Proof that you can phone it in with a Lambo badge and still sell every vehicle you make. The Purosangue has some serious effort put into making it uniquely Ferrari, the Urus much less so.
That said, good. The "more SUV sales = we don't go bankrupt and keep selling sports cars" approach worked well for Porsche.
WanderingToast@reddit
Ferrari has the worst names. Pure Blood??
BetterThanAFoon@reddit
Exotic car markets in general just don't make sense. The benefit of the Urus over it's Audi counterpart is when you service it you aren't at a Audi dealership sitting next to the peasant with an optionless A3 because that badge means you get it serviced elsewhere and pay waaaaay more for that service.
Recoil42@reddit
Pretty much every Urus review I've seen has been extremely complimentary. They have street presence, they handle well, they're built well. There's simply no meat to the suggestion the Urus is 'phoned' in.
mikolv2@reddit
Isn't it a rebadged RSQ8? They share a lot of the internals... with a car that costs half as much?
Recoil42@reddit
The RAV4 shares a lot of internals with the Lexus RX. They aren't rebadges of one another.
Platforms... exist.
mikolv2@reddit
what percentage? RSQ8 and Urus share the same platform, suspension, engine, gearbox, breaks (if I recall correctly), and electronics. Differences are purely visual + a different tune on the ECU.
Recoil42@reddit
Hold on, let me get binder out from last teardown I did of a Lamborghini Urus
mikolv2@reddit
Do you not see the difference between sharing "a lot of internals" and virtually every internal component?
Tbro100@reddit
That's kinda like saying the Audi R8 is just a rebadged Gallardo/Huracan. Even though they share a engine and platform they are two very different cars.
mikolv2@reddit
No, it's not like that. Audi R8 and Huracan share a lot of components and are different cars despite their similarities. RSQ8 and Urus share basically every internal component. When differences are purely visual, i call that a rebadge. If R8 and Huracan had exact same internal and drove exactly the same, id say the same
Tbro100@reddit
Except the RSQ8 and Urus don't drive exactly the same. Same platform and engine yet the Urus has better performance, as well as a completely different interior and exterior.
A rebadged would be a GR86 and BRZ or a Tonale and a Hornet, this is just platform sharing.
BWFTW@reddit
Idk the urus is pretty phoned in to me too. They basically took an rsq8, flash tuned the motor, changed the interior and exterior, changed the suspension settings, and called it a day. Which is fine, it's a totally good vehicle. But it's not like a purosangue which is a truly bespoke and special performance suv. But it's also like half the price of a pursoangue, so that makes sense haha. The urus is a totally fine car, but it's just not very special to a lot of people.
Tbro100@reddit
That's a lot of changes lol. I wouldn't mind the purosangue if Ferrari did sue a charity to get it's name lmao.
mikolv2@reddit
Performance difference is form a tune only and resulting whopping 0.1 second faster 0-60 time. They share much more than platform and engine, they also share the same suspension, breaks, subframes, gearbox and all electronic components. I'd include interior and exterior under "purely visual differences"
Tbro100@reddit
+67hp, +68 lb-ft toque, 200lbs lighter, enhanced aero. SE variant has an exclusive hybrid power train that adds 199hp.
Visuals are 50% minimum of what defines a car, and easily majority of what defines a car to the avg consumer. No one would be be able to tell the two were similar if they weren't being torn down to look into.
mikolv2@reddit
That checks out because those visual differences make up half of the price of the Urus
Tbro100@reddit
Gasp! An exotic luxury SUV sold in limited quantities from a supercar manufacturer isn't a financially sound deal?
Shocker.
mikolv2@reddit
Do you have one or something?
Tbro100@reddit
Not my cup of tea. Why, looking for one second hand?
mikolv2@reddit
No, I think they're absolutely hideous. RSQ8 in my opinion is a 10x better looking
Tbro100@reddit
Kinda a angry cat vs sharp pug situation, neutral to both.
Turbosurge@reddit
No one who's buying these cars cares what percentage of its parts came from an Audi. As long as it's, fast, comfortable, and flashy, Lambo SUV buyers will be happy.
BWFTW@reddit
The urus and rsq8 are both on the same platform. The cayenne is too, along with the atlas and toureg. But the rsq8 and urus also share a huge amount of core parts AND are on the same platform.
rockercaster@reddit
Your point does not stand when comparing a $300,000 vehicle that’s an upbadged $90K vehicle and not just the same “platform” but literally the same vehicle with a different body and interior panels.
FWD_to_twin_turbo@reddit
Exactly! The RX is a subjectively worse vehicle, i'd hate people thinking the rav4 was THAT bad of a deal.
Viend@reddit
Would you also say the Huracan is a rebadged R8? I found out from a friend who bought one that it’s common knowledge in the forums to buy R8 parts to reduce repair costs.
BWFTW@reddit
I would say the r8 is a rebadged hurucan. The car was built to be a Lamborghini first, then given to Audi to help spread out the costs. So the difference is being built as a lambo first or being built as an Audi first.
mikolv2@reddit
They share a lot of parts, again but not as much as RSQ8 and Urus. From what I heard the R8 drives a good bit different due to the suspension setup.
Yogi_dat_Bear@reddit
Urus, RSQ8, Bentaga, Touraeg basically the same car. Think Tahoe, Escalade, Yukon
julienjj@reddit
The URUS is a Cayenne coupe. The Cayenne turbo coupe drive the design of the platform (including the engine), then audi makes a derivative cheaper version, while lambo add crazy body panels and interior and jack up the price.
sioux612@reddit
Ever been in a q8/sq8/rsq8?
It's one of the best long range vehicles out there, only besten by the cayenne turbo in the "comfort at 120mph+" range
If I had to choose a platform to base my SUV on it'd be the one shared with the q8/cayenne
mikolv2@reddit
Yes and I love the car. I have nothing but praise for the RSQ8. My criticism is for the Urus which is an RSQ8 with a body kit for double the price, it has nothing to justify that price.
Vccowan@reddit
It’s the perfect blend between a super car and a tractor.
Bderken@reddit
This unfortunately is the mainstream Lamborghini. There are so many people out there buying this car who have never been in a Lamborghini otherwise.
AmNoSuperSand52@reddit
Kinda weird though that for so many people, their one and only Lamborghini ownership experience is an Audi Q-series, which is also just a VW Atlas
wenger828@reddit
FWI, the Audi r8 and Huracan both feel and drive differently. I prefer the R8
SvanirePerish@reddit
My R8 doesn't feel drastically different than an EVO to be honest.. the RWD Huracan will behave differently of course. I definitely prefer the R8 though, especially the interior. I own a perf R8 though which is on coilovers from factory not the base model air.
wenger828@reddit
Funny you mention. The RWD Huracan is the only one I’ve driven, and it felt vastly different than the R8. The R8 had magnetic shocks
SvanirePerish@reddit
Yeah mine doesn't have the mag ride that's the base model, mine is straight harsh coilover and it's AWD so it performs pretty similar to the Huracans ive been in.
Recoil42@reddit
The Urus isn't anymore a 'rebadged' Cayenne than the Lexus RX is a 'rebadged' RAV4, which is to say it isn't. Same platform — completely different body work, interior, engine, and so on and so forth. They share some bits and pieces, but they aren't the same car.
The Audi RSQ8 does get the same engine as the Urus however, afaik.
skankhunt1983@reddit
Isn't it same as the RSQ7?
Recoil42@reddit
Same engine, same platform, different vehicle.
Not a rebadge, and they aren't even built in the same factory.
Absurdity_Everywhere@reddit
I think you’re using an extremely narrow definition of ‘rebadge’. For most people, sharing the same engine and platform is enough. Of course there are going to be different body panels and interior bits, but that’s just superficial. Is it meaningfully different in a way that couldn’t have just been a different trim level of the RSQ8?
bryanisbored@reddit
most people dont know cars or what would be considered a rebadge.
jg4242@reddit
I think of a rebadge as something like a Fiat Spider 124, which is a Miata with a different engine and some different body panels. Or a Toyota Yaris iA, which is literally a Mazda2 with a Toyota badge on it.
According_Flow_6218@reddit
A shared platform can still produce substantially different vehicles. The Porsche Macan and Audi Q5 were built on the same platform, but the changes Porsche made to the suspension produced a completely different driving experience. The Q5 drives like a mid-sized premium SUV. The Macan, even with the base Audi 4-cyl, defies physics.
Pahlevun@reddit
Lmfao what? Definitely not my experience. Drives like a very good crossover, nothing more. Defies physics? Huh?
According_Flow_6218@reddit
Did you not have PASM?
Daneth@reddit
I think sharing the same engine/transmission and platform "might" be enough in certain situations. But if it's just "platform" how much of a difference does that make when the engine, transmission, suspension and interior/exterior are different? I guess maybe both cars would be similar overall dimensions...but that's not exactly narrowing it down much.
AdministrationIcy368@reddit
But the fit and finish of a car matters. Driving dynamics matter.
Go drive a Q5 and a Macan and tell me they are the same….
willpc14@reddit
I struggle to see how the driving dynamics could be all that different between two cars that have the same engine, transmission, and platform (if not the literal unibody chassis underneath).
AdministrationIcy368@reddit
That’s why I said you should go drive it. Just because a car shares a platform doesn’t mean they drive the same. The engines can be tuned differently. The transmission can be tuned diff for shifts and responsiveness. The suspension can feel diff. The fit and finish of the cabin, software and other things can feel diff. The exterior styling is diff. The dealership experience and prestige is diff.
This is a similar argument Windows users make when they compare specs against the MacBook. “Same intel cpu, same ram”. That doesnt mean anything, the user experience is different.
Drenlin@reddit
I don't think most people understand what it means for cars to share a "platform". This can be as simple as sharing a firewall layout.
grayson4810@reddit
Then is the new m2 just a rebadged m4? I think you’re using much too broad a definition of “rebadge” honestly, considering many new cars are built modularly nowadays
DameOClock@reddit
Yes, I used to work at an Audi dealer in a small city that also serviced Lamborghinis and there are many difference outside of just the badges. The interior on its own feels like a different car.
Recoil42@reddit
Just a totally unserious argument. No one's stumbling around here confused as to whether the Ford Maverick and Lincoln Nautilus are rebadges of one another despite the two being based on the same C2 platform and having the same 2.0L EcoBoost I4 engine.
The "Urus is Audi" joke is fun for a minute and has an ounce of truth to it, but they're just pretty close platform-mates with a shared engine option. Interiors, exteriors, frame shape, manufacturing sites, equipped trim — are all different.
mintz41@reddit
Sharing an engine and platform does not make a car a rebadge lol. The Suzuki Across is an example of an actual rebadge
quantum-quetzal@reddit
There's also the Toyota Cavalier and Chevy Forester for some amusing ones.
lifestepvan@reddit
Then these people don't know shit about cars, sorry.
That logic may have held true for 70s US cars when a "platform" was pretty much a rolling chassis with varying bodywork and interior bolted on.
Would you call a Volkswagen Atlas a rebadged Audi TT? They share a platform and an engine.
sweeney669@reddit
That’s not what a rebadge is at all. A rebadge is like the GR86 and Subaru BRZ. This is completely different.
spongebob_meth@reddit
Different factories build the same vehicles all the time.
Drzhivago138@reddit
Case in point, the Crosstrek right after yours was built both in Japan and Lafayette.
SvanirePerish@reddit
The SQ8 is the same car as the RSQ8 downtuned.
Pahlevun@reddit
Who gives a fuck which factory they're built in? That's not what makes a car different.
The RSQ8 is a sister car to the Urus, you're just obsessed with the expression "rebadge" which has apparently outraged you.
The RSQ8 is also hilariously faster than the Urus in the Nurburgring.
Elf-kingko95@reddit
As far as mechanical components are concerned, I’m willing to bet you can swap parts from one another no problem. RSQ8 and urus are different cars in the same sense as the Gr Supra and z4 are.
TS040@reddit
id say theyre also different in the sense that the RSQ8 is ICE only but the Urus can only be bought as a PHEV now
Jlx_27@reddit
There was never an RSQ7.
skankhunt1983@reddit
Edited
Pahlevun@reddit
NX is a rebadged RAV4, RX is a rebadged Highlander, but yes. And it isn't the same car, but actually up until the very most recent generations, the RX and Highlander DID have the exact same powertrain options, same with the Lexus ES and Toyota Camry/Avalon.
It isn't "some bits and pieces", it is a platform and fundamental components that make up for a very vast part of a car.
Drzhivago138@reddit
I think that's the point they're making: all those vehicles are on the TNGA-K platform, but that doesn't mean they're the same vehicle.
Pahlevun@reddit
I get that, the thing is though, that if you have driven those TNGA-K platform vehicles, you'll notice that their road manners are extremely similar. If you don't believe me, drive an ES 350 and an Avalon back to back, the same with a NX and a RAV4 Prime, or an RX and Highlander, or a TX and Grand Highlander.
Yeah sure, different interior, different looks, features, but the bottom line is these cars still have fundamental things in common and their road manners fully reflect that.
Drzhivago138@reddit
Similar between rebadges of the same car, sure, but what about a Grand Highlander to RAV4?
Pahlevun@reddit
Of course that would be quite different due to significant physical differences. But in the context of the Urus vs RSQ8 that hardly applies; they are on near-identical wheelbase MLB Evo platforms, with the exact same 4.0T engine with a different ECU program, exact same ZF 8HP with a different TCU.
jdurbzz@reddit
The exterior is pretty different as far as the body goes, but the interior shares A LOT of parts with the RSQ8. Basically the same steering wheel, same stalks, same MMI screens, same instrument cluster, some of the switches are the same, same hood release handle, same pedals (covers are different but pedal is the same afaik), same pop-up speakers, same roof module, etc.
Sexyturtletime@reddit
Higher trim Cayennes also have a 4.0 turbo V8, and from what I can see it is the same engine as the Anus.
Pahlevun@reddit
What engine does your Anus have
IrnBroski@reddit
Rotary wankel
F1_Geek@reddit
RX is based on the Highlander.
solo118@reddit
We are not talking about a Miata and a Fiat here, it is not a rebadge but it is the same platform and they share many parts. They look totally different, so again not what you are calling a rebadge.
Rattle_Can@reddit
is VAG still doing the ferdinand piech move, where you start off designing the highest trim make/model, and then trickle it down to the rest?
LittlePup_C@reddit
Having looked under the hood of both of them, as a Porsche tech, it’s a Cayenne Turbo with a tune. Same hot-V, 4.0L V8. Even the same engine cover.
BoyWhoSoldTheWorld@reddit
Spoken like someone who’s never driven any of them
PurchaseStreet9991@reddit
Tbf how many people do you know who have ready access to most of those vehicles for comparison?
And to his original point, I assume he’s referring to the fact that all the aforementioned vehicles are on the VW MLB Evo platform, along with the Bentley Bentayga
BoyWhoSoldTheWorld@reddit
Having access to a few to compare isn’t hard. You can easily rent / go on driving experiences.
It just shows ignorance that someone thinks cars are on the same platform produce the same final outcome. You only need to try two of them to see obvious differences
PurchaseStreet9991@reddit
Where? I’m genuinely curious where these easy-access Lamborghinis are that are affordable and close to my home
The irony of calling out ignorance after your first sentence lol
Also plenty of people replied saying that more or less the Audi/Porsche/Urus are all very similar, especially considering they can be had with the same engine/transmission
PreheatedLeaf@reddit
I have, they behave similarly. The Sq8, the rsq8, and the urus are EXTREMELY similar. Literally all the mechanical components are the same. The main difference between them is the engine tune and the suspension tuning. Sq8 is more luxury, rsq8 is sporty, urus is a bit more sporty than the rsq8 in suspension but relies more on the suspension tune to boost it above the sq8. Even sitting inside them feels similar.
SvanirePerish@reddit
I own one an have compared them and you're right, they Audi's especially are the same car. If you've driven the Audi's you know where everything in the Urus is too and how it handles. This will change with the newer models though.
AmNoSuperSand52@reddit
Yeah my bad for not having been able to drive a Porsche and a Lamborghini
How silly of me
BoyWhoSoldTheWorld@reddit
Your bad for having an opinion when you don’t even have any real insight.
Just parroting hot takes that allow you to shit on things you’re salty about not having.
Go rent a car and have an experience, something most people can afford.
AmNoSuperSand52@reddit
So to clarify, the basis of your retort is “mad cuz poor”?
What does that have to do with what I said?
BoyWhoSoldTheWorld@reddit
The basis is your ignorance to thinking that the same platform doesn’t produce the same car. It’s obvious you’ve never driven any as you’d see the obvious differences.
AmNoSuperSand52@reddit
I was replying to a comment about the Urus being the mainstream Lamborghini for people that don’t really care about cars
I then pointed out that it’s on a very mainstream SUV platform. You then took the opportunity to be a dick and tell me I can’t talk about these cars unless I go out and rent a Lamborghini
What malfunction in your personal life led you to this interaction?
gt4rs@reddit
no one's saying you're not allowed to talk about it. it's perfectly reasonable to say "I don't like the way the Urus looks" because all you need to do to form an opinion on that is look at a picture of the Urus.
it's another thing to proclaim that the Urus down to the Touareg are the same car without having been in/driven them
handymanshandle@reddit
To be honest, a reductionist take on the platform a car is on isn’t particularly inviting to constructive discussion. It’s the same thing when people say, for example, a GR Corolla is “just a Corolla” when it’s quite different from your run of the mill Corolla hatchback. Sure, the Lamborghini Urus and the Volkswagen Touareg are relatives, but even just by looking at their exteriors and interiors you can tell that they’re quite different and shoot for different use cases.
Wolfkrone@reddit
What the hell kind of German car Inception is this?
AmNoSuperSand52@reddit
Well technically it’s three German cars, one Italian car, and one British car
But all of them are on the VAG MLB Evo
Stunning-Beautiful-7@reddit
I bought 2023 3.0FSI Touareg Edition20, full spec'd for 53k€ with 12k km.
Its nice ride, bit I wouldnt compare Urus to 4x rebadged Touareg. That comparison can be made maybe at top trims like RSQ8 or Cayenne coupe Turbo.
Bderken@reddit
I know that’s what Reddit says, but you talk to any of the owners, and they will give you points on how they’re different.
I’m not saying I personally like it, I am more of a Porsche guy (currently in a Panera 4S w/ sports crono).
But everyone I know who has one, loves the interior. Especially the leather seats. They all spec it with what. It puts it away from the other cars you mentioned
_imyour_dad@reddit
Did your Panera come with a free bread bowl?
cubs223425@reddit
It was supposed to, but they forgot it.
Bderken@reddit
With Mac and cheese in the middle?
roburrito@reddit
Its an Audi Q8. Directly uses Q8 parts.
hi_im_bored13@reddit
RSQ8
roburrito@reddit
Extra fancy q8
durrtyurr@reddit
I'd get a new Touareg any day of the week, everything else on that platform is way too flashy for the small town I live in.
FullMinkJacket@reddit
And a Cadillac Escalade ESV is just a rebadged Chevy Silverado 1500 work truck.
It's incredible what changing the engine, exhaust, suspension, wheels, tires, transmission, body, and interior can do to change one's experience in a vehicle.
solo118@reddit
people just look at the badge
solo118@reddit
yup, this is Lambo's cash cow, why not just bump up production to meet demand
ryanmi@reddit
Why meet demand when you can just release a new model with a new name in 2027 at an astronomically higher cost with a higher profit margin now that the market has confirmed it will pay it.
Bderken@reddit
Lamborghini isn’t used to making that many cars 😂
10000Didgeridoos@reddit
Lol "reliability" has never been a concern of most people buying supercars. Of course they won't be.
ryanmi@reddit
I wouldn't call this a super car. And there's a high probability someone would daily this as it's an SUV. I don't think Urus owners care about high maintenance costs, but they would be deterred if their vehicle was always in for maintenance and undriveable.
Bderken@reddit
That being said, they don’t need to pay for the problems, as they don’t keep them when the warranty is up.
villager_de@reddit
The Urus is the breadwinner. I can live with that if that enables Lamborghini to make actual cool cars. Same with Porsche, the Cayenne and Macan saved the brand
Dan-Flashes@reddit
Its funny how every time there’s a headline like “so and so famous person was speeding/crashed in their Lamborghini” and it turns out to be a urus. Feels so misleading even though it’s true lol
llamacohort@reddit
Why? The example I like to point to is the Car and Driver Lightning Lap. The 2019 Urus is just slightly faster than the 2011 911 GT3RS around a track. It was also faster than the '17 Audi R8 V10, the '23 M2, and the '09 Ariel Atom 3.
The Urus obviously isn't on the bleeding edge of performance. But it's pretty close with a massive amount of additional utility over the cars that are. People who like sports cars seem to think the Urus is like a Tahoe or something, but far closer, performance wise, to a supercar than to a normal large SUV.
Porshuh@reddit
llamacohort@reddit
I believe all of the testing is done on the stock tires that the vehicles are sold with. I would imagine the articles they did on those cars would have any exceptions listed if they changed anything out for testing.
BWFTW@reddit
There point is that advancements on tire technology make up a huge amount of modern lap times. If you out ~2010 era cars or even 2017 cars on modern 2024 rubber and they are all picking up an insane amount of time. Tires alone could be good for ten seconds on a full track.
llamacohort@reddit
A person driving an SUV is probably okay with it performing like a 10 year old supercar. Even if that 10 year old supercar would be a little better with updated tires.
BWFTW@reddit
Tires aren't a little better. On a 2-3 minute Track 10 seconds is a life time. And you could potentially even pick up more. I'm not saying it's bad performing vehicle. I'm saying it's disengenous to compare it to a lap time set 14 years ago on 14 year old tires. You should run some hdpe and you'll realize what I'm talking about, tires are such a massive factor of performance driving that i feel people can't understand till they actually do a track day or auto cross. I'm not saying it's not okay, the vehicle is totally fine. But modern tires make a MASSIVE difference in lap times.
handymanshandle@reddit
I think you're focusing a little too much on the technicalities of their statement more than the point of it, which is that performance SUVs go fast as fuck and handle well enough for their buyer demographic to like it. Realistically, most celebrities aren't taking any car to a track, and even if they did they're gonna be able to toss money at the best track tires they could get. I'm sure a 2011 Porsche 911 GT3RS could dust a Lamborghini Urus even if if both had the same tires, but either way the Urus handles pretty well for a SUV.
llamacohort@reddit
I feel like you misunderstand what the comparison is. There is only a 7 year difference in the cars and all of the tests are done when the car is new. It's not a test run today. It's a test of new cars that is done every year and added to the database of existing test results.
My point is that people driving a performance SUV would be okay with having the additional utility and the performance of a 10 year old supercar when it was new (which includes tire technology at the time). This is a face and why both Porsche and Lamborghini sell so many more SUVs than sports cars.
Dan-Flashes@reddit
I don’t think I can really explain it, it’s one of those “you get it or you don’t” things I think. There is a certain image/vibe I associate with Lamborghini that the Urus does not embody to me. There was a time when driving an exotic car had sacrifices and spoke, to some degree, about someone’s priorities/self-image/etc. Now, aside from wealth, it doesn’t communicate anything. All subjective of course.
llamacohort@reddit
It all goes away at some point. Vehicles lost their soul when they lost the carburetor, there became numb with power steering, they became an appliance when they didn't have a manual transmission. The list goes on and on. Every generation has a group of people who dislike advancing past the first cool thing they learned about. This is no different.
Porsche is now an SUV company that has a little sports car project that is now well funded instead of going under. It was only a matter of time before the other high end car companies realized this and did the same.
Drzhivago138@reddit
Every new Jeep is "not a real Jeep" until the next one comes along.
llamacohort@reddit
Yep. It reminds me a lot of conversations around the names of types of vehicles. People get upset when Mercedes calls a slant back SUV a coupe or some company advertises their 4 door hatchback as a shooting brake. People don't realize that these words have always been evolving since the 2 examples above were wooden boxes on wheels being pulled by horses.
Everything changes. There is lots of old cool stuff, there is lots of new cools stuff. Some might not ever be able to be replicated (lotus elise), some might get overshadowed quickly (my MYP). It's okay. Have fun and drive things you like when you have the opportunity.
Drzhivago138@reddit
And the 2004 CLS wasn’t the first 4-door coupe either. There were models labeled as such in the ‘60s and even the ‘20s.
Dan-Flashes@reddit
Yeah I think that’s true. My brain just isn’t calibrated to the modern car world yet.
handymanshandle@reddit
I knew the Urus was fast in a straight line, but I honestly didn’t know it also had serious handling chops to go with it. I guess I should have assumed as much, but hanging with an older GT3RS and an Audi R8 is pretty good company to be in.
llamacohort@reddit
Another user mentioned that the track had some changes in 2015, but the newer cars are still a good comparison.
But yeah, performance SUVs offer a lot now. You can get something that isn’t the highest performance, but is still acceptable to someone who likes fast car and also have space to put the family in, travel with friends, etc.
TurboFucked@reddit
You can't compare old lap times because the course has changed pretty dramatically over the years. With a significant change happening in 2015. You can get an idea of the speed increases by looking at the amateur lap times. Someone in a 2011 V6 Mustang ran a 3:00 vs the 3:12 that they got for the car back in 2011. And a bloke in an 2007 Z06 ran a 2:50, vs the 2:57 they got originally (though, this one had some mods).
Additionally, 2011 would have been long before manufactures started cheating in the LL, by doing things like offering Trofeo Rs as a "dealer installed option", so the car could run that tire in the LL. Porsche now supplies engineering support for LL runs, to ensure the best possible times.
So it's best to compare cars that ran the same year, or at least within a fewyears. Which puts the Urus right between the C63 S and the M5 Comp, good company for sure.
Also, you need to correct for tires (tires are good for like 10 seconds on some cars). The Urus ran on P Zero Corsa PZC4 tires, which was a state of the art tire for 2019 (and still is). Compared to the GR Supra, which ran the same time, it was running on Pilot Super Sports, a tire that's several generations old.
llamacohort@reddit
While it may not be the best comparison, I think it still stands up to show that the Urus isn't just some lazy full size SUV. Anything about specifics, really doesn't matter too much. It's not like someone would choose one or the other based on the time given for the lightning lap.
Although, it is odd that car and driver don't separate the numbers based on the track changes.
Multifaceted-Simp@reddit
I see so many Lamborghinis in LA.
Urus aside, I see a STO once a week
BlazinAzn38@reddit
Isn’t the Urus essentially just a reskinned Audi?
BWFTW@reddit
All the vw groups bug suvs are a different take on the same platform, basically just all riced out touregs haha. The cayaenne , q8, and urus all use variations of the same Porsche/audi developed v8. The cayenne turbo gt is the same motor but i think is slightly more bespoke then the urus version? I know there is some variations in turbos and internals. I can't remember off the top of my head and honestly i don't try to spend time memorizing the specs on suvs lol
Bderken@reddit
I promise you, if you sit in it, and drive it, it feels different. It also is a bit more luxurious in my opinion.
It’s why u also drive a Lexus ES, it is a Camry, but feels way way better (especially the suspension).
Most owners of the urus would also agree, the leather that is in the urus with the proper spec, is leagues ahead of Audi. Also the driving feel (suspension) is more sportier.

I worked at LAX and would constantly park my shit box in between these. It got tiresome after a while.

Presumably it's one of the few Lambos that they can fit in comfortably.

That’s a good point. And the football players I know are retired and need taller cars to get in and out of. They are big as shit too.

The other day someone commented that the Corolla would sell better if it still had the manual option on the base trims, lol

hey, they never said it would be profitable for Toyota.
I'm they could get an extra 5 sales launching a base manual Corolla

MigratingSwallow@reddit
I mean, it usually is. It would make you think that Reddit is somehow the voice of the broader public but Reddit usually misses the mark. Shit there was a point in the gaming sub back in the Wii-U days when there was a common theme of people saying Nintendo should just stop making consoles and sell out to Sony or Microsoft since the Wii-U was such a massive failure and would lead to the bankruptcy of the company.
The same could be said about politics and cars if you go based simply on frontpage posts.

If you can afford this vehicle you can afford insurance, repairs, and the lifestyle that involves owning a Lambo. There’s plenty of wealthy people in the US so for sure this is a trend that won’t stop. Good for Lambo and good for the customers!
HapTato@reddit
I'm not sure that first sentence is true. It really depends on the buyer's definition of "afford"

strongmanass@reddit
Purists love to hate it but it's done very well for Lamborghini and is reportedly great to drive. But one thing confuses me:
They already announced plans for the Lanzador around 2028, which is basically a coupe jacked up to CUV height. So they're planning on selling a 2 door electric CUV and a 4 door electric CUV as separate models? I don't see the logic in that.
BWFTW@reddit
Curious how lambos electric transition will go. I feel they rely on the character of the engine and the excitement of that more then other brands.
Aero06@reddit
Dollars to donuts the Lanzador gets an extra set of doors by the time it hits production, I assume it will be to the Macan what the Urus is to the Cayenne.
strongmanass@reddit
I'd think a $300K+ compact CUV would be a tough sell. But so would a CUV height coupe, so who knows what it will be.
NathanScott94@reddit
True, there's probably a reason not many know of the Isuzu Vehicross.
The_GeneralsPin@reddit
What on earth is a CUV?
strongmanass@reddit
A crossover. "Crossover Utility Vehice"
The_GeneralsPin@reddit
Lol. Pavement princess works better.
llamacohort@reddit
CUV is made to be on pavement. A pavement princess is something made for off-roading (or to look like it's made for off-roading) but never taking off road.
The_GeneralsPin@reddit
Made to be on pavement. So, like a wagon/estate, but higher, heavier, more expensive, less efficient and handles worse?
NoEngrish@reddit
do you umm... think vehicles should only be one size or something?
The_GeneralsPin@reddit
Made to be on pavement. So, like a wagon/estate, but higher, heavier, more expensive, less efficient and handles worse?
Drzhivago138@reddit
Better a pavement princess crossover than a pavement princess SUV.
TwelveTrains@reddit
I'm sorry but no SUV is "great to drive". It's an overpriced VW Touareg.
strongmanass@reddit
Have you driven it?
TwelveTrains@reddit
A 5,500 pound SUV doesn't deserve to be driven, these vehicles are abominations and should be illegal for the safety of pedestrians and cyclists.
Adding weight and height doesn't make a vehicle better. Straight line speed doesn't make a vehicle fast.
This subreddit is /r/cars not /r/SUVs.
Porshuh@reddit
Not just pedestrians and cyclists but drivers of smaller cars. SUVs and CUVs also seriously compromise sightlines for all road users, undoing decades of traffic engineering. This is why we need to tax cars for every inch of height over 5 feet.
llamacohort@reddit
Inline speed? Have you see it's time on a track? The 2019 Urus is faster around a track than a 2011 911 GT3RS. The Urus is a legitimately fast vehicle on a track, no just a Tahoe with more horsepower.
https://www.caranddriver.com/features/a23319884/lightning-lap-times-historical-data/
strongmanass@reddit
So you haven't driven it but you're confident in saying it isn't great to drive based on the weight you overestimated by 700 pounds (the curb weight is actually 4800 pounds).
Drzhivago138@reddit
/r/carscirclejerk
Recoil42@reddit
Are we sure the production Lanzador isn't going to be four-door? I get the concept is a 2+2, but maybe that's just for the concept? Generally speaking two models in rapid succession seems dicey, SSP K1 will have barely hit by then.
strongmanass@reddit
IIRC they said the concept was "mostly complete", although who knows what that means. Another CUV would be disappointing. With two CUVs and two sports cars Lamborghini would be moving closer to Porsche at that point. Granted a crossover would be more profitable than a weird crossover height coupe.

I saw a Uris in traffic yesterday. The only reason I recognized it was because I am like Rainman with cars and it had a huge Lamborghini nameplate on the back. It looks like another rig for parents to take the kids to soccer in, but with a sports car costume instead of world explorer costume. Whatever floats your boat I guess. A Model X Plaid would hand the URIs its ass in a non-track situation without melting its own parts for a fraction of the price.

It's waaaay more complicated than that. Dieselgate was catastrophic for them. They've lit $5 billion on fire with the Cariad fiasco. Chinese market demand is down for a few reasons. A corporate conglomerate's problems can't be solved by a 20% or whatever profit margin on a few SUVs.
Itchy_Document_5843@reddit

solo118@reddit
You have to imagine getting an entry price Lambo will do amazing things, but sold out for a year plus is kinda wild as they are not really limiting production nor is it very special being based off an Audi.
yeahno21@reddit
The Urus being based on an Audi isn't a bad thing imo, the rsq8 is an excellent vehicle. Now the price comes down to if you're willing to pay 100k more on the design and the better handling and without forgetting of course the Lamborghini "badge".
solo118@reddit
Never said it was bad, it is GREAT for Lambo as they can capitalize on using another platform and just putting their design on it. That is how you make money easily.
Audi (imho) are more low key design-wise, they always have been. It is not for the "bro" looking to post on instagram, a bright green Lambo does that job and worth the extra money to them.
As a previous Audi owner, I downright appreciate the low-key aspect to their designs, very under the radar, I do not even care that a few people thought I was in an A4 when it was really an A8 lol
PigSlam@reddit
I'll look into buying that locomotive instead, which I can also afford.
tocruise@reddit
Damn, I was just about to buy one as well. I guess I’ll have to wait…
Raintrooper7@reddit
Oh you mean RSQ8 skin unavailable
UndeadWaffle12@reddit
Makes sense, it’s an incredible vehicle with the only real flaw being that it’s a bit too expensive. It’s an RSQ8 with a tune, lambo looks, and suv comfort while still being loud and flashy enough to be a status symbol for the kind of people who buy entry level Lamborghinis
Littlefinger6226@reddit
Well, data would suggest they aren’t expensive at all since they’re sold out through 2026… the pandemic really taught luxury carmakers people would pay through their nose with dealer up charges, so now they’re upcharging you right from the factory!
SkylineRSR@reddit
I’m over her contemplating if it’s worth getting a PS5 Pro tomorrow and these people are preordering Lamborghini SUVs, god damn.
DreamzOfRally@reddit

DodgerBlueRobert1@reddit
Well, you can save $100k and get an RSQ8, which is nearly the same vehicle and looks better.
julienjj@reddit
It also has the worst shifter design of any car I have ever driven.
The gear lever set it into reverse, P is a button and D is paddle +. LMAO.
billmr606@reddit
I see lots of these, I could go down the street to my local dealer and buy one today ( well assuming Santander would approve me :)
I was sitting at a traffic light the other day admiring the massive front brake rotor. I assume a brake job would cost 5k on one of these.
Peter_Panarchy@reddit

MagixTouch@reddit
If only there was an Audi that is very similar.
Sparo4492@reddit
I'm surprised this one is so popular, but every time I go to fix their plumbings I get above rates. No complaints from me :D
moonRekt@reddit
Gross. But I think it’s time we just accept that these brands are ever increasingly becoming more about prestige than for enthusiasts. As people get more and more used to EVs, they will quickly forget all the fine intricacies that made the old roaring engines and hard gearshifts the main appeal of paying $300k for a car
strongmanass@reddit
Pure enthusiast brands have trouble staying in business. That's how Lamborghini unded up under VAG in the first place. Same with Bugatti. Porsche had to make the Cayenne to stay afloat (after the Boxster). Brands need a SUV these days to be competitive. Even Bentley and Rolls Royce relened after turning their nose up at the category for decades. And now McLaren is begging people to help them make one.
There are other reasons to spend that much on a car. EV hypercars are having a tough time, but decrease the price by an order of magnitude and by the end of the decade I think there will be interesting and worthwhile electric supercars.
