Laser Bore Sighting: Worth while tool or Gimmick?

I often see and hear from people around me when im sighting in red dots, scopes and other optics that: “Why dont you use a bore laser and save the extra ammo.”
But when i see them using the laser, i see it still takes them dozens of rounds to get even close to their target without walking their targets out.
I guess i wanna ask, if i was gonna get a laser sighter, how exactly does one use it properly? I think too many folks out there just say “eh, they line up, it should work.”

I just look down the barrel and line up my reticle or scope with a dot on the wall.. Gets me on paper at 25 yards

This is the way

That is a way. More than one way to skin that cat.

The point of a laser boresight tool is to get you on the paper right away, and ideally close to where you need to be.
But then you still need to zero your sights normally after that.
They're good for what they are, but they're not an instant zero tool.

Exactly will get windage right elevation will need tweaked

cost like $15 bucks on amazon and will get you on paper at about 25-50 yards...... from there you can dial it in... It thought it was worth it.
Edit: they make them where it's shaped like the round for your gun, so yo ujust load it in there and twist your scope knobs until the red dot is in the middle of the reticle.

Here's the problem with that.
The laser isn't that bright. So, people end up using it inside the house at very close range.
If you dial your red dot in at 10 yards it's going to be way off at 50.

Well, you would have to end up estimating the sight height over bore then offsetting the point of aim versus observed laser aim point.
The bigger issue is the lasers typically rely a muzzle mounted magnet (assumes a perfectly square and concentric muzzle), a bore spud (loose fit), or a chamber laser (assumes chamber is perfectly inline with a straight barrel).

Kind of makes you wonder where they don't make a bullet with a cat laser in it.

I got one for my xdm9. When I was new. And my sight is spot on at 40. I just ordered another for my new 300blk arp. I don't have an indoor near me that's beyond 40, and the only outdoor is private, and only goes to 100. (Probably going to join that private). But still. I got frustrated trying to sight in my 300, so much so that I had to pull out my xdm. Put 9/10 in the forehead from 40, while I was lolly gagging wasting ammo for my 300

Wondering which boresight you purchased?

Laser boresighters are completely unnecessary. Even to just "get you on paper."
SovereignDevelopment@reddit
Lol y'all are really downvoting me despite the fact laser bore sighters first came around in 2003 and firearms have been around for about one thousand years. Tell me again how they're necessary.
SilverLine1914@reddit
Oh yeah man. If you aren’t running a muzzle loader your entire build is unnecessary. Who needs mags, or adjustable stocks, or external magazines, or free float barrels, or standard bullet design. Nah all you need is a ball and some gunpowder with a ramrod.
Gaius315@reddit
No one asked if they're necessary, they asked if they're worth having, those are 2 very different things. And the first automobile (as is widely accepted) didn't come out until 1886. Mankind traveled thousands of years without them so I guess that means they're completely unnecessary. Some things don't exist out of necessity, they exist to make things easier or more convenient. By your standard of "if people got by without it for a long time it's not necessary" even the wheel is unnecessary.
AnonAlcoholic@reddit
Lmao, yeah, what silly reasoning. "You're really going to tell me that external magazines are necessary when guns existed for almost a thousand years beforehand?" It actually hasn't been almost a thousand years unless you count fire lances, but that's what he said and it would be basically a negligible difference between the two in the grand scheme of things. The invention of the external magazine is much closer to the invention of the laser bore sight than the invention of guns themselves.

It's nice to have, but not necessary. Grab one on Amazon, mount it in your drill, and spin it down a long hallway. You can gauge how out of alignment they are by the size of the circle. If it's got adjustment screws, adjust until it barely moves when it spins in the drill. If it doesn't, return that shit.
I only shoot a few calibers, so I prefer to have the style that fits in the chamber instead of the muzzle mount ones.
I find that the ones I adjust get me damn near spot on.
Public_Captain2439@reddit
Because mounting things in drills is always 100%. I got my xdm9 sited in at 40yd with 1 round after using a 16 dollars Amazon bore laser. I think your experience may just have been negative. I just ordered another one for my new 300blk arp. Hopefully as a starting point at 100yd.

Have many boresite and always end up ging back and using my old leupold Collimater. Seems the old girl always works so much better!
iseab@reddit
Do they work ok outside in the sunlight?
Legoboy514@reddit (OP)
Close range yea, like up to 25 yards
