I enjoyed the change from staff to sais. After they both DIED ffs 😅 Gab lost her black and white thinking and the sais reflect more of a choice in fighting. While the staff was defensive, the said provided a choice. She could choose the sharp end for protection if necessary. Otherwise the sais were defensive and blunt force, not deadly. While I missed the peace-loving Gab, I appreciated her maturation and acceptance of the fact that the world she and Xena lived in sometimes required a...not-peaceful solution.

As someone who has had a very hard life? I think it's the honesty of the Sais for me. Yes it sucks to hurt people. If they are making you choose between you and them? Then you're choosing harm to yourself if you don't fight back. So this is the honesty that she should be an equal in defense and offense to Xena not a side kick. It's the transition where as an adult I see them as married

Yes, Gab's existential crisis over non-violence and then her soul mate and her both dying as a result of (or at least partially because of) her nonviolence...made her reconsider some stuff 😳

In my head canon, I'll always identify her with a staff. However, I liked watching Gabs use them and Renee's obvious enjoyment strutting her stuff with her new weapon.

Yes, that, too, which I think was a natural development for the character as Xena's partner. Still, I like to think of her as a warrior bard with quill and staff. More mature and multi-faceted but maintaining her curiosity, open heart and optimism.

I hated how quickly they changed her “way of peace” in season 4 back to “Way of the warrior” in early season 5 like girl..choose a damn side you’ve been doing this for 5 years…

That’s how they were designed. To my general understanding, sais aren’t meant to be cutting / stabbing weapons, but more defensive weapons or blunt force.
Of course, on the show, they would magically be razor sharp whenever the script required them to be.

Fair enough. The staff allowed her to be a better fighter and defender, and tbh i kinda liked it, too. But I feel that when she got to the point where her skills as a fighter reached a new level, a new weapon was needed. And I feel the sais was a good upgrade.

I think Lucy said it best, “I thought they were kinda dumb… kinda stupid..” I do prefer the staff, but I guess they felt compelled to make a change.
