Any other American trans/queer folks going to Uruguay?

Welp, I just booked a one-way ticket to Montevideo. Anybody else heading down to Uruguay? It'd be nice to start connecting with other trans/queer folks 😊
StickyPawMelynx@reddit
looking into possible immigration there (not from the US tho), and this thread does not give me hope: https://www.reddit.com/r/Burises/comments/1o2wmcv/is_it_worth_studying_in_uruguay/
especially the "Stop asking in chat gpt what's the most gay friendly country" comment, and everyone else shitting on OP
Sweetfemdomtreat@reddit
hey not sure if this is still going but I’m here in Montevideo and looking for trans friends! Feel free to message me!
exceptionaltwice@reddit
Hi there! genderqueer and arrived a few weeks ago, would love to hang! message me (my account is new so it doesn't let me initiate dms)
Responsible_Law_5583@reddit
would love a DM OP!
exceptionaltwice@reddit
are you still here? we just arrived.

This is my dream! If anyone out there can find a way to connect me with job and housing opportunities (or a way to access that), I’d be so grateful!
CharlesPageant@reddit
Search mercadolibre uruguay for housing, and busco jobs or https://trabajo.gallito.com.uy/
exceptionaltwice@reddit
unforunately mercado libre is impossible to use unless you have a Uruguayan ID. Here on a nomad visa to start off my process and they won't even accept that number.
exceptionaltwice@reddit
there are some short-term furnished apartments available through real estate agencies.
ComicRelief66@reddit
trans person born and raised in Uruguay, you’re very welcome here !!
Adventurous_Line839@reddit
Omg! Do you mind if I DM you, please? Hehe. I want to connect with someone who lives there, and/or do you know of any good active LGBT groups on FB I could possibly join? Thank you!
exceptionaltwice@reddit
Would be grateful to hear about resources for connecting with queer community. My partner and I arrived a few weeks ago.
VictoriIsMine@reddit
I am looking into moving there as well and would love to connect to learn more about getting involved with community there. Can I message you as well?
aidenlearns@reddit
I'm in the same boat. Do you mind if I DM you also?
Organic-Farmer-5262@reddit (OP)
May I message you?
BromiosDC@reddit
My husband and I just moved to Montevideo from the US. We are looking for friends. Currently in an Airbnb until May and looking for an apartment. Any help with a real estate agent would be appreciated
exceptionaltwice@reddit
Hi! Are you still here? My partner and i just arrived a few weeks ago from the US and are also eager to make friends.
CharlesPageant@reddit
Search mercadolibre libre uruguay, like amazon, but also buy rent houses and cars
Organic-Farmer-5262@reddit (OP)
Feel free to DM me and I’d be happy to chat 😊Â

Question for anyone who has recently taken advantage of the Digital Nomad Permit: I know that once approved you have to pay the fee within 24 hours but it can only be done from a Uruguayan bank account or at a store where you pay bills. Is it possible to open a bank account while still on a tourist visa so that if the approval arrives and you are out of the country you can pay online within the 24 hours?
exceptionaltwice@reddit
you can pay at locations where folks pay bills, there's a list of companies that will be provided. very easy, just make sure you print the UPC like image that you use to pay, they won't accept scanning it on your phone. did it with abitab 2 weeks ago.
Valuable_Court9950@reddit
If you’re here on a tourist visa, it’s easy enough to go in to one of those stores to pay for it. Much easier than opening a bank account.

I’m moving in first week of June 2026 and will be visiting May 3rd until 9th to find my place either in Punte de Este, or Moldonado.
Expert_Club_9005@reddit
Hi! My questions are different than most. I'm interested in joining a regenerative farming community and living as simply as possible! Any information regarding that? Also, my understanding is that it's best to know some Spanish, so I'd have to learn fast through an app or something! I also have a dog and wonder if anyone knows current logistics regarding bringing her. Thanks for any help!
Soft_Obligation1744@reddit
Keep me posted! Just now starting the process

Looking to move to Uruguay. Queer cis woman, with a Transgender Teenager and an ex-wife/coparent. Looking to meet others with transkids.
_leave_it_to_leah_@reddit
I wish you all the best wherever you end up.
I hope people who make it leave feedback eventually. I'm curious. I've been trying to get out all year. Maybe early 2026. Uruguay is on the short list.

Organic-Farmer-5262@reddit (OP)
$2500/month would definitely work… Even with eating out most/all meals. Perhaps you won’t have much room to save but I think you could live pretty well on $2500/month here.Â
wj3131@reddit
Average rent for a one bedroom?
wj3131@reddit
Thanks for the info. Are you in Montevideo?
Organic-Farmer-5262@reddit (OP)
I am, yes 😊 I’ve lived in a lot of major US cities and it’s quite comparable to them in many ways (of course very different too).
Responsible_Law_5583@reddit
did you housing when you arrived? did the same thing
Responsible_Law_5583@reddit
just moved too to pocitos

Been looking into Uruguay as a place for my trans kids. Let me know how it goes!
lv_butterfly@reddit
Same! Both of my kids are trans. My oldest gets harassed here in the US constantly since Trump has become president. All the bigots have gotten more outspoken. Does anyone here know specifically how supportive Uruguay is for trans minors?
nousewindows@reddit
So you got more than one trans child? What a coincidence...
Fit-Present-5698@reddit
It's actually not that uncommon. Same with having gay children
Franknows@reddit
Older single trans guy here, looking into possibly retiring there. However, I don't know any Spanish (I took French in school), and Latin America has never been a draw for me, but I've been exploring my options, and Uruguay does sound great. Having other trans/queer folks to connect with there would certainly make it more likely option for me.
zuliah@reddit
Hii I have an acquaintance moving there same situation, can someone DM me?
Organic-Farmer-5262@reddit (OP)
DM’ing you now 😊Â
Strange_Atoms@reddit
How's it going in Uruguay? I am considering it as an option. Looking into Maldonado. How's cost of living and accessibility to medical treatment (hormones)? Which city / town did you wind up in. Feel free to shoot me a message.
Good luck to you!
Fit-Present-5698@reddit
We are considering as well
SpaceKadet1592@reddit
I’m looking into to it! Currently under income requirements for more than a short stay so I might stay in chile for a bit first. Possibly travel between to see which I like more
tygerpg@reddit
Hello friends! \^_\^ My family and I are also suddenly excited at the idea of moving to Uruguay! I'd love to connect with like minded people and maybe we can share information and resources to help each other! Feel free to direct message me if you are nervous posting publicly, i am also a little nervous about the whole situation, you know?
CanaryHeart@reddit
I’d love to connect!
Organic-Farmer-5262@reddit (OP)
Just messaged you!
CanaryHeart@reddit
My family is seriously looking into it.
Top-Half7224@reddit
Why Uruguay out of curiosity? Are they particularly LGTBQ friendly?
AssertRage@reddit
Yes, it's the most LGBT friendly of Latin America:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGBTQ_rights_in_Uruguay
Top-Half7224@reddit
That's a nice thing to hear after such a week. Good luck OP.
Organic-Farmer-5262@reddit (OP)
Thanks 😊Â
infinitestars7337@reddit
Me and my partner have this as an option as well! Happy to keep in touch!
Organic-Farmer-5262@reddit (OP)
Just messaged you!
sintktk@reddit
Be prepared to be denied entry into the country without a return ticket home or elsewhere.
Organic-Farmer-5262@reddit (OP)
Do you know this for Uruguay, specifically, or just general advice?
UncleMissoula@reddit
Congrats on the decision! I’m only an ally, but I think URU would be good place for many reasons.
