lined with a skin colored fleece that are really warm but give the illusion of wearing sheer black pantyhose.

I'm mid 40s and bought a pair two weeks ago for my mom's wake and funeral. It was chilly and I was wearing dresses that ended a little above knee and heels. I didn't want to have to think of much besides getting through the days. It kept me warm, I didn't need to worry about bending over or doing anything that needed to be done. Leggings would have been tacky with my dresses. It didn't cross my mind to have bare legs though I wear dresses all the time in better weather without tights.
chypie2@reddit
I like em!
CrazyIrina@reddit
Kind of interesting, but there's a company that specializes in sex/sexy time pantyhose. Cecelia de Rafael. My spelling might not be there, but I have some. They are very clearly for the fetishist, but I don't mind. The last guy I wore them for could have put down 1048 miles of railroad track in 1.3 minutes with his erection.
Hehe.
Also, I am a pervert for them anyway. I love to share!
I used to shoplift them when I was poor. Now, I spend $500/mo average on them but do realize I might have an addiction problem.
Oh no! Poor me.
:(
addicted-to-spuds@reddit
I always wear a pair when I’m in a dress, or skirt. My legs are too pale not to.
seriouslynope@reddit
Thigh highs at the most
dunnkw@reddit
Yeah I mean the economy is so bad that you’re going to be seeing a lot of people wearing them into banks.
kitsplut@reddit
not finna judge others, but bare legs with a business dress suit just look weird to me.
knowledgeispowrr@reddit
I’m 43, and I can’t remember the last time I wore actual hose. I have brown, black and navy tights that I wear in the winter when it suits. I’m also in Texas, so I definitely go bare legs for more months than I don’t. Also don’t wear slips, which I consider to be in the same category as pantyhose.
a_solid_6@reddit
I miss slips. Most things that require slips are just lined now. But after a long day, I always felt kinda pretty when I took off my dress and just wore a slip around the house for a little while.
NeverMakeNoMind@reddit
I miss when slips were acceptable as actual clothing. (Layered over things of course) Some of these vintage slips are prettier than dresses. Fairy chic.
knowledgeispowrr@reddit
Oh yes. The subject of an epic teenage fight with my mom was slip as skirt! I own a couple of satin skirts now that fit the vibe
NeverMakeNoMind@reddit
I remember helping my friend pick out a pretty silk and lace slip top at a store that she wanted to wear to school. I thought she was going to wear it over a T-shirt or sheer nylon top or something, like the fashion at the time so I told her I thought it was cool and could wear it to school. Instead she wore it just as a tank top with nothing underneath and got sent home, then blamed me because I supposedly told her to do it. She's a trad wife now.

That plot twist 👌
CrazyIrina@reddit
Jet blacks are pretty in. This includes sheers and opaques. Other shades like beige, suntan, coffee, off black are still pretty out.
Also depends very much on where you live. I live in an NFL town and the only woman in skirts and pantyhose I see is when I look in the mirror.
I'm really big into hosiery of all types in general, especially sheers in nudes, beiges, suntans, coffees, taupes, off black,s and to a lesser extent, jets.
I'll know when pantyhose are back when women start wearing whites and ivories along with off blacks and jets.
I mentioned in another thread they've never been out for me, but then again I have no fashion sense. I've been wearing pantyhose for 33 years and hate NOT wearing them.
I own 3300 new pairs and still have a nervous tick that I don't own enough.
But then again I am the rare woman who has the full spectrum love of them.
SimpleVegetable5715@reddit
I think they have a place when we’re wearing dresses. My legs definitely don’t look like they did in my teens and 20’s. I have spider veins and uneven patches. I also have dark hair while my skin is fair. Even just shaving and exfoliating them would not make them look good in a skirt or dress that fell around my knees. I have always thought tights were cute with certain outfits. I wore compression tights (like what dancers wear) to my sister’s wedding, because I knew I’d be standing for a long time. Getting stuff like spray on makeup for your legs doesn’t make sense to me when hose and tights exist.
hobsrulz@reddit
They make better hose these days. They don't get destroyed. I still find them uncomfortable though
pmgrn8@reddit
On the basis of nothing other than totally guessing, I noticed a lot of entertainers like Taylor swift and Sabrina carpenter wearing them at concerts, so it wouldn’t surprise me if they have become trendy from that.
shagbark_dryad@reddit
Even I don't want to look at my pasty lumpy legs 😂 It looks weird when I'm wearing a dress and my legs are 3 shades whiter than the rest of me. I'm always in pants working and hiking so they rarely see the sun. Also, around the same age as the women mentioned in OP's post and the cellulite has arrived. Hose or tights it is!
Kennikend@reddit
There are some that are super thin and not control top BS that I actually like
Ethel_Marie@reddit
Panty hose rip if I look at them. I won't ever wear them unless I'm somehow forced 😂
forgettingroses@reddit
I pretty much never wear them, but I do have them. Mine are mostly of slutty or sparkly varieties. No traditional brown. I’m 41.
Optimal_Delay573@reddit
I wear sheer pantyhose under shorter dresses during the winter. They smooth out my old lady legs and look a little fancy.
colly_mack@reddit
Tights yes. Flesh colored pantyhose no. I took the last pair of those off in the bathroom in the middle of a wedding in 2003 and have not looked back since!
Frequent_Alfalfa_347@reddit
In 2002 i had my first interview for a “real” job- after college.
It was 95 degrees outside.
I realized i didn’t have nylons and rushed to CVS on my way to the interview to get a pair.
An hour of that interview was outside, walking between buildings.
I’m pretty sure that’s the last pair of nylons i ever bought. I’m done.
Ok_Run6015@reddit
I like them to hold my perimenopause tummy in a bit, but only if it’s an “occasion” that I dress up for
Chingona_en_cali@reddit
I’m a big fan of fleece lined tights for the colder months. Some are quite comfy and they allow me to keep rocking my dresses and skirts at work year round.
Swimminginthestorm@reddit
I’m 41 and wear pantyhose with a dress unless the situation is pretty casual.
Omgkimwtf@reddit
No idea if there's a comeback, but if I'm wearing hose, it's probably in the winter. And black, Or brightly colored.
If I'm wearing skin-tone hosiery, it has a false seam up the back for the vintage look. That's it. The rest of the time, I'm wearing sheer black tights, opaque tights (of any color except white or skin tone), or fleece lined tights.
jayne-eerie@reddit
God I hope not. They may have just felt it was appropriate for a funeral.
cottoncandymandy@reddit
I hope not but even of they are- you'll never catch me in those torture yeast infection traps ever again. 🤷♀️
L0sing_Faith@reddit
I wear thigh-highs (also called "stay-ups"), Wolford brand. I wear them for many reasons. #1) I'm quite fair-skinned, and the nylons give my skin some color so that I don't look like a pale ghost. #2) They make my dress shoes stay clean; I have worn the same pair for 10 years and they are still fresh. When I see people wear dress shoes without nylons, I have to wonder how bad the shoes must stink. #3) It makes my dress shoes more comfortable / prevents blisters or hot spots. #4) The ones with lace at the top are really cute. #5) Helps me stay a bit warmer in the winter.
Slight-Agent83483@reddit
Man I hope so
Cisru711@reddit
I don't think my wife has ever stopped wearing them for more formal somber things like funerals.
Dad3mass@reddit
Dear god, I hope not. They were such a sensory nightmare for me growing up and I would literally rather freeze to death than wear anything that tight and/or nylon-y feeling ever again. Ugh. Literal fingernails on a chalkboard feeling just thinking about wearing them, gives me the shudders. Just give me some leggings and we are good.
frooootloops@reddit
Absolutely the F not. I’ll go the self-tanner route if I must, but over my dead body will I wear nylons or tights. Also- I’m in Florida, where generally it’s warmer (except for this damn cold front today!) so I don’t need them for warmth.
R0botDreamz@reddit
I dont know why they seemed to be everywhere when I was younger. Women wearing them, seeing them in a parking lot, people talking about the... whole section at the grocery store had them.
Then they just disappeared.
smuness@reddit
If they are, I can’t say I particularly care. 🤷🏻♀️
ConcreteKeys@reddit
I never stopped
mkm416@reddit
For me it comes down to color. Sheer black, red, glittery, or patterned hose is a statement, and I’ll wear those out, but I don’t think I could do the tan 80s office wear stuff.
That being said, I reserve the right to completely backtrack on this statement if fashions change. Nude fishnets seem intriguing…
elsie78@reddit
I wear them for funerals and sometimes weddings. They're just old enough to likely have been raised in the era where they were worn regularly especially for special or more formal occasions so maybe that's why?
I haven't heard of them making a comeback.
lsp2005@reddit
I wear them in the winter. In the summer I wear the spanx shorts.
lizeee@reddit
I’m 45 and I’ve never stopped wearing nylons/hose. I have a drawerful in every color. “Snag” tights is pretty good and “We Love Colors” makes some really cool ones! I don’t want to stop wearing my shorter dresses/skirts in the winter and I don’t want to just wear black leggings underneath.
AdComprehensive7939@reddit
I will wear knit tights but nylon hose died in the 90s for me. RiP
liftkitten@reddit
I wear them. In terms of comfort they feel the same as tights imo and they hide how pale and splotchy I get when it’s chilly
caffeinated-chaos@reddit
They never left in the Netherlands. I wear them when it's a rainy day and too cold for bare legs. If they get wet from cycling in the rain, they dry a lot faster than trousers or jeans.
cranberries87@reddit
GOD, please no!!! 😩
Gab83IMO@reddit
They are in my garden.... great for catching seeds as they dry. Teehehe.
Sea-Significance8047@reddit
Pantyhose, especially black, have been a staple here in NYC for a few years now. They provide a bit of warmth in 50-ish degree weather and don’t look weird with formalwear in the winter, unlike opaque tights.
sageamericanidiot@reddit
I never stopped wearing them. I don't wear them often, as I prefer slacks, but when I wear formal to business casual skirts and dresses I always wear them with hoses. The quality has really improved. Plus, due to never outgrowing the shorts paired with long tube sock phase I have weird tan lines that pantyhose hides.
Ynot2_day@reddit
I’ve never stopped! It depends on the situation and the weather of course, but I’m never gonna go bare legged in the winter with a dress/skirt on!
Astrazigniferi@reddit
I wear them when I’m dressing up fancy in cooler months because bare feet are uncomfortable in dress shoes and those no-show socklet things don’t work for me. When it’s warm I wear sandals. If it’s more casual in winter, I wear fleece tights. But fancy dresses and professional skirts still get nylons. I wore them a couple weeks ago to a show, although the time before that was probably several years ago.
Quinalla@reddit
As soon as it was socially acceptable to not wear hose/tights, I threw them all away and never looked back.
Also, leggings under dresses = win when it is cold. Hose does barely help, but it is not great.
TheConcreteGhost@reddit
Winter, for sure. I do keep sheers around for hotter months. They just make my legs look so dang good. (I’m mostly legs with a 35” inseam). My mom raised me to wear stockings with dresses and skirts and I never dropped that bit of learning.
5tealthNinjaWhattt@reddit
I love the sheer ones with lacy patterns. Super cute. My husband thinks they’re pretty hot because of draws attention to the thighs.
purplelilac701@reddit
I have hyperpigmentation and marks on my legs so I like how pantyhose and knee highs can hide them or mask them.
toodledootootootoo@reddit
I love hose!! Thicker tights if I’m wearing a cute casual dress in colder months, and hose when I’m dressed up. They feel sexy and classy lol
Eclectic_Paradox@reddit
There are tights that look like pantyhose but are thick and fleece lined for cooler months.
Kittypie75@reddit
Colored and shiny nylons are def making a comeback.
After_Preference_885@reddit
I think everyone should do what they're most comfortable doing
I am not comfortable bare legged (which means you'll only ever see me in pants) but I support my bare legged sisters
ManateeNipples@reddit
They started to come out with some that work like shapewear for your belly and don't get holes the second your fingernail has the audacity to come in contact with it. Yeah I've noticed them coming back too
StrongAsMeat@reddit
Yes and it's glorious. Look up Sheertex, they're virtually indestructible.
No_Today_4903@reddit
I haven’t worn them in 25 years or better. The last time I wore a dress to a funeral it was warmer so I didn’t need them. I have dresses I could wear in the summer and there again I haven’t worn them in over 5 years, idek why I keep them. I always feel weird in a dress myself. They’re so cute on everyone, idk.
ShutYourDumbUglyFace@reddit
Not if I have anything to say about it. Tights are OK. Hose are bullshit.
BoysenberryKind5599@reddit
They have tights that look like hose, now.
CheesyRomantic@reddit
About 2 years ago I stopped wearing them. I might occasionally make an exception in the winter months (we hit -30C°). But not for warmth… they never kept me warm. It’s bc my legs get neon white in the winter months which show off my permanent bruises and veins… the nylons kinda camouflage that a little.
teatsqueezer@reddit
I just ordered some coloured ones
sarahbobeara87@reddit
Never stopped wearing them as well
alieninhumanskin10@reddit
Yes, I wear them in the winter so I can wear dresses. I saw some actresses doing it and thought I could pull it off too
folksongcat@reddit
I hope not. I can’t remember the last time I wore pantyhose. I wear regular tights sometimes if I’m wearing a skirt when it’s cool. Never the tan hose though.
Ohio_gal@reddit
Tights not hose, and usually only if cold.
La_Croix_Life@reddit
I never stopped 💅
unlovelyladybartleby@reddit
They were probably trying to look nice for the funeral. I haven't seen anyone under 70 wearing anything but fishnets in a decade unless it's a bride at a wedding or a stuffy bereaved person at a funeral
mollyjwink@reddit
Only because im freezing all the time
