I was allowed one cup a day in sixth grade and I had to choose if I wanted it in the morning or after school. I think it was more about the price than the caffeine though. I always chose to have it after school.
LMAO my boomer dad wrote General Foods a complaint letter when they stopped making the Orange Cappucino, he drank it for literal decades. Yes, he actually hand wrote a letter, put it in an envelope, put a stamp on it and put it in a mailbox.
Definitely went through a phase with these. I can't remember off the top of my head if they are still around. Definitely a family favorite at the time, but I am thinking we transitioned with a coffee maker and then it was a repeat of flavored coffee, now it was found in the dairy section. Somehow as time went on, it just got easier to go to Starbucks, which honestly makes no sense.
Crack, black tar heroin, drinking the blood of babies, conjuring Satan, using nuclear weapons, listening Abba albums, becoming a planet eating galactic menace. It all started with International Coffees.
Fun fact: Stiller and Meara did commercials for Blue Nun. Fun fact 2: when I got my first college apartment in 1988 my parents gave me a bottle of Blue Nun as a house warming gift.
They're right up there with the Dick Orkin "Radio Ranch" material, don't know if you have those in your area, but here in Chicago it's been First American Bank ads with "Dickie and Grandma" for decades
There really are "Blue Nuns" - the Daughters of St. Paul, an order specializing in producing and distributing religious media. Their habits are blue jumpers with white blouses, and short blue veils.
I hounded my mom to buy the Suisse Mocha coffee so that I too could drink that delicious sophisticated coffee. I hated it. I was so disappointed. Still choked down that full first cup, just because I had made such a fuss about getting it.
This is exactly my story.😂 Begged my mom for over a year during grocery store trips. She finally bought it, and I thought it tasted disgusting. I don't remember the flavor, though.
It’s more than just sweet. It tastes like coffee and chocolate, and it’s good. I started buying Suisse Mocha again last year, out of nostalgia at first, but then because I liked it.
Your description is spot on and exactly why I didn't like it. I hated coffee as a kid.(Which makes it weird that I was so hellbent on trying an "international coffee" drink, but I digress.) I think I picked out something like the french vanilla flavor, which sounded the least coffee-like to me. I think from seeing it in commercials, I thought it would be like "sophisticated" hot chocolate with a vanilla flavor. I think I actually just watched too much Dallas & Dynasty as a young kid.😂
My mom used to drink the Suisse Mocha when I was a kid, and I tried it before my coffee taste buds developed.
It was not good.
Then I bought some as a grown-up for the nostalgia, and it wasn't bad. It's also good if you mix it into brewed coffee.
Well, I don't think it helps that I was one of those weirdo kids that would eat powdered stuff right out of the container. Coffee-mate, these coffees, hot chocolate, nesquik
Wow, you’re barely keeping a lid on your lofty food judgements there.
Not that it matters, but I also appreciate small-batch roasted Chemex pour-over coffee, high-end Pinot, fiddlehead ferns, and any other upscale, fine-dining things you want to judge people’s palates by.
I don't require your fine dining street cred. And I don't need to apologize for thinking that General Foods International Coffee products are absolute shit in a can that's all marketing and little else (and also not made for me). But hey, if you like it then knock yourself out. I guess someone has to buy it.
PS: You don't need to care what strangers think about your taste.
The other night I was pretty down in the dumps. I made a dinner of pizza bagel bites and hot tamale cinnamons for dessert and realized afterwards how I was medicated
When I was a toddler, my parents would occasionally have my grandmother watch me. I'd sit in her lap and she'd give me that coffee filled with sugar. Then she'd hand me back to my parents
My mom used to secretly buy the international coffees and hide them way back in a cupboard and drink one a day when my father wasn’t around because he was a controlling AH who didn’t like coffee. Lol can’t believe she’s still with that guy.
I used to keep a bottle of Grey Poupon in the glove box of my 80 Chevette, just in case some smart ass asked for some at a red light. Sadly, the day never came and it started to get moldy.
My buddy In high school had the orange rally ‘Vette. He removed the back seat so it was like a flatbed and wired two massive home stereo speakers to his car stereo. We smoke up and ride around downtown Fairfax City with The Scorpions blaring at top volume at night. Good times.
Ha I came here for this! This DID happen to me once (back in the day) and I've never forgiven myself for not having a jar of grey poupon in the car. I've kept one in my glove box and a new-in-package pair of white cotton gloves ready to go ever since then.
The odds of this happening again are basically zero. But it makes me happy
In high school I was driving with my girlfriends and one of them hopped out of the car at the light and ran up to a limo and asked the driver for Grey Poupon. He rolled the window back up on her. She proceeded to ask a few more cars with no luck. Possibly yours was one of them?
It could have been so fucking glorious! It was a car full of maybe teen or college age guys, and me not much older than that at the time. "But of course!" The gloves I got later like maybe 20 years ago. Never give up on your dreams
Remember when the International Coffees came in a decorative tin with images of the country it was “inspired” by? And you know you had to have them all!
I was bougie AF even when I was a little kid. Problem was I grew up poor, or at least working class. So anything “fancy” was so fascinating to me. That Viennetta cake was like some sort of dream of mine. Not sure why, it just looked so sophisticated. Finally tried one when I was a semi adult with my own income. It wasn’t all that.
On a related note, our family always got the Swiss Colony catalog and it had the same effect on me. Little fancy desserts delivered to your door?! You must be royalty or something. BTW, it’s still a thing!
It apparently made a brief comeback in the last few years, then disappeared again. Aldi has a similar item in their ice cream case. I don’t really have nostalgia for the original but bought it for secondhand nostalgia that pops up online. The crispy chocolate was good.
I learned about mochas in the 80s, and don't remember where from, but it hooked me. To me, that chocolate-coffee blend was perfect. I went to college and my friends thought I was weird as hell getting half cocoa, half coffee in my cup and thought it sounded gross. Then they tried it, and our little group became mocha fans.
I was so, so, so pleased when mocha finally caught on in the '90s. I'm always amazed how many people don't realize that's what mocha is--coffee and cocoa!
RIght? Coffee + chocolate FTW! Hook me up! Starbucks was my dealer.
I worked at a fast food joint in HS where we could drink as much soda/coffee we wanted. While making a pot of coffee, I noticed the neglected hot cocoa packets and had a light bulb moment. . . hey you got cocoa in my coffee. lol
I recenly started making them again. I've been priced out of coffee shop mochas for many years and sometimes I'm too lazy/busy to bust out the esprsso machine when I crave a mochie.
Do you remember the "Levelour Blinds" and Hallmark commercials? Had 8 year old me flipping over greeting cards and looking at blinds to see if they were designer.
Throw grape nuts in there. They had me thinking it was the greatest thing ever, bugging my parents endlessly to get it for me. Boy was I in for a surprise when I finally got it
Staring out the window at nothing
Smiling at a friend when they said something funny
Sipping at just the right moment to avoid looking at my coworker revealing to everyone that he can't make babies.
My ex and I rolled up to a limo at a stop light and asked the driver if he had any Grey Poupon. Bro whipped out a jar of GP with the biggest grin on his face. Well done, sir.
Vienneta is garbage tier ice cream. The recent wave of nostalgia surrounding this gross product is confusing, there are and were so many better options. Aesthetically pleasing yeah but taste wise it was gross.
So when my kids were much younger, we would have a Viennetta for breakfast every Christmas morning. It was the best! Now that they’re older, I’ve learned how to make them myself not nearly as fancy, but the memories are still there.
We cut class, went to McDonalds, got take-out happy meals, ate them in the middle of the woods. Cheeseburgers, fries, a drink, cookies, a toy, and a box full of mazes and word games for each one of us. Made it back to school by the end of 8th period. If that's not classy, then I don't want to be.
Memory unlocked. Rax Roast Beef had Grey Poupon in squeeze containers. Junior-high me thought Rax AND Grey Poupon were the coolest things ever. Arby’s just cannot compare.
I was adding Dijon mustard to a sandwich a couple of weeks ago. Store brand which made me think about how nowadays Dijon mustard isn’t so fancy anymore.
It IS. I was never a mustard fan back then, but it is truly delicious. Just used some for a salad dressing and nothing else compares. This product is not a fluke.
That International Coffee stuff... when I first started drinking coffee I was 14 and it was during church Coffee Hour. Would get myself a styrofoam cup of regular joe and dump a spoonful of each flavor in there. It was abomination and I loved it.
I remember seeing ads for Dove Ice Cream Bars and thought that they'd invented some new type if shit that was essentially going to make come in my x wing fighter pilot underoos.....but it was just ice cream on a stick. Motherfuckers knew how to SELL some shit back then
"Fancy" desserts did used to be a little rarer back then, these days the stores sell breakfast cookies and coffee shops sell drinks that are essentially milkshakes but hot.
Omg I loved that Swiss Mocha shit! I definitely used 3 times the recommended amount though in order to make it taste like anything. Do they still sell that? I might need some for nostalgia purposes.
I just bought some Cafe Vienna today 😀😀 the taste was exactly as I remembered it.
Made my Maxwell house now, different label too. Dark blue cans now. Lol. So funny.
I thought about Viennetta just the other day. It was tasty.
I appreciate the reminder about General Foods International Coffees. I tried at least one of them back in the day.
I got my license to drive in the very early 90s. It was not uncommon at that time to put the window down and ask the driver in the next lane for some Grey Poupon.
I miss Vienita (please forgive my poor spelling). I only had it once. Nobody else in the family liked it and by the time I was able to buy it myself it was no more.
I still find it odd when someone says, “want some coffee?” and then proceeds to make some instant coffee. They seem to be really eager when they say it too. Maybe I want to see them go through the process of really making it because it is such a nice gesture so making the instant stuff seems like a cop out. We have Keurigs now so it is still not the same as it was.
Never had the International Coffees but I certainly did think they were high class. As for Viennetta, I remember finally having it when I was in my late teens/early 20s and thought "This is it? It's just ice cream."
OMG, I’d completely forgotten about Suisse Mocha until this moment. Teenage me used to mix that stuff at about 5x strength. I wonder if you can get it on Amazon…
Haha these were geared toward our Boomer parents though, right? Bc as a teen when these were around, my peers and I were subsisting on shitty wine coolers, Slim Jims, Slurpees, and Taco Bell.
Don't forget Stella D'oro Breakfast Treats. And Martini and Rossi Aste Spumante (and if you haven't done so already, check out Patton Oswalt's routines about both of these on YouTube).
I do love grey poupon, it’s smooth, a little spicy, ideal on a ham n Swiss sammy. Vianetta was also so chic and very tasty. I tried to be sophisticated and like the swisse mocha, but that one just tasted fakey. I require really good coffee with my Vianetta.
Fancy? This was fancy back in the day!
Cavendish & Harvey hard candy. My mom killed for the cherry ones, she maybe would give me one if she has I the mood.
I remember skipping school back in 90, and sitting at a red light next to a Rolls in a VERY affluent area (West U) of Houston. My friend hanged half way out of my Geo Metro, and said “Pardon Me…Have You Any Grey Poupon (or whatever the saying was)” , obviously the person rolled their eyes and ignored her. She leaned further out the window, and with extended arms and middle fingers proudly proclaimed “Well Fuck You Then!”
I used to drink a lot of that instant coffee at work because it was always on special somewhere. I liked it with milk from tetra pack. Years later I switched to tea and I'm still with it.
Viennetta was lovely, vanilla the best although the mint was ok occasionally for a change. Let itself down in the strawberry one though.
Better by far was mint Ice Magic.
Pour the chocolate sauce onto your ice cream, wait a minute or two and voila - delicious hard chocolate topping to crack through with your spoon.
Welfare kid here, so we had hot dogs made from lips and assholes, and the Kroger generic version of Kraft Dinner. On a good night, we;d get slices of the lip-and-asshole hot dogs mixed into our fake Kraft Dinner.

No, not spoiled, we just had "lowered expectations", try to read that without singing it?!
WeHoMuadhib@reddit
I was bougie AF even when I was a little kid. Problem was I grew up poor, or at least working class. So anything “fancy” was so fascinating to me. That Viennetta cake was like some sort of dream of mine. Not sure why, it just looked so sophisticated. Finally tried one when I was a semi adult with my own income. It wasn’t all that.
On a related note, our family always got the Swiss Colony catalog and it had the same effect on me. Little fancy desserts delivered to your door?! You must be royalty or something. BTW, it’s still a thing!

Viennetta was too fancy for us. I had it maybe three times in my life, at some neighbours.
SealedRoute@reddit
It apparently made a brief comeback in the last few years, then disappeared again. Aldi has a similar item in their ice cream case. I don’t really have nostalgia for the original but bought it for secondhand nostalgia that pops up online. The crispy chocolate was good.
Eisenkopf69@reddit
It's still rocking in Germany.

Not me. Ghetto mochas were my thing: coffee & hot cocoa mix.
IMakeStuffUppp@reddit
Bro that’s what I get dunkachino
Catlore@reddit
I learned about mochas in the 80s, and don't remember where from, but it hooked me. To me, that chocolate-coffee blend was perfect. I went to college and my friends thought I was weird as hell getting half cocoa, half coffee in my cup and thought it sounded gross. Then they tried it, and our little group became mocha fans.
I was so, so, so pleased when mocha finally caught on in the '90s. I'm always amazed how many people don't realize that's what mocha is--coffee and cocoa!
AnitaPeaDance@reddit
RIght? Coffee + chocolate FTW! Hook me up! Starbucks was my dealer.
I worked at a fast food joint in HS where we could drink as much soda/coffee we wanted. While making a pot of coffee, I noticed the neglected hot cocoa packets and had a light bulb moment. . . hey you got cocoa in my coffee. lol
ohkatiedear@reddit
I had two of these today lol
AnitaPeaDance@reddit
I recenly started making them again. I've been priced out of coffee shop mochas for many years and sometimes I'm too lazy/busy to bust out the esprsso machine when I crave a mochie.
