I have allways loved Whales and my recent cuddly whale acquisitions have reignited my fascination with these beautiful animals and I feel the need for Whale books so any recommendations should be appreciated!

Can't recommend this enough.

Started the original version recently, as a not native English speaker that is not an easy book to read. Totally understand why it is a classic though.

The Cultural Lives of Whales and Dolphins by Whitehead and Rendell, and Of Orcas and Men by David Neiwert

There’s this book called Isabel of the Whales by Hester Velman. It’s a middle grade fiction book but it’s fantastic
Rubyloxred@reddit
Greyson by Lynn Cox. It's a true story: She was a long distance swimmer who ended up being followed by a baby whale. I won't spoil it but it was a good easy read.
Lodray2477@reddit
Loved this book!

I love the guy on the bottom 😭
Henbit_@reddit
Whalefall by Daniel Kraus is a fictional story of a boy who gets swallowed by a whale, and his time inside. There's plenty of facts about whales, in particular sperm whales, the deep sea, and scuba diving :)

OH MY GOD IVE FINALLY FOUND SOMEONE LIKE ME!! I adore all the jellycat whales, your collection is fantastic!! I'm jealous you have sullivan 😭😭 I don't have any great book recommendations at the moment, but I hope you find some soon! just saw these plushies and had to share mine :D which ones your favourite? I love humphrey, he's so cute
octopuss-96@reddit (OP)
Aw look at your Whale family there really is something about the jellycat Whales. I'm equally jealous! you have all those Wilburs, especially the big one. I nearly got him so many times but couldn't justify him at the time then he retired. I can't quite chose between Gilbert and sulivan but I love them all so much they are so comforting.
Kirikati@reddit
Oh the wulilburs are really cute - my mum got them for me when I was younger 🥰 I love them! I always keep the littlest one in my bag. I cuddle my Gilbert every night, you're right about him being comforting!! One day I'll get a sullivan too >:)
teatime_yes_pls@reddit

Thankyou everyone looks like I have lots of good reading to do!
micakers@reddit
so.. @octopuss-96 ... where did you get those plushes.. bc.. need !! please and thank you
octopuss-96@reddit (OP)
They are Jellycat, so admittedly, they are on the pricey side, but they are so soft and are worth it and are more ethically and sustainably made than some other soft toys
dlerps@reddit
They're amazing quality though. My 3 year old adores whales and he got the humpback a while back and became his favorite companion, which also means some more rough play sessions. Still looks great.
Christmas the blue whale will join in as well. 🙂
octopuss-96@reddit (OP)
Aw, I'm sure your 3 year old will be delighted. The blue whale is really special they are really good quality.
ZestyMangoTime@reddit
Moby Dick is the only one that I know of. Maybe look into the ship the Essex though.

The Dolphin in the Mirror:Exploring Dolphin Minds and Saving Dolphin Lives- Diana Reiss. I read a long time ago but I still remember the foreword being about a whale. Good read!

Cultural Lives of Whales & Dolphins. Scholarly but readable

She’s Come Undone by Wally Lamb. Not about a whale, per se, but a whale plays a key part.

I need those plushies omg they're so cute 😭

I just started reading “How to speak whale” by Tom Mustill. The author was kayaking and a humpback whale breached onto them. Amazing story! Can’t wait to finish it
Zargwool54@reddit
I’m sure it might already be in here but I’m not going to look through all this.
“Whalefall” it’s a pretty cool thriller, scifi, suspense about a diver stuck in a sperm whales mouth 😂

I fantastic book I read was called Grayson, (unfortunately I can’t remember the author’s name) but it’s the true account of a young competitive swimmer who ends up helping a lost baby whale reunite with its mother. One of my favorite books and I highly recommend reading it!

Song for a Whale is a great young adult novel.

Came here to post this. My mom read it to me all the time as a kid
micakers@reddit
also the lost whale: the true story of an orca called Luna
Ihateeveryone4real@reddit
Song for a whale
ellecellent@reddit
Death at Sea World talks about orcas in captivity but also gives a lot of fascinating details about orca biology. I read it in a weekend I was glued to it!
BeachedBottlenose@reddit
Susan Casey’s books are really good. She has one specifically about Dolphins called “Voices in the Ocean.”
“The Devil’s Teeth” is another she wrote and is about sharks and other wildfire at the Farralon Islands off San Francisco. She talks about whales a good bit there. Fascinating read.
“How to Speak Whale” is good but kind of wanders. Still a good look into the science of interpreting whale songs.
I’m going to Cali next month to meet a cousin I’ve never met and also to go whale watching. I’ve never seen a whale. 🐋
I’d love to see some other book recommendations here.
octopuss-96@reddit (OP)
