Experience doesn’t do shit neither.
Ive got 2.5 years, master’s degree and my skills are at mid level, extensive portfolio in well presented website, active github profile the whole 9 yards. I’ve never seen anyone even remotely care that I have a masters degree, or consider it experience.
Hr doesn’t care to even respond. I am only left guessing. Maybe too little experience for mid level, too high level for junior. (Not like they have legitimate junior role listings anyways) I’ve shipped titles, but theres always someone with more experience.
I don't think I've ever seen a programming job that actually cared about what level of higher education you have. It's all about experience, proficiency, and what languages you know
There's people out there genuinely arguing that the hatred towards HR is rooted in misogyny and not, you know, having to deal with any goddamn job recruiter/HR person ever
Said it before and I'll say it again because I wish someone had told me sooner:
Pro tip: Amazon does not ask for a resume and you do not need to interview to work at their warehouses. They give you a bullshit assessment for you to demonstrate that you can follow simple instructions and they give you a job offer if you aren't too mentally deficient. The hardest part of the process is passing a drug test.
Source: I just started working at an Amazon warehouse because no one else would hire me.
Been there 5 months now. It's not a good job and it's certainly not for everyone, but the pay is at least a lot better than fast food or retail where I live and it is something to put on a resume.
ummm you're supposed to network and get jobs through le nepotism, do you even socialmaxx bruh fr fr?
just give em the firm handshake and stare into their soul
Every job I’ve ever gotten was from knowing someone. Hundreds of online apps went straight in the trash, but when you know someone working there suddenly they’re bending over backwards to get you in. The game is not fair at all, but that’s life. One day I’ll help my friend’s kid get a job and it will come full circle.
This is quite literally what I’ve been told to do, some employers may want a recommendation and my brother has told me to just get someone to lie for me and say that I can in fact do the job. (obviously don’t do this for something serious, only do this for getting your first job, once you have actual experience at a few places you won’t have to lie)
Unironically helped a friend get a tech job with no experience like this once.
He needed a job, I vouched for him for the open position on my team. He interviewed and somehow didn't seem totally incompetent.
Hiring supervisor came and asked me to confirm. "Yeah yeah he's smart and a fast learner for anything he doesn't know"
Gets hired.
Later told he was hired over someone far more qualified just because he spoke English natively instead of as a second language, based on my recommendation.
Felt kinda bad but also had a lot of fun working with him.
But yeah nepotism and networking beat everything else for sure.
Fr, I just discovered the power of le union. I’ve already been in three and they all sucked. But I’m in one that has let me use like 60 days of FMLA, from a chronic neurological problem I happened to develop a year ago. Somehow I’m not fucking fired yet.
But I just learned my favorite coworker, who assigns me the title of best friend has a sister who’s single and he wants me to meet her badly.
Why is it relevant? Turns out homeboy is related to the regional manager and is literally unfireable. So may as well marry in at this rate, since I’m already a loser that’s dying and constantly missing work. Besides heard she LOVES EVERYTHING I LOVE $uicideBoy$, Bring Me The Horizon, omg she sounds amazing. Gonna meet her soon. 👅
Anon doesn't realize that the only way ypu get your foot in is by lying about having experience, then after the first job you actually have experience.
It sucks but its not like employees make the rules here, the employers and their dogshit unrealistic expectations do.
You're gana have to lie, not because your unqualified or whatever but the great big filter is going to be an HR rep who doesnt actually understand what your job is. So you pretty much just have to tailor yours to what an HR rep would think is ideal.
With the decline of Unionized labor came HR to make sure that such efforts would never again happen. They are not for you they are managing you as a resource.
I’ve seen it before. Too qualified can be interpreted by some hiring managers as “I don’t really plan to stay here longer than a year and will job hop to another position the moment an opportunity comes up”
Capitalism requires people who are permanently destitute so that they can serve as an ever-present living reminder of what will happen to the rest if they disobey their masters. So, in order to keep enough people homeless that they're visible, but not so many that they're able to organize, they have to make these ridiculous, self-contradicting systems.
In my experience, you are more likely to get a job if you are directly interviewed by your team leader. HR can talk a lot, but you will most likely get ghosted.
You start using AI to fabricate fake references, repeatedly mass-submit resumes and reverse engineer the filtering they use so you can force through the filter.
Arms-race, baby. The only loser is anyone who pays the continually rising energy prices of the cold war - meaning everyone.
Ive hired a few dozen folks, a lot of first time jobbers. They are often graduates from uni or college, and have had a part time job at some point. That's all I'm looking for
Literally just keep applying. 99% of the time, they don't even know what they're looking at. If you're able to show up in person, keep going over and over again. If they have multiple recruiters, nice, that's a bonus. Regardless, a lot of places are so bogged down in corporate bureaucracy that you can probably speak to the same person 3 times and they won't remember you for the first 2 until they actually gain interest in you.
I've done this for (almost) every job I've gotten.
