Not sure if this was typically a "Dutch" thing, or if it was used globally. I do know everyone in my elementary school had one of these pencil boxes. (Came in red and blue IIRC).

Created by fellow Dutchy Samuel Meijerink. He had significant succes with his products (mostly in the Netherlands). You may also remember the all plastic CD storage boxes with a sliding door or the sorting boxes that 'rolled up'. Very 80's :-D

Our pencil cases in Canada were a zippered pouch made out of either sturdy fabric or vinyl. The vinyl ones usually had cartoon characters on them, like this one.

I never had a fancy pencil box but I liked the ones that had a little sharpener and eraser that popped out, some other kids had them in 4th grade.

I did have a pencil box in elementary school here in the US but I remember it being tin or metal. I also remember it having a print of some character- either He-Man or Star Wars or something.

I had one too when in elementary school, and many other kids did too. They were quite popular for a while.
Am Dutch btw.

Pencil cases weren’t very common at my school in the U.S. and I don’t ever remeber seeing one like that. A few of us, including me, did have pencil cases with a bunch of pop out spring loaded compartments that were realistically more toys than serious school supplies but they were fun.
