HELP! M.2 NVME drive not showing up in disk management.
Posted by Daanjansen@reddit | buildapc | View on Reddit | 141 comments
Hi, everyone
I need some help figuring out why my new m.2 ssd is not showing up in disk management First of all heres my parts list: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/qBjHXb
So I bought a second m.2 nvme drive (Intel 660p 1TB). After having installed it in the M2M slot of my motherboard the drive shows up in the bios, device manager, in the properties of my C:/ drive and even CPUID Hardware monitor detects the drive as seen in the screenshots provided. Despite this I cannot manage to get the drive to show up in disk management so I can assign a drive letter to it and have it show in the file explorer.
Ive been at it all day trying out fixes of people with similar problems but no luck yet. This is what ive tried so far:
- Reseating the drive
- Installing the correct drivers directly from intel.
- Deleting the Standard AHCI 1.0 Serial ATA-controller drivers
- Deleting, reinstalling and updating all disk related drivers.
- Run the hardware and devices troubleshooter
- Ive tried 3rd party software, ("Minitool Partition Wizard" which couldn't detect the drive and "EaseUS partition master" which did detect the drive but could only scan it for files.)
- Diskpart
- Disabling SATA port 4/5 in bios
- Enabling and disabling RAID
- Disabling CSM and fast boot settings in BIOS
I am probably still missing a few fixes that ive already tried. I have basicly tried everything I was able to find and cannot find any new posts with proposals of fixes I havent already done.
The only thing I can think of that I havent done is switch the Intel drive with the Crucial one to see if the M2A slot does work. But because of the hassle removing the CPU cooler to access the slot I would rather do that as a last resort.
In the imgur link below theres some pictures of the diskmanager, devicemanager etc. (Sorry for the OS language not being English I hope it isnt too much of a problem) https://imgur.com/a/Z4mcFEp
If theres any additional info needed I would be happy to provide it. I hope we can find a fix and possibly help others experiencing the same problem.
Edit: Fixed a formatting error and added attempted fixes.
Edit2: So after a chat with Intel support I did a low level format using KillDisk which fixed the issue.

I'm extremely late to the party but my drive was recognized in BIOS and in Device Manager but was not showing up in Disk Management, thus, it wasn't functional. In Control Panel, follow the path Control Panel\System and Security\Storage Spaces\Create a storage pool and it showed my unformatted drives. I selected Simple formatting and typed my max GBs in (my drive showed 930 GB available so I put 930 GB) and the drive then showed up in Disk Management. I hope this helps someone. Good luck

You saved me.
For any on win11 the setting slightly moved. It's in System > Storage > Disks and Volumes.
Should be an option to create a volume, you can just choose basic drive and let all the settings be default unless you know what you're doing.
PureDangle@reddit
Glad it helped! Thanks for the win11 update!

Posting because this thread helped me solve a similar issue. When I went to disk management, I originally could not see my new SSD (it showed up in Bios and Device Manager) until I switched the view from “Volume List” to “Graphical View”. Under volume the drive would not show up because it did not have any data on it, but under Graphical View it showed up and I could initialize it
DJHeadshotHunter@reddit
For anyone who may be reading this thread years later (like me) I want to try and help you if nothing else has worked. One thing you might also want to try is your PSU. I spent probably 10 hours trying every suggestion on Reddit but my fix was simple...... the power supply unit (PSU). I thought it was my motherboard socket at the end of the day but it wasn't. My PSU was failing.... and not giving sufficient power to that NVME drive slot for some reason but yet my other NVME slots worked totally fine. So If all else fails on this list try upgrading or getting a new PSU. I went from a failing 750 watt PSU to a new 1000 watt PSU. And just like that my NVME drive started working flawlessly again. So I hope this might help anyone who might still be trying to figure it out. Give it a shot, and good luck on your troubleshooting!!

How to Fix the Issue: NVMe M.2 Drive Shows in BIOS but Not in Windows Disk Management
If your BIOS detects the NVMe M.2 SSD but Windows Disk Management does not, here are the most common causes and solutions.
🔧 1. Check if the drive appears in Device Manager Sometimes Windows sees the drive, but Disk Management does not.
If it appears here but not in Disk Management, the drive may: - Not be initialized - Have an unsupported or corrupted partition table (e.g., Linux partitions)
2. Check the drive using DiskPart 1. Open Command Prompt as Administrator 2. Type:
diskpart list diskYou can clean it ( this erases all data):
select disk X clean exitAfter this, Disk Management should prompt you to initialize the drive (GPT recommended).
Verify in BIOS:
🔌 5. Check compatibility Some motherboards support only:
If your slot supports only SATA, an NVMe drive may show in BIOS but not in Windows.
6. Update drivers Updating these can help:
If you want, I can also prepare a shorter “quick guide” version or help you translate more technical content.
Exciting_Artichoke_4@reddit
If it helps anyone, I have an NVMe M2 drive that initially didn't appear in Disk Manager. Some pending Windows 11 updates were installed, and after restarting, it magically appeared.
Emelius@reddit
I had a very similar issue on Windows 11. I fixed it in the most peculiar way. When I went to Disk Management it wasn't showing up, but in the search results when I searched for "disk...", I saw an option pop up called "Manage Disk & Volumes". I'm guessing this is the new Windows 11 version of the older Disk management tool.
I saw that my drive was being recognized there, so I clicked to format it, then it threw up an error saying essentially "You can't format a read-only drive", but the funny thing is once that popped up, i saw that the drive was now appearing in the older control panel Disk Management tool. From there, I was able to properly format it.
Dunno if people are getting some weird ass Windows 11 funkiness with this issue, but in my case it was.
Grouchy-Kick6070@reddit
You saved my day, it works for me, that's crazy
GG_Z@reddit
Sorry for the notification but searching manage disk and volumes is what worked for me. Its the only place I could see the drive to format it
vapocalypse52@reddit
I had to reseat a drive because I didn't push it enough in the slot. Some slots are very tight and need a bit more strength to fully get in.
Does it appear in the BIOS?
Daanjansen@reddit (OP)
Yes it does appear in the BIOS I have also tried reseating it aswell.
FlyBoy_0112@reddit

Dry-Power6990@reddit
Holy crap. This has been bugging me for days. This worked. You're a life saver.
Important_Swing_9816@reddit
I bought an external M.2 SSD to USB adapter box from some Chinese website for $8, plugged in the dead drives that never showed up in disk management or in BIOS, and then they appeared, all usable.
Shot_Bass@reddit
So the solution at the top works but for me, it isn’t traditional for a simple m.2
When I went into disk management I couldn’t see the unallocated m.2 device because i needed to scroll down. For some reason the scroll wheel doesn’t work so just try and check for a scroll wheel bar and click it down. Maybe you will see your unallocated device and you can go from there.
Try that out let me know
Hairy_Day_357@reddit
Full STOP:: This is an easy fix-
Right Click Start/Windows>Disk Management> Scroll to the drive and it likely says "Unassigned"> just assign a volume to it and click format, assign drive letter and youre good.
Extension_Button2585@reddit
but my pc does not show up
Responsible_Meet1919@reddit
you are an actual lifesaver, every other fix i tried skipped the step about adding a volume
Upset_Succotash_1445@reddit
Thanks for that, super easy for a newbie :)
GhostBandit86@reddit
So a year on from the deleted comment that saved many people… drag the window down on disk management and it’s probably sat there at the bottom. Mouse scroll doesn’t work. I’m a moron too
SnarKsByte@reddit
Wow. This was it. Good on you. Had to Drag the window bigger and there it is.
Suphinx@reddit
Dude your comment should be the top comment. I initially created the storage pool which worked, but knew there had to be an actual issue for why it wasn’t showing and this was 100% it. You have to manually drag the window to see more and allocate the volume which makes it show in the disk management now. Thank you for this!!!
Financial-File-5387@reddit
For those still wondering. I went through all of this and it was really the simplest solution I could have ever found lol. Make sure on the bottom portion of the disk manager that you scroll down XD. Worked for me.
Drewski_sG@reddit
Holly shit literally just had to drag the window down.
ImmediateSun9583@reddit
Ty because original comment was deleted
LawdTunderin@reddit
this comment saved me - but super weird - it took sometime for it to show as "unallocated space" - probably 10-15 mins after I seated it, did it finally show up - was making me go crazy
Sufficient_Size2941@reddit
Hey the original comment got deleted, what was the solution everyone is talkinh about?
Dusty_Jangles@reddit
Did you find out? I’m sitting here wondering as well with the same issue!
Sufficient_Size2941@reddit
Never found out what the comment said but my issue was I never did this step lmao https://youtu.be/ZxV6IcNvbek?si=nV62dz7lOU7kDLF0
What part are you stuck on, do you see the drive in BIOS?
Dusty_Jangles@reddit
I actually just got it lol. Went into the old disk management program and it was there, just assigned it a volume as another comment said, formatted it and it was good to go! Thanks for replying though, appreciate it! And hopefully these help someone else!

4browntown@reddit
Well, I thank you for starting this club. Mine was hiding at the top.
Endeyslayer@reddit
smh just had to do the same
fallouthirteen@reddit
And don't be fooled by its bad UI. Like I just had this problem now, read your comment, checked and thought it wasn't it. I thought I did scroll down (I used the mouse wheel in that box). Ended up going all the way to diskpart and using list disk to see that it knew I had the disk. Then went back to disk management and saw "wait, that grey part on the side isn't at the "bottom" bottom). Dragged on that side part and there it was.
WHY HAVE 1 PANEL OF THE WINDOW NOT REACT TO SCROLL WHEEL? Top part reacts to scroll wheel when the cursor is in that panel, just not the bottom part.

I tried installing KillDisk but it doesn't detect my new SSD. It just shows my C: drive. The new SSD is recognized in BIOS but nowhere in windows, device manager, disk manager, etc. does it show up. What do I do? I've spent over an hour looking up every guide I could find and nothing is working.
eliasrmf@reddit
Which type? Nvme? My old system had one slot for Sata and another for Nvme. Need to check whether this could be the case. I've been able to consistently see my SSD on bios and dvc mgmt, the only missing was on Windows. So I've reached this thread about KillDisk and it found my device while other tools couldn't. You need to check which type of M2 your Mobo support, which type you bought and put the pieces together.
roman1177@reddit
Turns out the reason it wasn't showing is because my motherboard won't let me use a second SSD because my CPU is 10th gen and not 11th gen. So I gotta buy a new CPU, yay.
aNINETIEZkid@reddit
instead of upgrading from 10th to 11th gen cpu to use the second m2 port maybe you could add a PCIe ssd adapter and run it from there.
eliasrmf@reddit
CPU should not be the reason for an HDD or SSD not being recognized. This sounds odd. Unless, as I've asked before you're trying to get 2 Nvme SSD in the same Mobo, that may require a latest version Mobo.
roman1177@reddit
My mobo is a B560 DS3H AC-Y1. Prebuilt PC, came with a 10th gen CPU. The second SSD port is unusable unless I upgrade it to an 11th gen.
aNINETIEZkid@reddit
damn this must be what is screwing with me and my b560 pro4 when trying a 2nd ssd in the top port.. thanks :/ I'll try the 3rd port and maybe that will work
HAL-Over-9001@reddit
Old thread, but I'm having the same issue. My 5800x is dual M.2 compatible, and both NVME slots on my mobo are M.2 compatible. I'm gonna try using Killdisk like they mentioned in this thread and report back.
Popular_Many4815@reddit
I had come up with a different solution. Control Panel>System and Security>Storage Spaces. If you can see your SSD in Storage Spaces but not in Disk Management, delete it. Then click "Create a new pool and storage space" and use the settings required for your SSD (you may have to use no resiliency).
This is just what worked for me. c:
Unforgiven17@reddit
By chance did you figure out a solution for this? I see this was 8 months ago but I just bought a new gigabyte motherboard and am having a very similar issue.
Daanjansen@reddit (OP)
Sorry for the late response. If you are still looking for a fix, this is what I did: I ended up chatting with Intel support, they suggested I do a low level format of the drive using a program named KillDisk. After the format it showed up fine in diskmanagement.
Hope it helps
mr_rasfar@reddit
Had new kingston ssd that showed in device manager, but not in disk management. After formating with KillDisk issue was solved. Thanks!
Descrete@reddit
FOR ANYONE THAT HAS THIS ISSUE. Use KillDisk to delete the contents of the drive that's not showing up in Disk Management. After everything is deleted you should be able to format it normally. Just worked for me <3
cpinkfloy4@reddit
FOR ANYONE *STILL* HAVING ISSUES im an idiot, and found that if i go into Computer Management -> disk Management then click on the drive from here. Format the drive (if it is a new drive) then assign it a drive letter, it will now show up in your Folder explorer.
No-Marzipan-5256@reddit
You cant select the drive in disk management if the drive isn't showing up in disk management.....
