What's a good place/site to buy second hand phones from in the UK?

My phone broke and I need a new one. I had a look at CEX but would love to hear about other options before committing. Which sites have you trusted in the past? Is there anything I should look out for when buying?

Just bought an iPhone 14 Pro for £400 from eBay. It was from a reseller instead to an individual buyer. Excellent condition. No regrets.

damn really? reckon ill be able to snag a 15 pro for about 500?

Not a bad deal. Will look for prev gen pros in the future when I need a new phone thanks

Music Magpie.

I got a phone and laptop from BackMarket last year and both transactions were fine- items very well described and good price.

They get terrible reviews, I personally wouldn't use them but I'm pleased you weren't one of the individual ones.

Yeah don't go to Back Market, a work colleague had a fucking nightmare getting a phone from them last year. Took her fucking ages to get her money back as well.

thank you for your recommendation, music magpie does look good

You can also get returns on Amazon a little bit cheaper. Quite often people will open them and find they don't like the colour or the size of the handset return them.
I'm looking at getting the Pixel 9 Pro for £750 instead of £899.

I use backmarket in the US, have done for years and it's been a faultless experience.
Don't know if it's the same company in the UK though?

Why would you buy a phone from CEX? Their phones are hugely over priced.
glasgowgeg@reddit
Because a 5 year warranty on a pre-owned device is pretty good.
iliketitsandasss@reddit
That's really going to convince the dumb assess to over pay for an already out of date phone.
Do you actually think CEX is going to pay out? They will wriggle out of everything.
glasgowgeg@reddit
Some people upgrade their phones every year, and sell those old phones. Plenty of new devices at CEX.

that's why I'm asking here haha! It did seem that compared to buying new on Amazon I wasn't going to save much but anything helps in this economy

Xiaomi phones are good value and specs.
Xiaomi Redmi note 13 £129
Xiaomi Redmi note pro £244
Both on amazon.

Giffgaff or amazon refurb.

Wear a balacava and snatch them off unanware people /S
In all seriousness, phone repair shops have a lot of second hand phones and so does ebay and Amazon.

5 year warranty on CEX tech stuff now. Ok it's got a few concessions to the warranty, but it twisted my arm to pick up a replacement for my P30 pro.

For Apple devices try https://mresell.co.uk
I sold them one of my previous iPhones. I thought it was in excellent nick — everything worked, no scratches etc.
They noticed very slight yellowing around the edge of the screen that I genuinely wasn’t aware of, until they dropped the price they offered me. (I had taken video and photos before sending my phone to them.) I checked my video, and the slight yellowing was there. I’d trust them to spot any defects!
pothelswaite@reddit
CEX offers a 2 year warranty that I have used twice on items that were 18months old. So for me, they win due to that.
ScallionOk6420@reddit
Back Market.
Only used them once for a phone, but it all went well.
Langeveldt@reddit
Backmarket. I buy all my electrics from them
Fractalien@reddit
Why not buy a cheap new one? The Xiaomi Redmi/Poco sub brands are very good, reliable and cheap
Timely_Egg_6827@reddit
If just want cheap rather than second hand, Tesco Tech on Ebay were good. Also had refurb from Amazon - third party but they cover customer service.
glasgowgeg@reddit
CEX do a 5 year warranty on tech now, I've only ever bought pre-owned from them in the past, they're pretty good.
Rocky-bar@reddit
Ebay if you choose carefully.
VisualApprehensive95@reddit
EBay, excellent buyer protection

I’ve bought a few refurbs though giffgaff before and been very happy with them all. I’m not sure if you need to be with them as a provider but they’re worth a look!
No-Socks3282@reddit (OP)
i already have sim cards so I'm okay without a provider and would prefer to buy outright instead of paying monthly as long as it's in my budget
LittleMissAbigail@reddit
You can do both of those things with giffgaff refurbs - I bought all of them outright and I’ve checked and it looks like you can buy the phone without needing to already be a member!

Backmarket worked well for me!
