What else can I try? (Drinks).

I'm not a big drinker of alcohol, but I do enjoy a glass of two of white wine at the weekends. However, I'd like to branch out and try something different. I like the idea of a short drink to sip by the fire in the evenings. Kind of like whisky - but I can't abide the taste unfortunately. I don't have a sophisticated palate and terms to like fruity or sweet drinks (white wine, vodka and Coke etc). What would you recommend for someone like me?
BulkyAccident@reddit
Rum and coke might work for you.
CommercialToday1264@reddit (OP)
I do like a rum and Coke actually.
Skinsarelli@reddit
Chairman’s reserve spiced rum is great, no need for a mixer either! Lovely in front of a fire.
joshracer@reddit
There's a really nice local rum that is produced in Pembrokeshire, it's called Barti spiced rum, it's infused with seaweed. It has started to get popular outside our county and I'm sure you can order online. It's nice on it's own and mixed with coke.
space_absurdity@reddit
Spiced rum is the way to go! Even a dark spiced rum and coke 😋
joshracer@reddit
Yeah definitely! Especially if you've got a sweet tooth.
AilsasFridgeDoor@reddit
Alternatively spiced rum and ginger beer/ale
Kapika96@reddit
Amaretto.
Looks a lot like whisky, similar alcohol % too, so perfect for sipping by the firew especially with some ice cubes. Tastes like marzipan though, so not being into the taste of alcohol isn't really a problem.
Chemeh4@reddit
When I began learning how to mix drinks I used to drink all the cointreau
Typical_Efficiency_3@reddit
Martini.
Classic, gin, dry, with two olives
OldChorleian@reddit
Benedictine, on its own, with a mixer, or in a hot toddy.
Willing_Clothes6990@reddit
Maybe a calvados?
CommercialToday1264@reddit (OP)
Is that a liqueur? Is it widely available in supermarkets? Do you drink it by itself?
OldChorleian@reddit
It's surprisingly good in coffee.
Willing_Clothes6990@reddit
It’s a type of brandy made with apples or pears, it’s smoother and sometimes sweeter than whiskey or regular brandy (depending on the variety of apples/pears used). It’s not available in all supermarkets but you can get it in some Waitrose, and I would definitely recommend drinking it on its own with no ice. It’s delicious!
Teembeau@reddit
It's apple brandy from Normandy. Absolutely fierce stuff. I only cook with it.
space_absurdity@reddit
Bison grass Vodka with green apple juice. Really!
The vodka is slightly smoother and green apple juice neither tart nor too sweet. Its a really nice drink (and a hint coconutty to me?!)
I generally drink ale or rum but one night couldn't contemplate either. Good barman in a good bar suggested this. It was good!!
iolaus79@reddit
Tastes like McDonalds apple pie IMHO - add cinnamon and you have a Szarlotka (popular in Poland)
CD696969X@reddit
Make a Moscow mule, but make sure you use good quality Vodka.
huskydaisy@reddit
A ginger wine over ice is my go-to winter drink to sip in front of the fire. Not Stones which is very harsh, I'd recommend Lyme Bay.
Timely_Egg_6827@reddit
Try mead - huge variety of styles but tends to be mail order.
Gin and tonics is a nice one to try. Again a lot of variation and you can mix and match gins and tonics to get one you like.
runningman299@reddit
Try Stags Breath Liquor
It’s a mead/whiskey mix. It’s sweet AF but bloody lovely.
sellis80@reddit
Just had a look. Sounds really good. It’s liqueur not liquor by the way. Not being an arse, just thought I’d mention it.
runningman299@reddit
Yeh that’s autocorrected and I didn’t notice.
sellis80@reddit
Makes sense. Great suggestion still.
Forever_a_Kumquat@reddit
I'm partial to an Aperol spritz despite not really liking that sort of thing usually.
Aperol Prosecco Soda water Slice of Orange.
Rubberfootman@reddit
Strange isn’t it. Hate Aperol, love Aperol spritz.
Rubberfootman@reddit
Cherry brandy. Boozy but without that whisky hit. Or something herby like Becherovka.
BackgroundGate3@reddit
Cherry vodka
PainExtension3272@reddit
A bit of speed will do you good i spose
mysilvermachine@reddit
Port. Maybe even a white port.
MokausiLietuviu@reddit
There's a whole world of fortified wines that are wonderful to experience
MahatmaAndhi@reddit
Port and sherry are both fantastic drinks, generally. I love a ruby port especially.
CommercialToday1264@reddit (OP)
Ooh, this has reminded me that port and lemon is very quaffable.
LittleSadRufus@reddit
Pedro Ximinez is exceptional too.

Hard Seltzers are decent if not a big fan of booze.

Gun and tonic. Try one in a pub to avoid having to buy a bottle and then perhaps discovering you don't like it. They will try to talk you into a premium brand; refuse that, just go for the cheapest (in the pub). If you do like it, then experiment to find the one you like the best.
True-Abalone-3380@reddit
A London Dry such as Tanquaray or Beefeater with ice, a slice of lime, and 150ml of full-fat tonic for a double shot.
Nothing fancy, just a G&T as it should be.
wildOldcheesecake@reddit
Sir, this is Britain
space_absurdity@reddit
.. and I don't like doing shots!
_Blam_@reddit
Quite. We've got a very proud history of drinking copious amounts of gin.
True-Abalone-3380@reddit
Sherry, get a £10-20 bottle of Fino and pop it in the fridge. It's great on its own but also works well with a range of food.
It may be a little dry for you, but give it a good try. Make sure you savour it too, not just chucking it back.
petrolstationpicnic@reddit
I love a Pedro ximenez, just inspired to have one after dinner!
True-Abalone-3380@reddit
Are you from the Pedro Marketing Board? That specific brand is already recommended 3 times in this thread!!
It's not one I've tried so will give it a go, it does look on the sweeter side for me though.
kwakimaki@reddit
Sake. Sainsbury's and Waitrose sometimes have some Sawanotsuru, a pleasant sipping sake. Slightly fragrant, but not too strong in any direction.
sneakyblurtle@reddit
Cointreau with ice in a big chonky glass. Very tasty orange liqueur to sip on.
gilestowler@reddit
Try a good tequila if you don't like whiskey. I spent a month up in Jalisco, and even went on a day trip to Tequila itself, and my personal favourite was Cascahuin. I'm not sure how easy it is to get in the UK. I think I've seen it in some online retailers. Good tequila doesn't have the burn of the tequila most people are used to and is great for sipping. Don't just down it.
Just had a look online and here's the bottle I like https://www.premium-tequila.co.uk/products/cascahuin-blanco?srsltid=AfmBOoqYVGi6nD5s9XWy00PyDtQGptC04c_ogSDJK9JEJZQh859qQBSq
This is about £12 more than I paid for a bottle when I went to their office in Guadalajara, so not a bad price.
makemycockcry@reddit
The occasional ginger wine is nice to sip, I prefer the cheaper one over the Green's, which I find too strong.
Agile-Reflection440@reddit
Disaronno is sweet and almondy like marzipan!
idontlikemondays321@reddit
Amaretto and cranberry juice. It’s like drinking a Bakewell tart
GingerBeer233@reddit
Sherry, in particular Pedro Ximénez.
elouise93@reddit
A liqueur. I like white wine, and also love a liqueur... Maybe a King's Ginger, or an almond liqueur, or a cherry kirsch. They are all in my cupboard for a little late night tipple. Might have one now actually.
Jakelby@reddit
Disaronno Frangelico Coffee liqueur (plus baileys if you like) Amaretto
All lovely sipping drinks on the sweeter side.
Good brandy has a flavour not a million miles away from whisky, but smoother and a bit fruity. Especially if you can get hold of some 5* Greek Mataxa. Cheap brandy is like drinking paint thinner though, so beware.
Platten__Chris@reddit
Spiced rum is great, lots of different options. It may be trial and error finding rums that you really enjoy. My two favourites are Ron Zacapa and Diplomtico, they aren't cheap but are both great sipping rums. If you're looking at mixing I would go cheaper. Kraken, Black Magic, Duppy Share, Pirates Grog, Red Leg, Don Papa(all still good for sipping neat). Although my rum journey started with Captain morgans, Sailor Jerry's, Bacardis I now avoid and don't enjoy the taste. I would also avoid specifically flavoured rums (coconut/banana/pineapple etc.)look for rums that infuse many different spices.

May i recommend 'Triana' its a port but not a port as you would expect and perfect for Winter sipping in front of the fire. A waiter recommended it too me to go with cheese and I ordered a bottle before i left the hotel to be wating at home

Thank me later ;-)
Significant_Tower_84@reddit
Whiskey is one of those you get used to the more you drink. I started and hated it, but by the end of the night when 2/3rds of the bottle was gone, I found it quite enjoyable 😅
Seriously though, the trick is to start using mixers, then keep reducing the amount until you can enjoy it neat, a bottle of Glenfiddich 12 is a good starter one.
Southern comfort and coke is also a nice one, that's more fruity than a typical whiskey.
If you think you'll only be able to tolerate fruity drinks though, just get some vodka, and tequila, grenadine and fruit juices and learn to make a few basic cocktails.
cbaotl@reddit
Do you like coffee? Tia Maria over ice is really enjoyable and always gives me that sophisticated feel. You can also mix it with coke
iwannabeinnyc@reddit
Baileys?!
Rude-Possibility4682@reddit
I never used to like whiskey until I had a Whiskey Mac. Half Whiskey half Green Ginger Wine..bloody lovely in this weather.
Eren-Alter-Ego@reddit
Amaretto near over ice. Like drinking marzipan!
SomeHSomeE@reddit
Disaronno (or any amaretto) is a sweet almond liqueur. Available everywhere (look for the square bottles). Goes very well with coke or sprite, or on its own with loads of ice.
Plastic-Gas-9675@reddit
Quatre tres (spelt something like this) 43, with lemonade makes a very lemony drink. You can knock it back as a shot and it’s chocolatey, but be warned, it’s potent 😂
joshracer@reddit
I love lemons, I might give this a try.
hazyc0w@reddit
Drambuie, Glayva or a Passoa and lemonade
Alecmalloy@reddit
Vodka irn bru. Will simultaneously cause and cure your hangover.
Cubehagain@reddit
Whiskey old fashioned.
Reignbeaus@reddit
Malibu and coke, peach schnapps and lemonade, midori and lemonade.
XBumheadX@reddit
Frangelico. It’s a hazelnut liqueur that is great over ice.
h5n1zzp@reddit
Proper aged tequila. Not that awful cheap stuff but a nice anejo
Al-Calavicci@reddit
Southern Comfort, an easier drink to whiskey but similar.
EvilOctopoda@reddit
Maybe a cherry brandy? Nice and sweet and also warming.
petrolstationpicnic@reddit
Nice cider.
Something in a 750ml bottle, kind of looks like wine. Will get them in most dedicated wine shops if you have one near you. It’s normally quite strong, and reasonably expensive so you only have short glasses of it.
Suggested makers
Ross on Wye, Little Pomona, Wilding, Cidre Breton
