Generally, yeah. The flite control wad is considered top of the line though so maybe it controls that? But at home defense ranges I'm not worried about one flyer. And if you're using buckshot for home defense you already don't care about your neighbors, or don't have any.

Correct, much better at overpenetrating. Fast lightweight objects will go through fewer walls (not zero walls), which is why 5.56 is recommended for home defense. Heavy, slow objects (buckshot, pistol rounds) will go through relatively more walls. Birdshot won't go through many walls, but it won't change a bad guy's behavior very quickly either

5.56 is fine but I don't think it's recommended because it doesn't go through walls. It's more so that it's an effective round that can be fired accurately from a cheap and good weapon (AR-15). For any cartridge that has adequate ballistic gel penetration, it's going to go through 5+ walls so I'm not sure there's much difference between 5.56 and 00 buck in that regard.

You started tracking it during peak pricing while I started tracking prices in the fall of 2023 when Federal was supplying the market once again. Checkout my other reply here where it was $1.16 a shell last year. The last time the seller I used listed it their newsletter was September of 2023 and someone else bought i around Thanksgiving of 2023. After that supply likely dried up and the prices have remained inflated. It Federal would supply the market again the price would likely drop a lot.

One can get birdshot for 40 CPR ( case for $87 to $100+) but not 00-buckshot. The cheapest 00-buckshot on Ammoseek is Sellier & Bellet 9-pellet at 50 cents a shell or more with the shipping filter set to > 6. S&B buckshot is known to spread to a wider pattern more quickly than typically 00-buckshot and typically 00-buckshot spreads much wider faster than Flite Control or Versatite. There is no cheap alternative Flite Control or Versatite for tight pattern.

If you find some Fiocchi 9-pellet low recoil buckshot for a low price is likely is #1 buckshot and not 00-buckshot. Many sellers have mislabeled as 00-buckshot. It is such a light load that it may not cycle in all gas operated semi-auto shotgun.

I have about 200 rounds left after I sold the second cade I bought in 5/10's to coworkers for $2 a round.

I bought more boxes than I really wanted at the time back in late December of last year but I believed postings from some sellers stating prices would be increasing in early 2024. Back in December FreeShippingAmo sold 500 rounds of Federal Tactical LE 12ga 2.75" 8 Pellet 00 Buckshot LE13300 for $290 with no tax to some states and free shipping of course So that means it was $1.16 versus $1.40 here. Smaller quantities of the 8-pellet did cost more per shell.

The 8-pellet was hard to find I think for most of 2023 and prior to that too but I think it may have become more available in the fall of 2023. The above seller and maybe a few other had it at this price when they could keep it in stock for about a month or so before I bought it and it was still at about the same price into January and maybe longer.

For cheaper SHTF 00 buckshot or just fun at the range I bought some Winchester 00-buckshot for $3 a box from Palmetto State Armory. They would fluctuate the price between $3 and $3.49 daily back when I bought it. It was just $3.49 about a month ago but I see it is $5 today. I am glad I bought all I wanted back when it was on sale for $3.

Depends what you mean....some indoor ranges only allow buckshot or slugs. I've gotten some Fiocchi buck for a little over 50cpr for that purpose.

If the range is indiscriminate, these guys have free shipping over $150, and Federal target loads at 33cpr

Not really such a thing as "cheap" buckshot, The Fiocchi Defense Dynamics are hard to find, if you can find them then those, S&B not really recommended since I don't think it even has a proper wad, Winchester Super X is on PSA for 0.60 CPR, but it patterns pretty bad. If you can find the Fiocchi then that's what you want, otherwise Winchester.

I would add that the cheap 9-pellet Fiocchi that many listed a 00-buckshot is actually #1 buckshot. I bought some from MidwayUSA when they had it for very low price knowing what it was. I won't properly cycle some gas piston semi-auto shotguns.

There is a YouTube video where someone measured the pellets. I also confirm via weighing the shells that they were too light to be 00-buckshot.

See my other reply. 8-pellet was gone for a long time. I don't know how long other than likely many months or well over a year. People asked back in 2023 when it would come back and it did but not until probably last quarter of 2023. I bought in late December. It was available available for $290 a for 500 rounds on 2/20/2023. They had it for $325 on 9/10/2024. It will be back again. Looking at the high prices of 9-pellet at Ammoseek today the 9-pellet must be in very short supply. It should return. I'd recommend saving up for it so you buy enough to last you through the next shortage.
