Let's hope grandma is just a really hip 90-year old woman who loves video games.
Unlikely-Strike-8753@reddit
My grandma, who was born in 1926, wore out two Gameboys playing the shit out of Tetris.
OutcomeLegitimate618@reddit
My grandma played Dr. Mario. She was born in 1932. She was better at it than me. She also had a Gameboy. I never even got a Gameboy.
O_o-22@reddit
I wore out 2 raspberry pi game boys playing the shit out of Dr Mario
Effective_Parsnip936@reddit
I consistently challenge people to a Dr. Mario showdown… Haven’t lost yet. (Also not a grandma, but I assume that will just take my game to the next level?!)
Mochigood@reddit
My 90 year old grandma had an NES at the business she owned "for the kids". She was getting really good at Mario, and was beating grandpa, so he put it away saying they were wasting their time. Sore loser, lol.
GristleMcThornbody1@reddit
My mom was the queen of Contra. She could beat the whole game without losing a life and then play the hard mode until she got bored of it. When I was a kid I thought she was some kind of a savant, but I now know it was because she played it all day while we were at school. It was like watching Michaelangelo paint, she was a contra virtuoso.
Nitemare2020@reddit
My mom would play our NES while I was at school too! We were playing Dragon Warrior together. She would try to get past certain stages and stuff that we were having a hard time with and then I'd take over after school until dad got home (not even an hours worth of play time). We didn't have the Nintendo guide or maps for the game, so we'd spent a lot of time walking in circles trying to find stuff. Took us forever to find the swamp that had the mirror that you were supposed to make the dog following you look at so it would change the dog back into the princess. We never beat the game. 😆
ScaryGarry_SG1@reddit
I remember how excited I was to pick up Dragon Warrior when it came out. Apparently I was the only one because next year, for the first time ever, Nintendo would give you a FREE copy of Dragon Warrior alongside a Nintendo Power subscription..leaving me salty as hell!
GristleMcThornbody1@reddit
Haha I got my copy by signing up for Nintendo power. I loved that game though. I didn't finish it as a kid but I have replayed it a few times as an adult and beat it. One of my favorite NES games.
GristleMcThornbody1@reddit
Haha that's wild. My dad was the one that liked rpg titles. I still remember how excited we were when he beat the dragonlord in the original dragon warrior while me and my brothers cheered him on from the floor.
Nitemare2020@reddit
Surprisingly, my dad wasn't into video games, and he was 8 years my mom's junior. He would have been in his 20s when the Odyssey came out and arcades were all the rage. Pinball and whatnot. He was more of a cards, dominoes, and darts type of dad. He remembered the Atari, and I was gifted a hand me down from a cousin (his niece) with a million cartridges, but he maybe played that and the NES once each. Being a huge fan of boxing and Mike Tyson, he bought me "Mike Tysons PUNCHOUT" and I think that's the only game he tried to play one time. My mom and I spent many hours shooting ducks and playing Tetris together. He remembered all the Pac-Man games, Joust, Dig-Dug, Space Invaders, Qbert, but even though I owned all those games, he never took interest in it the way my mom did. Come to think of it, the many times he took us to play mini golf at Putt-Putt Golf with the tiny little "Funworks" arcade in the corner, he never played those either. We did. But I did spend many a weekend and late nights at the table playing rummy and dominoes with him at the kitchen table. ❤️❤️❤️
GristleMcThornbody1@reddit
Yeah my folks were older parents too, but there were a few games they played during the NES era. I attribute it to the fact that we only had the one TV in the living room, so they saw how much fun we were having with it. By the time we got the SNES we had a second TV in the basement with the game consoles hooked up and they stopped playing them.
My folks never played arcade games either. Dad would save all his quarters for when we would go to the beach in the summer and give all of us kids a pocketfull and mom and dad would go get a drink at the pizza place down the boardwalk.
I remember using Dad's maps of the legend of zelda though. Specifically the forest maze lol
Nitemare2020@reddit
I had maps and the Nintendo Guide for Final Fantasy... 4? I can't recall. I was never into Zelda, we didn't own it. Funny, my eldest is a Zelda fanatic and couldn't care less about FF. 😆 He didn't get it from me!!
ScaryGarry_SG1@reddit
LOL Grandpa said... alright that's enough!
GalaxyRedRanger@reddit
This is all I’m emotionally prepared to handle today.
PuzzledCatfish@reddit
Hey now, my Grandma introduced me to the NES and the joys of Tetris back in the early 90’s (she was probably 45 or so then?), and she’d be 77 today, so yeah for sure it can be an even older Grandma!! 😂
PirateWheeler40@reddit
Yup. Game over, man. Game over.... now, if you'll excuse me, I must tinker in the garage for six or seven hours in order to regain some sense of control.
PirateWheeler40@reddit
Edit to fix grammar because I can't unsee my mistakes.
kissassforliving@reddit
My sister, Born 1980, is a grandmother a few times over….hahahaha. I am older and nowhere near Grandpa status. I raised party animals and proud of it.
thetwelveofsix@reddit
Born in 1980 and just became a father.
acquaman831@reddit
I have a cousin and aunt that became grandmothers prior to the age of 40. I’m 43 and just now considering having kids with my girlfriend.
QueenInYellowLace@reddit
Dear lord. I am a couple of years older than your sister and I still have kids at home.
Infamous_Top677@reddit
I was born in 80 too, but not even close to grandma (thank goodness! ) I hope my son doesn't get caught up in the idea that he has to marry and have kids to be happy. I want him to be happy first.
ineptplumberr@reddit
My oldest (26) made me a grandparent this week. My youngest kid is 4.
Apprehensive_Hat8986@reddit
Clearly she raised party animals too. You just made sure yours were smart.
missbohica@reddit
Oh! My! God!
The words I needed to read today! In the correct order!!!
protossaccount@reddit
We were 1 when this was released in the USA and the oldest of us was 8.
This is the first time I’m realizing that the NES was more of a Gen X console. I always have seen its as the first Millennial console but maybe that’s more the Super Nintendo and Genesis. It’s a weird mix for us, I don’t know how many adults were into video games back then.
kayla622@reddit
I didn’t own an NES, but I played my friend’s NES in 1st-2nd grade (1990-1991) while I waited at her house to leave for school. My first console was an SNES that I got in 1994.
coci222@reddit
I went to school with a girl who became a grandmother at 32. So I'm going with that in this instance as well

BichezNCake@reddit
Bruh… grandmas from when the NES were new can be, like, 40 years old. Probably a little older but to just assume 90 is wild to me 😂
kayla622@reddit
I am well aware that people who played NES (e.g., people in this group) when it was new are old enough to be grandparents. I was trying to make everyone feel better--so I picked a really old age to make us seem younger by comparison.
BichezNCake@reddit
It made me feel old 😆 😭

Lots of Grandma's houses had an NES back in the day. Let's not be too hasty with our depression hehe
gesis@reddit
My great aunt was fierce at Tetris, and was a big fan of the Lolo series and Dr. Mario. She'd be in her 80s now, had heart disease not won out.
There were a lot of older people who were into the 2600 and NES.
wxguy215@reddit
If it helps, until my grandmother wasn't healthy enough to be playing, she loved video games like Tetris, Dr Mario and legend of Zelda.
OnlyGuestsMusic@reddit
TBF, my grandparents played NES back in the day. They owned their own. In fact, my grandfather had Coleco, Intellivision and Atari as well. OG adult gamer.
amertune@reddit
90? The NES launch in the US was only about 40 years ago.
60 is both old enough to be "grandma" to a teen or young 20-something and young enough to have been a 20-something herself when she bought it new at the department store.
IcedCoffeeVoyager@reddit
For what it’s worth, my wife’s great aunt is about to be 80 and she plays Final Fantasy VII on PS2 in her nursing home room. True story.

I saw a post in a "generation" group someone asked "What songs did your grandparents introduce you to?" and then started listing musicians like Madonna. Um excuse me WHAT. At least in my grandparent's house (silent generation) the only music we listened to was classical lol. But also MADONNA.
gaarkat@reddit
Haha ouch
PrincessSarahHippo@reddit
Well I feel like an antique now.
I do know a few people in our age group that are proud grandparents, but all of them had kids in high school and their kids either did the same or had them just after. Woo, go you.
ironic-hat@reddit
We associate it with childhood, but Gen X and Baby Boomers also owned these consoles, not to mention many people don’t take older consoles with them when they move out of their parents house, so from their kid’s perspective it’s “Grandma’s NES”.
Source: my 6 year old son has been collecting old Nintendo consoles, and my parents have been giving him my old ones, so from his perspective, they’re his grandparents’s.
Lily_Thief@reddit
My mom was a Zelda fanatic until the day she died. I still have her 3ds with Orcana of Time in it.

My grandma (born in 1922) had an Atari at her house in the 80s. She got it both for herself and her grandkids.
eatelectricity@reddit
Can confirm. My dad was a boomer and he played the shit out of Dr. Mario back in the day.
EnlightenedDragon@reddit
Mom was born in 59, she would still absolutely destroy me in Dr. Mario.
thejunkmanadv@reddit
I recently had a similar conversation with my kids while we were listening to records. TLDR: Dad's (me) music is also Grandpa/Grandma's music. Now granted when I was young I bought new & used records and mixed it in with my parents. So some artist/albums are uniquely "mine" but to them its all the same. It is "Dad music" or "Garage Music" to them.
0kokuryu0@reddit
My Aunt had a couple consoles at her house for the kids. Her house was where the family reunions happened, and she loved having family over. So the basement room had the game consoles and some toys for nieces, nephews, grandkids, etc. she also got a decked out van that came with a TV and a Nintendo.
My ex-stepmom had an original Gameboy she kept in her purse with Tetris and Link's Awakening. Just for something to do when she was bored.
exqvisitely@reddit
Exactly. My Boomer mom used our Atari and Nintendo nearly as much as I did.
Bay-Area-Tanners@reddit
Yep- my dad got one when he was about 30. My oldest is 16. My dad was in his early 20s when i was born but i was in my late 20s when my son was born.
We may not like it, but the math maths.
GalaxyRedRanger@reddit
That’s true. In that famous “Nuts For Nintendo” 20/20 clip from 1988, John Stossel says he bought one for him and his wife. He was around 30 at the time.

BigFatBlackCat@reddit

MetaVulture@reddit
Simple. Mom born in the 60s held on to the family console of the child born in the 80s and gifted it to the grandchild born in the 2000/2010s.
Weird_Squirrel_8382@reddit
My mom is 60, she's a grandma, and she regularly beat my ass in Mario Kart. She probably still could, I should ask her.

Slugwheat@reddit

Feisty_Crops@reddit

spderweb@reddit
I mean, we're in our 40s, mostly. If your kid is now 20, then their kid would be 1. At the youngest across the board, hopefully. So this was definitely an older gamer. My parents are in their 60s, and my dad introduced me to atari. And they got us a genesis and Dreamcast. And played the games too.
So it's totally reasonable that this is a proper grandparent and not a bunch of teen pregnancies.

Let's say the NES belonged to a 11-yr old at Christmas 1986 (wide U.S. release of NES that September), who would be 50 y.o. today. For this to post to be from a current, let's say, 10yr old, the original owner of that NES would've become a grandparent at 40. So, depending on baby math, they and their kid would've each become new parents at 20 y.o. or so. It's tight, but it's not, like, too far out of bounds for traditional cultures/military families, to say nothing of the obvious case of unplanned pregnancies.
1messedupmonkey@reddit
None of my grandkids get to touch my console and game collection until I'm long under the ground. It's part of the trusts I set up regarding my will. My used xenosaga games alone sell for the hundreds per disc. I've got an original ff7 still wrapped in it's box because I already had a copy. I've got every, still in working condition console, that has debuted since 1982.
Plus all the current ones. Plus the games to go with all of them. It's a whole inheritance.
