I have the opportunity to buy what I’m told to be a 1955 Philip Rhodes 48’ cutter aft cabin. If anyone knows any info on the boat it would be much appreciated!! I’m gonna go talk to the owner today and check out the interior in about 2 hours. (I went yesterday and took these photos with my power boat.)

Are you familiar with the care and feeding of a wooden boat?

And wooden spars?
She's bleeding rust from the sides of the superstructure. Not what you want to see.
Nice lines on her though, she's a great classic looking boat if you overlook the condition.
You could spend barrels full of money on a refit and maintenance, or just live on it while it deteriorates to a wreck.

Damn near took a free Chris Craft Constellation, with the idea that I'd glass the hull and let it harbor-rot for the next 15 years.

One thing we know about it is that it is a 70 year old wooden boat.
So yeah.

It's wood. Run.
Could be wrong, but I'll venture if you had the skills and background needed to take care of a wooden boat, you wouldn't be asking Reddit.

Well, he seems to have bought this particular boat 2 years ago for less than one months' marina fees (at my marina anyway), and not put so much as a coat of paint on it. I'd recommend caution. 1955 Rhodes 48' Sailboat Boat Single Inboard | eBay

That auction closed two days ago, not two years ago.

Year: 1955
Hull Material: Fiberglass
There's very little info, and what is there I don't trust. Production fiberglass sailboats didn't become a thing until a couple years later. There were a couple one offs before 1955, but the first production fiberglass sailboat manufacture was probably Yacht Constructors out of Portland, OR in 1956.
A wooden boat that was sheathed in fiberglass is not something you want to touch generally.

D'oh - sorry, I should've read closer. Somebody flipping it before the ink is dry on the paperwork from online auction? Philip Rhodes was one of the great pioneers of fiberglass and he did start that work in the 50s: Philip Rhodes - Classic Yacht Info
Either way though, that house looks like be of wooden construction and is could easily be a mushroom farm in places by this time.

It would need it's owner
to also own their own boatyard
