Can Sallie Mae Garnish Disability Checks?

Hi I finally had the courage to seek help and speak the truth about my disability & my doctor said it’s severe enough that I could possibly obtain social security checks. I was wondering can Sallie Mae garnish EDD SDI or SSDI checks to pay for the student loan? I’m scared bc I’m not working anymore.

If you can’t work due to your disability you might be able to look into getting your loans discharged because of it

For federal or private loans? Or both?

Both but Sallie Mae will fight you tooth and nail even with a disability discharge is what my lawyer told me

Sallie Mae needs to go...period

I’m dealing with them as well… I agree. They are vile

Both. But for Sallie Mae specifically they make it super hard. You have to contact them directly and ask for an application and then have your dr send in a letter.

I don’t think I’ve ever heard a good thing about Sallie Mae 😬

For federal, file the Total and Permanent Disability discharge papers online with Federal Student Aid
For private, contact your lender.

Ooo tysm very good to know.

They can't touch federal benefits so no

I've read they will absolutely garnish your SS.

Not for private student loans though because SS is under federal benefits
If a federal student loan is defaulted then only SSI is protected
Do some research before replying next time
