What's the real value of this? Not my listing
Posted by wolfemsop@reddit | overlanding | View on Reddit | 137 comments
All right I found this listing on my local marketplace and I reached out to them and they said they expect to get asking price of $179,000 and won't budge. Remember this is a a 21-year-old truck with 140,000 miles. I get that this is a cool rig but is this realistic? They're justification is this what cost 250k new. But that's with the truck that would be over 150K already brand new.
Dudebutdrugs@reddit
It has 128,000 miles…
linuxhiker@reddit
I bet they get close. Those things are ridiculously expensive new.
WombatMcGeez@reddit
Agreed. Hard to say without seeing the interior and quality of the components, but it looks like a 150k truck all day
wolfemsop@reddit (OP)
The interior is nice and it was well built but this is not a professional outfit build. It's just some guy who bought a used truck and built this.
noah5666@reddit
Yeah that’s the big thing. If you have the money to spend $180,000 on a camper, you don’t want some dudes project. I’d get a totally custom sprinter van, or any other used overlanding vehicle. Just the fact that the generator is “Not included” tells you a LOT about the the potential quality of everything. Without the camper this is like a 15-20k truck
Marokiii@reddit
$180k isnt going to get you a professional built out truck camper like this. Earth roamers start at $800k.
Thought_Ninja@reddit
Some of the bigger/higher end Earth Roamers go for $1.5mm lol
voxelalchemist@reddit
That is like most of us haha
FreidasBoss@reddit
Depending on their knowledge and skillsets that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Seems like original owner built it for personal use, if that’s the case they’re far more willing to spend time and money on better materials.
KaiserSozes-brother@reddit
Not $150k on a 2004 chassis, that is 21 years old. If anyone has lived in it long term the interior is degraded as well.
Google says the truck is worth $13,700-$27,500. The box is worth another $20,000 at best.
REAL_EddiePenisi@reddit
It has banjo bolts
$5 million dollars
Upstairs-Parsley3151@reddit
An American grazed his hands over this majestic beast, at least 8 million.
raining_sheep@reddit
You have to think a converted sprinter van goes for around $100k so yeah this is about right.
Gonna_do_this_again@reddit
I think they're 500k new
mgysmls@reddit
Wait, you've left quite a few Ford-bashing comments which begs the question of why the hell did you even reach out to the seller? Just to troll? Doesn't seem like you'd be an interested buyer regardless of price.
wolfemsop@reddit (OP)
For 40k sure id get it. I have been stranded in a Ford plenty of time
drossen@reddit
You must be trolling at this point. The camper box is worth over 40k alone. Having an older chassis truck with a modern box is more appealing these days than a brand new one where everything is computerized, def, etc
blackhawk905@reddit
Not necessarily when the 6.0 and 6.4 power strokes were known to not be the greatest of engines with serious flaws without a ton of money spent on fixing those flaws, this guy's says he got it bulletproofed but you'd need receipts from a reputable shop to verify that or else you're taking a risk.
GryptpypeThynne@reddit
You're either trolling or unintelligent enough to have trouble remembering whether your shirt goes on the feet legs or the hang legs
tippytoe-lemontree@reddit
Cool, so the whole point of your post was to scratch your anti-ford itch.
mgysmls@reddit
So you'd pay $40k to get stranded? Makes sense.
FrogFlavor@reddit
Meh. I’ve been stranded in a Lexus, VW, Subaru, even Toyota. Anything can have mechanical problems. My last ford had a notoriously bad” 5.4L Triton and i sold it at 290K mi, it’s still on the road aged 22.
blahblurbblub@reddit
About 20,000 in expenses every 2-3 years regardless of actual price of vehicle.
wolfemsop@reddit (OP)
My thought to. This is not a reliable truck and that engine is crap. Might as well buy a new one at that price.
Competitive-Image799@reddit
Said it's bulletproofed 🤷
wolfemsop@reddit (OP)
Yeah... Still a Ford
PonyThug@reddit
Mine is running great at 218k miles.
Mechagouki1971@reddit
Yeah, Tacomas and 4Runners are well known for be oming unreliable at 120K-170K miles. It's like the thing most people know about them.
/s in case it wasn't glaringly obvious.
PonyThug@reddit
Idk my small sample of 7 shows that everything has issues
Mechagouki1971@reddit
I don't think you can use vehicles that are unlikely to have 100K miles on them yet to prove that historically Toyota trucks are unreliable.
Maintenancehaul@reddit
F.O.R.D. Found on the roadside dead.
Source: I’m driving a ‘14 that was found in a ditch 10 years ago. I’m full time on the road, 334k, just have to keep on top of it. I do actually love the truck (and motor), but certain motors Are Really crap.
PonyThug@reddit
Toyota had a huge engine recall recently and people still say they are the most reliable
Maintenancehaul@reddit
It’s hard to argue with a old Camry
Competitive-Image799@reddit
Ford has made plenty of reliable vehicles. Did you come here just to have your prior opinions reinforced?
tippytoe-lemontree@reddit
Yes. It's the entire point of this post.
Logan_urbex2@reddit
Not the 6.0 lol. Also have a company transit van that is almost mechanical totaled at 130k miles
DrZedex@reddit
Lol. Yeah, my brother once spent $16k (pre covid dollars) to "bulletproof" a 6.no. It ate shit within two years. It was a weekend vehicle for him so it was probably less than 10k miles. There's no fixing a 6.oops
The_Wrecking_Ball@reddit
All those engine mods and missed the most critical one - air to oil cooling, no cooler.
Logan_urbex2@reddit
I’ve head that from every 6.0 owner I’ve known & it’s in the shop about once a month haha.
drossen@reddit
Lol, a new one and camper for 250k instead of 179K?
DogFarm@reddit
There are probably 2-3x as many 6.0s on the road than 7.3s, very well known engine at this point. Helps big time if you can wrench.
joshuaherman@reddit
The issue is to convert a truck to 4x4 is about $15-20k. Then you have the custom box on the back, which is likely FRP or honeycomb sandwich panels at around 10k+. Then you have the electric at around 1k-2k for a cheap basic system. Then cabinets and bedding at 3k-4k.
The truck is about 60k-70k.
Same_Lack_1775@reddit
The only way you are getting an electrical system that inexpensive is using a jackery or ecotech system.
joshuaherman@reddit
I did say cheap. You can buy a battery for around $150 - $200 for 100ah. You could get a Renogy dc/dc charger for $280. And a solar panel for $250-$300 for 200w. 10 gauge wire 50ft for $60-$70. Maybe a blade fuse block for $20. You would be ballpark $1k.
CompetitiveAppeal663@reddit
Depends if you are talking new components or used. New, you should plan on that for the batteries alone….used all that stuff loses value super quick.
mountainwocky@reddit
That box is going to be more than 10k too.
earoar@reddit
You don’t have to convert it. Lots of 4x4 F550s out there, I’m actually sitting in one right now.
wolfemsop@reddit (OP)
How reliable would you say a 21 year old one is
earoar@reddit
Depends how it’s taken care of. 6.0 is a decent motor if the egr is delete and powers kept low.
wolfemsop@reddit (OP)
That my big problem here. We have a Ford with a 6L in the driveway with a cracked piston from bad rings. It's a cool camper it's just such a shame they put it on that truck.
Plrdr21@reddit
Unless I missed something in the post this truck should have come as a 4x4 from the factory.
mountainwocky@reddit
That box is going to be more than 10k too.
joshuaherman@reddit
I have looked into building my own custom rig and have priced out much of the listed equipment.
Extension-Fly9057@reddit
Thats a $5000 truck with a $30,000 camper on the back of it
Could be built for much less
earoar@reddit
Really stupid take. Trucks worth ~20k and the camper would be 6 figures to build. Still overpriced but 35k is equally absurd.
Extension-Fly9057@reddit
You pay 20k for a 20 year old ford with the worst diesel ever? DM me I have a few for sale
earoar@reddit
Calling the 6.0 the worst diesel ever shows what you know lmao.
Would I pay that? Probably not? But that’s what they’re worth.
Extension-Fly9057@reddit
Go type "Worst diesel truck engines" in google and LMK what comes up
earoar@reddit
Every max force, every paccar, 6.4 power stroke, 6.5 Detroit. All much worse.
wolfemsop@reddit (OP)
It's a nice camper but is not professionally built. That truck cannot be reliable at that age and mileage. It's not like it's a Toyota
earoar@reddit
I’ve been in lots of power strokes with twice that mileage , they definitely can be reliable.
If you don’t want it, don’t buy it no need to make a reddit post to whine about it.
Blarghnog@reddit
Nice troll. 😈
Extension-Fly9057@reddit
You are only trolling yourselves paying 6 figures for these just becaue you are afraid of sleeping in a tent
drossen@reddit
What does sleeping in a tent have to do with buying a high end camping rig? Should people also ride a bike instead of buying a commuter car?
wolfemsop@reddit (OP)
Definitely. She's pretty delusional I thought. The truck is a lemon and the reliability at that age is shit.
Dieselfumes_tech@reddit
You can buy a 6.0 F550 for five grand? Where? I’ll take 10 for my business.
Extension-Fly9057@reddit
6.0 is insanely overrated by guys who dont drive 50k miles a year towing anything
Dieselfumes_tech@reddit
Overrated or not, you still can’t normally buy them for 5k, nor the 7k you edited your post to.
Extension-Fly9057@reddit
You can find tons from 5k-10k you pay more than 10k you are a sucker :)
cynicoblivion@reddit
Go ahead and post a listing then. Hard doubt.
K9WorkingDog@reddit
Where are these $5000 F550s?
earthlingjim@reddit
"to rival the quality of an EarthRoamer"
*Laughs in guy who builds EarthRoamers.
digit527@reddit
I guess I'm sitting on a goldmine. 😆
basic_asian_boy@reddit
It’s a cool build, but I don’t think it’s worth what they are asking for. At that price, I could buy a new flatbed F550 and have a competent shop build a camper shell and an outfitter build an interior exactly as I want it. It would have a warranty and be around a similar price…
Tonkatte@reddit
First rule of economics is: The value of something is what someone is willing to pay for it.
The second rule is: There’s a (buyer) born every minute.
As has been said, seller only needs one buyer. If he’s patient enough, he may get it.
A friend couldn’t sell his house as “he knew what it was worth” because of the money he sunk into it, regardless of the inspection-identified seriously cracked foundation.
But vehicles don’t come with the same disclosure requirements a house does.
Infamous_Charge2666@reddit
OP you are a tool and have no clue what things are worth
overlanding-ModTeam@reddit
Be Kind, Be Respectful
SecondhandTrout@reddit
An EarthRoamer carries 11Kw hours of lithium battery, a far cry from 400w/hours
50000WattsOfPower@reddit
This has 4x100Ah, so multiply by 12v = 4,800Wh.
starsandmoonsohmy@reddit
I bought a whole ass house for 18k more lmfao.
InTheLurkingGlass@reddit
This is an odd one. It may well be worth $180k to someone with the cash who doesn’t want to build their own, or sit on the waitlist for a company like Earthroamer.
To someone like me, it’s a really cool project, but I’ve long since learned the hard way about buying other people’s project vehicles. I wouldn’t touch it for $20k.
MilkAnAlmond@reddit
From one CO-familiar to another - search inside yourself. You really think some asshole near Durango isn't going to get suckered into a 15,000# "sO OfFrOaD cAPabLe" rig and dump all that money because truck campers are just so much cooler than a van? They'll probably get 160k.
wolfemsop@reddit (OP)
Some one might be enough of a sucker. But you can pretty much it a new one from a professional building company for a little bit more.
tippytoe-lemontree@reddit
You are way off. You *might* be able to get the habitat built for $200-$250K from a reputable company, but, it won't include the truck and all of the modifications and upgrades it would need to be considered off-road worthy.
FucknAright@reddit
It's worth it, have you seen comparable? Try building one yourself.
Tenement-on_Wheels@reddit
That sounds about right. Idk if that’s an Earthroamer build, but that kind of rig is crazy expensive
Longjumping-Drink186@reddit
I don't give a fuck NO Ford in existence is worth that much, not even half that. It's a fucking Ford, who the fuck spends almost $200k on a factory piece of shit? For real. 😂
foodfighter@reddit
A truck like this is worth what the highest bidder is willing to pay for it. Always has been, always will be.
And he won't get less than what he asks for it, so if I were him, I'd hope there was someone out there with a bunch of NVDA/MSFT/AMZN proiceeds burning a hole in their pocket.
This'll probably be the dream rig for someone out there.
MarcatBeach@reddit
for 75k you can get a camper back that has everything from bathroom to kitchen brand new. 50k you can get one that is pretty good. so lets go with the top end and 75k. that gives you 100k to buy a F350. I think with that budget you don't have to get a 2004.
estunum@reddit
The F550 we use for SAR is nothing but problems. That alone devalues whatever else is attached to it. If I was in the market, I’d factor the cost of a better truck and the transfer to it.
FartMasterFlexer@reddit
That 6.0 engine is a ticking timebomb. I had one that had more than 20k of “bulletproof” work done and the engine still failed at 180k.
Are_y0u_sure@reddit
Wtf is a injector o-ring?
ZOMBIE_N_JUNK@reddit
A 2004 truck that the build was completed in 2024?
Reddoraptor@reddit
130k miles. At 20 years old this much mileage, even if the metal parts are in good shape the plastic and rubber components will be degrading. My 2001 Ford had various pieces of the doors, dash, etc. start to crack and fall apart at around that age. If you want a build based on a pre-DEF truck, get a 1970s frame that doesn’t need smog and build from scratch, a 2004 does not seem like a good age to start from here.
DarthRumbleBuns@reddit
That’s $40k of truck and $30k of camper.
VANILLAxFROSTY@reddit
The company Earthroamer charges a minimum of like $500,000 for one of their campers built off F-450s and up I believe? This doesn’t seem TOO bad in comparison, even if it’s not on the same level 😅
SecondhandTrout@reddit
A new EarthRoamer starts at $800k
VANILLAxFROSTY@reddit
Sheesh I must be thinking of a used one then
gebuzz@reddit
A brand new earth roamer, talking about 2024+, cost over 500k
SecondhandTrout@reddit
Try over $800k
Hugimog@reddit
Similar listings can be found on https://expeditionmeister.com/ in order to compare prices and gain inspiration for kind a like expedition trucks
Maintenancehaul@reddit
If it is the 6.1 then the selling price should only be for the camper. You’ll need a new motor soon enough.
Humble_Incident1073@reddit
It's already sagging in the a$$
Former_Travel2839@reddit
This is the Museroamer. There is a full YouTube build on this rig.
adeadhead@reddit
Goddamn that's a nice rig
SuicideSaintz@reddit
I dont know the value and this is not my realm but I bet they get real close to the asking price. I have seen this build showcased and there is a whole YT series dedicated to the build (10+ part series). There was also a whole forum following when this was built.
throwawaydixiecup@reddit
Has anyone ever found that writing “Serious buyers only” actually weeds out annoying unserious buyers?
penywisexx@reddit
I find I get less BS when I put in no trades, cash only (or similar wording) in my listings.
BigBootyGrape@reddit
“We have Earth Roamer at home”
wolfemsop@reddit (OP)
What did it cost. They are cool but would you pay that price for a 21 year old Ford and a camper
mountainwocky@reddit
I don’t think they are serious. The whole “We have x at home” is a meme phrase.
BigBootyGrape@reddit
Idk bro, I can see where they are getting the price suggestion from but honestly, this would probably sell 40-80k on a bid website
wolfemsop@reddit (OP)
Yeah this ain't a earth roam
runtheroad@reddit
Seems crazy they spent that much to build it and used such an old truck as the base. It's worth what someone is willing to pay for it, which is almost certainly a lot less than it cost to build.
Fishgedon@reddit
Not that crazy, I mean in Europe people build up old military vehicles or 30 year old land cruisers. Maybe not for that price but they are still expensive.
K9WorkingDog@reddit
I wouldn't want a truck with DEF for this application
toefungi@reddit
Surely someone spending 200k on a rig like this can afford a delete kit.
Though I suppose states like California exist.
But still, this is a 15k truck before the house was built on the back.
K9WorkingDog@reddit
I've never seen a 550 pre-DEF for less than 20k
wolfemsop@reddit (OP)
Yup. You can't slap something together and expect it to be worth some crazy amount because "that's what it cost".
slaterson1@reddit
I'm not sure how much you know about "old trucks" but an F550 with a 7.3 is in pretty high demand, it's got no emissions to deal with and is relatively fuel efficient. It's probably the most reliable of the diesels offered in that era and is a real workhorse, if somewhat underpowered.
MagicPistol@reddit
$0 value to me
I ain't buying a 21 year old Ford.
wolfemsop@reddit (OP)
Someone is going to get stranded somewhere real shitty.
mountainwocky@reddit
At least when they get stranded they’ll have their home with them. Might make the wait for a recovery more endurable.
wolfemsop@reddit (OP)
Lol.
Own-Lemon8708@reddit
With that truck as the base? 30-50k for some brave sucker might move it
Sasquatters@reddit
My wife and I own a conversion company if you want to build something custom and bring your own truck. We have an opening in a couple months.
Exciting_Ad_1097@reddit
It’s whatever someone is willing to pay. It only takes one person to buy. This past year I saw some LMTV rigs go for over $400k.
JLee50@reddit
They're trying to cash in on earthroamer pricing.
CandidArmavillain@reddit
I think it's a realistic price. Its not a good price, but there are a lot of people out there with more money than sense who would buy this
wolfemsop@reddit (OP)
Haha. They be real excited when there stranded in a broke down Ford in the middle of nowhere.
Dry_Elk_8578@reddit
I’d say not anywhere near what they’re asking… was it built when the truck was brand new? Or was the truck used and they built a camping rig with the cab and chassis?
Jonesy792@reddit
Listing said the rig was completed in 2020. So either a used truck or the build took 16 years to complete..
wolfemsop@reddit (OP)
Some did this during peak demand and I think she has buyers remorse. At that price you could find a near new one.
